In those years of struggle, of learning to be strong for my children, of facing the uncertainty of migration, of Ignacio's orphan illness, and each challenge of caregiving and my reinvention of life, there were days when I wondered if I did the right thing. Days when I felt guilty for having left those I love, for not having been able to take them with me. But there was my father, with his words that arrived late but with a certainty that transcended time and distance. I remembered the day I left, I left my house at 4 am, we closed the house, and I did not dare to look back, with Ignacio asleep on my chest, Isabella clinging to my hand and Ian taking his first uncertain steps. En esos años de lucha, de aprender a ser fuerte para mis hijos, de enfrentar la incertidumbre de la migración, de la enfermedad huérfana de Ignacio, y cada desafío del cuidado y de mi reinvento de vida, hubo días en los que me pregunté si hice lo correcto. Días en los que me sentí culpable por haber dejado a quienes amo, por no haber podido llevarlos conmigo. Pero ahí estaba mi padre, con sus palabras llegadas tarde pero con una certeza que traspasó el tiempo y la distancia. Recordé el día en que partí, salí a las 4 am de mi casa, cerramos la casa, y no me atreví a ver atrás, con Ignacio dormido sobre mi pecho, Isabella aferrada a mi mano e Ian dando sus primeros pasos inciertos. Recordé la despedida apresurada, el último abrazo, el último "te quiero" dicho entre lágrimas y la promesa de un reencuentro que aún no ha llegado.
Tomé la carta y la acerqué a mi pecho, cerrando los ojos, y dejando que todo el dolor de la añoranza de un abrazo de mis padres saliera entre lágrimas y sollozos. Mi padre siempre tuvo razón: sin importar dónde esté, sigo siendo yo. Sigo siendo esa mujer que lucha cada día, que aprende, que cae y se levanta. Que, aunque la vida le haya puesto pruebas que nunca imaginó, sigue adelante. Guardé la carta en una de mis gavetas dentro de mi cajita azul de fotos viejas, junto a los recuerdos que me dan fuerza. Y esa noche, antes de dormir, tomé mi teléfono y llamé a mi madre. Porque algunas palabras no pueden esperar otros cinco años para ser dichas y escuchadas.
