Por el parabrisas ahogado por la lluvia él veía borrones de los focos de automóviles viajando a velocidades imposibles; yendo y viniendo, luces blancas, rojas y naranjas, yendo y viniendo al ritmo frenético del limpia parabrisas. Rugía, silbaba y roncaba la carretera como un millar de entes infrahumanos. Un espectáculo agobiante y tortuoso apenas ahogado por el aislamiento del vehículo, una orquesta estridente cuyo sonido penetraba como agujas en los tímpanos, y oculto tras toda esa vorágine de almas en pena, él pudo ver a "Aquello" aproximándose, cada vez más cerca y más hambriento.
Él aceleró lo más que pudo para alejarse del ruido, que fue atenuándose paulatinamente, y estar más lejos de "Aquello". Dudaba de si saldría vivo de la persecución, menos aun con aquel diluvio; el auto era tanto su refugio como su ataúd. No solo la lluvia caía a raudales sino que de forma extraña, con rabia o resentimiento. Todo a su periferia parecía haber sido engullido por un lobo rabioso: oscuro, violento, asfixiante, húmedo y claustrofóbico.

Through the rain-choked windscreen he saw blurs of car headlights travelling at impossible speeds; coming and going, white, red and orange lights, coming and going to the frantic rhythm of the windscreen wipers. The road roared, hissed and snored like a thousand subhuman entities. An oppressive and tortuous spectacle barely drowned out by the isolation of the vehicle, a strident orchestra whose sound penetrated like needles in the eardrums, and hidden behind all this maelstrom of souls in pain, he could see "It" approaching, closer and closer and hungrier.
He accelerated as fast as he could to get away from the gradually fading noise and further away from "It". He doubted whether he would make it out of the chase alive, let alone in the downpour; the car was as much his refuge as his coffin. Not only was the rain pouring down in torrents, but strangely, with anger or resentment. Everything on its periphery seemed to have been engulfed by a rabid wolf: dark, violent, suffocating, damp and claustrophobic.
Por el retrovisor, más allá de los focos de los autos, vio "Aquello" aproximarse. Acercó el rostro al parabrisas para identificar mejor las señales, pero no eran más que borrones que desaparecían a la velocidad de la luz. El terror le apretaba la garganta hasta que decidió detenerse definitivamente y observar mejor. Una docena de autos pasaron pitando coléricos mientras él intentaba identificar las señales. Por un breve segundo vio el retrovisor y "Aquello" se acercaba. Pudo identificar la palabra "Salida" en una señal a su derecha, así que continuó la marcha como alma que lleva el diablo, siendo acribillado por cientos de pitidos y rugidos bestiales de los otros autos.
El camino que tomó lo condujo hasta lo que parecían las afueras, tras de si dejó la infraestructura citadina para adentrarse en una llanura de hierba alta interminable, como un mar a media noche. La lluvia parecía ser menos copiosa por esos lares, llegando a ser solo una llovizna; seguía siendo oscuro, pero más tranquilo. Aparte de los focos del vehículo, desperdigados a lo largo del horizonte se podían ver los mechurrios que pertenecían a lejanos complejos petroleros, encendidos como soles agonizantes. Él volvió a revisar por el retrovisor y "Aquello" ya no estaba a la vista, quizá lo había dejado de seguir. Pudo al fin relajarse por un momento y simplemente disfrutar del paseo a ningún lugar.
In the rear-view mirror, beyond the headlights of the cars, he saw "It" approaching. He put his face close to the windscreen to better identify the signs, but they were just blurs disappearing at the speed of light. Terror tightened in his throat until he decided to stop for good and take a better look. A dozen cars whizzed past as he tried to identify the signs. For a brief second he glanced in the rear-view mirror and "It" was approaching. He could identify the word "Exit" on a sign to his right, so he drove on like hell, being riddled by hundreds of beeps and beastly roars from the other cars.
The road he took led him to what seemed like the outskirts, leaving the city infrastructure behind him and entering an endless plain of tall grass, like a sea in the middle of the night. The rain seemed to be less copious in these parts, becoming just a drizzle; it was still dark, but quieter. Apart from the vehicle's headlights, scattered along the horizon were the gas flares that belonged to distant oil complexes, lit up like dying suns. He checked the rear-view mirror again and "It" was no longer in sight, perhaps it had stopped following him. He could finally relax for a moment and just enjoy the ride to nowhere.
Mientras procedía a encender la radio, un estruendo seguido de la violenta agitación del vehículo lo alarmaron. Se puso a revisar el panel por si era la gasolina, el aceite o la temperatura, pero todo parecía perfecto. El vehículo fue perdiendo la velocidad hasta detenerse en una cuneta. Dentro del vehículo completamente apagado él se debatió entre quedarse seguro dentro del auto o salir a inspeccionar lo que pasaba. Eligiese lo que eligiese "Aquello" llegaría a él si no avanzaba, así que salió.
La oscuridad era asfixiante, ni siquiera los mechurrios hacían la suficiente luz para ser de ayuda. Abrió el maletero del vehículo y tanteando fue sacando cosa tras cosa que no reconocía hasta dejar el maletero vació. Revisó en los asientos traseros por si encontraba una linterna, un teléfono, lo que sea que diera algo de luz. Entonces los matorrales empezaron a moverse...
Desesperado, buscó y rebuscó en los asientos traseros, en los delanteros, otra vez en el maletero, pero nada. La hierva larga sonaba cada vez más. Él cerró todas las puertas del vehículo e intentó volver a encenderlo una y otra vez, pero la maldita maquina simplemente no quería funcionar. A lo lejos se oyó un golpe a una rama y un ave alzando el vuelo, los matorrales se movían con aun más violencia. Un fuerte golpe seco sonó sobre el techo del vehículo, él alzo la vista y...
As he proceeded to turn on the radio, a rumbling sound followed by the violent shaking of the vehicle alarmed him. He checked the dashboard to see if it was the fuel, oil or temperature, but everything seemed fine. The vehicle slowed to a stop in a ditch. Inside the completely shut down vehicle he debated between staying safely inside the car or getting out to inspect what was going on. Whatever he chose, "It" would get to him if he didn't move forward, so he got out.
The darkness was suffocating, not even the gas flares made enough light to be of any help. He opened the boot of the vehicle and fumbled around, pulling out thing after thing he didn't recognise until the boot was empty. He checked the back seats for a torch, a phone, anything that would give some light. Then the bushes started to move....
Desperate, he searched and searched in the back seats, in the front seats, again in the boot, but nothing. The long grass sounded louder and louder. He locked all the doors of the car and tried to start it again and again, but the damn machine just wouldn't work. In the distance there was a thump of a branch and a bird taking flight, the bushes moved even more violently. A loud thud sounded on the roof of the vehicle, he looked up and....
En aquella noche aciaga, una pareja que iba de paso por la carretera desierta avistó un auto aparentemente accidentado a un lado de la carretera, alumbrado apenas por los mechurrios. Aparte de tener un montón de cosas desperdigadas a su alrededor y una extraña abolladura en el techo, estaba perfectamente. Pero no había el más mínimo rastro de su dueño, como si el viento se lo hubiese llevado.
On that fateful night, a couple passing along the deserted road spotted an apparently wrecked car on the side of the road, barely illuminated by the gas flares. Apart from having a lot of things scattered around it and a strange dent in the roof, it was perfectly fine. But there was not the slightest trace of its owner, as if the wind had blown it away.
