Le dieron una brocha, una cubeta de pintura naranja, una escalera y le ordenaron pintar el muro.
Aquel muro, de color celeste, no era muy alto, pero se extendía tanto que llegaba a perderse de vista en el horizonte, dando la impresión de dar la vuelta al mundo; y quizá lo hacía, quizá él estaba empezando en el centro del muro y debía pintar en dirección a dónde nace el sol para volver por dónde muere. Y así fue como comenzó a pintar.
Empezaba por la mañana, cuando el primer rayo de sol le acariciaba los párpados, y terminaba cuando la pintura se acababa, tras 30 metros de muro pintada y cerca del atardecer, a lo que procedía a dormir recostado de la parte de muro que aún no pintaba, y siempre al otro día encontraba otra cubeta de pintura nueva junto a un plato de comida para todo el día y reiniciaba el trabajo.
No poseía reloj, no poseía nada, por eso estaba pintando. Su ropa, al igual que la cubeta, la brocha y la escalera, se lo habían dado ellos, por eso pintaba sin quejarse, aún sin saber cuánto tiempo llevaba pintando. Contaba los días según los metros de muro pintado que llevaba, pero llegó un punto en que no podía ver por dónde inició, así que desistió de contar y siguió pintando.

They gave him a brush, a bucket of orange paint, a ladder and ordered him to paint the wall.
That wall, light blue in color, was not very high, but it extended so far that it could be lost from sight in the horizon, giving the impression of going around the world; and maybe it did, maybe he was starting in the center of the wall and had to paint in the direction of where the sun rises to return to where it dies. And that is how he began to paint.
He started in the morning, when the first ray of sunlight caressed his eyelids, and ended when the painting was finished, after 30 meters of painted wall and close to sunset, after which he proceeded to sleep lying down on the part of the wall that was not yet painted, and always the next day he found another bucket of new paint next to a plate of food for the whole day and restarted the work.
He had no watch, he had nothing, that's why he was painting. His clothes, as well as the bucket, the brush and the ladder, had been given to him by them, so he painted without complaining, even without knowing how long he had been painting. He counted the days according to the meters of painted wall he had painted, but he reached a point where he could not see where he had started, so he gave up counting and continued painting.
Todos los días por las tardes el sol inclemente le freía la cabeza y los brazos mientras le cocinaba al horno el resto de su cuerpo dentro de la ropa. Varios otros días, la lluvia aparecía de golpe cuál niño revoltoso, ahogándolo en un diluvio y llevándose consigo lo pintado ese día en arroyos naranjas que se perdían entre las rocas del suelo. Y cada día que pasaba notaba la pintura de peor calidad (o eso creía) porque no pintaba como debía, teniendo que repintar 2, 3, hasta 5 veces un mismo tramo de muro. El olor de la pintura le asqueaba y por las noches le impedía dormir. Poco a poco empezó a cogerle asco al color naranja: la comida empezó a saberle a color naranja, el viento olía al color naranja, lo único que oía además de a si mismo era el ruido ensordecedor del color naranja que le atormentaba por las noches con pesadillas en las que se ahogaba en un mar naranja, en medio de una noche naranjada con una tormenta de centellas naranjas.
Una mañana despertó sin ánimo de pintar, miraba la cubeta nueva con desprecio y perdió su mirada al oriente. Tuvo un impulso infantil de curiosidad, quería saber si en verdad el muro le daba la vuelta al mundo, así que se levantó y dio rumbo a dónde nacía el sol.
Estuvo varios días caminando siguiendo la ruta del muro, sobreviviendo de los pocos restos que había guardado de la comida que le habían dado. Mientras más se acercaba al nacimiento del sol menos cerca lo sentía, llegó a un punto en que sus piernas simplemente se movían solas mientras mantenía el equilibrio sosteniéndose del muro.
Every day in the afternoons the inclement sun fried his head and arms while baking the rest of his body inside his clothes. On several other days, the rain would come pouring down like an unruly child, drowning him in a deluge and carrying away with it what he had painted that day in orange streams that were lost among the rocks on the ground. And every day that passed he noticed the paint was of worse quality (or so he thought) because it did not paint as it should, having to repaint 2, 3, up to 5 times the same stretch of wall. The smell of the paint disgusted him and at night it prevented him from sleeping. Little by little he began to get disgusted with the color orange: the food began to taste orange, the wind smelled orange, the only thing he could hear besides himself was the deafening noise of the color orange that tormented him at night with nightmares in which he drowned in a sea of orange, in the middle of an orange night with a storm of orange sparkles.
One morning he woke up with no desire to paint, he looked at the new bucket with contempt and lost his gaze to the east. He had a childish impulse of curiosity, he wanted to know if the wall really went around the world, so he got up and headed to where the sun was rising.
He walked for several days following the route of the wall, surviving on the few scraps he had saved from the food he had been given. The closer he got to the sunrise the less close he felt to it, he reached a point where his legs simply moved on their own as he kept his balance by holding on to the wall.
En cierto momento se tropezó con algo y cayó al suelo. Cuando pudo recobrarse se topó con el esqueleto de una persona, vestida exactamente como él, sosteniendo en sus manos, como si su vida dependiera de ello, una brocha con pintura celeste. El resto de la pared en ese punto en adelante era violeta y seguía extendiéndose hasta el infinito. Él entonces, con la poca cordura que le quedaba, ató los cabos y se levantó lo más pronto que pudo, dirigiéndose hacia donde había dejado todo. Días y noches pasaron, sobreviviendo de insectos y lagartijas que cazaba, siguió hasta donde había dejado su obra, temiendo lo peor.
Cuando llegó, sus mayores miedos se hicieron realidad: otro hombre, vestido como él y más joven que él, ya había pintado toda su pared de verde. Aquel Hombre le vio, extrañado, y preguntó si venía a traerle más pintura. Él, ya muy cansado y anciano, no hizo más que virar su vista al sur y caminar, caminar, caminar, hasta perderse en el horizonte.
¿Qué fue de él? ¿Hacia donde fue? Nadie sabe. Lo único seguro es que no hubo muro que le detuviese en su andar.
At a certain moment he tripped over something and fell to the ground. When he was able to recover he came upon the skeleton of a person, dressed exactly like him, holding in his hands, as if his life depended on it, a brush with light blue paint. The rest of the wall at that point onward was violet and continued to stretch to infinity. He then, with the little sanity he had left, tied up the ends and got up as soon as he could, heading back to where he had left everything. Days and nights passed, surviving on the insects and lizards he hunted, he continued on to where he had left his work, fearing the worst.
When he arrived, his greatest fears were realized: another man, younger than him, dressed like him, had already painted his entire wall green. The man looked at him, puzzled, and asked if he had come to bring him more paint. He, already very tired and old, did nothing but turn his eyes to the south and walk, walk, walk, until he was lost in the horizon.
What became of him? Where did he go? Nobody knows. The only sure thing is that there was no wall to stop him on his way.
