Juan Sebastián Elcano was a Basque navigator from Getaria, Spain, born around 1487. He is renowned for leading the expedition that achieved the first successful circumnavigation of the Earth. In 1519, Elcano joined Ferdinand Magellan's fleet, which set out to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. After Magellan's death in the Philippines in 1521, Elcano took command of the remaining ship, the Victoria. Under his leadership, the expedition navigated the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, and returned to Spain in 1522, completing the journey. Elcano's achievement demonstrated the feasibility of global sea travel and marked a significant milestone in maritime history
