Greetings to all members of this wonderful community. Honestly I have been quite inactive lately, with some emotional and health issues. But this days of bed rest I have finally decided to go back around here.
I am an artist, specifically a graphic artist. By using the term "Graphic Arts" usually there's the mistake of thinking it means digital art, but it's actually the umbrella term fur all sorts of visual expression, engraving techniques and printing in general. Since I started Art School felt the curiosity and it became my favorite discipline, even more than painting and drawing. I wasn't really working on it for a while, but now that ingot the chance to go back to the studio I took it without any doubt, and it definitely is what I was missing in my life, there's nothing that brings this much joy than doing what makes us more passionate. So here I will show you one day at the Graphic Arts studio, specially with the "drypoint" technique.
Drypoint is an engraving technique that is traditionally done using a steel pen to draw on a metallic surface, and then inking this matrix to get prints of said drawing. This can be pricey, so we thought of an alternative and that's why we are using acetate sheets of 0.75mm to make the matrix, which are thick enough to work with.
Un saludo a cada miembro de esta maravillosa comunidad. La verdad he estado bastante inactiva últimamente, con ciertos problemas anímicos y de salud. Pero estos días es reposo me he decidido Finalmente a volver por estos lados.
Soy artista, específicamente artista gráfico. Al utilizar el tema "artes gráficas" suele existir el error de asumir que se trata de arte digital, pero en realidad es el término que abarca las expresiones visuales, técnicas de grabado y de imprenta en general. Desde que inicie mi carrera en la escuela de artes sentí esa curiosidad y sin quererlo se transformó en mi disciplina predilecta, aún más que la pintura y el dibujo. Durante un tiempo había estado alejada de este trabajo, así que cuando se me dió la oportunidad de volver al taller la tomé sin pensarlo dos veces, y ha sido justo lo que necesitaba en mi vida, no hay nada que me llene más de alegría que estar de vuelta haciendo algo que me apasiona tanto. Así que hoy vengo a mostrarles como es un día de trabajo en el taller de artes gráficas, específicamente con la técnica de "punta seca".
La punta seca es la técnica de grabado en la que tradicionalmente se utiliza una punta de acero para dibujar sobre un soporte metálico, el cual será entintado y de ésta matriz obtendremos impresiones de éste dibujo. Esto puede ser costoso, así que pensamos en una alternativa y es por eso que estamos realizando las matrices en láminas de acetato de 0.75mm el cual tiene un buen grosor para trabajar.
The first thing is to have in hand the drawing we're using as a reference, we have to keep in mind that the final print is going to be a mirror image of it, so if there is any calligraphy we should write backwards. I'm using some artwork from my sketchbook that bear some connection. We place the piece of acetate over and we trace the drawing with the steel pen.
Lo primero es tener a la mano el dibujo que vamos a usar como referencia, debemos tener en cuenta que la impresión será una imagen "espejo", así fue de llevar escritura debemos escribir al revés. Yo decidí utilizar algunos bocetos de mi sketchbook que llevan cierta relación entre si. Se coloca el acetato previamente cortado al tamaño correcto, y se traza sobre el con la punta de acero.
When tracing on the acetate we have to keep touching it to make sure we are really engraving, because in these lines we are going to deposit the ink, so I like to go over again to really make sure the lines will stay there. When the matrix is done we can get ready to "ink" them, at the studio we use lithography ink, but there are many water based inks available, so we put ink on some plates and we proceed to spread it on the acetate.
Al trazar sobre el acetato hay que tener en cuenta que debemos poder palpar los surcos, pues en ellos será donde se deposite la tinta, así que para asegurarme me gusta volver a repasar un poco algunas líneas. Cuando las matrices están listas podemos prepararnos para entintar, en este taller utilizamos tintas litograficas, aunque hay unas a base de agua en el mercado, así que la tinta la colocamos en bandejas y procedemos a esparcirla sobre las laminas de acetato.
The paper should be previously moisten, because we are using thick and heavy paper and they should be moist so the absorb the ink correctly.
El papel debe haberse puesto a humedecer previamente, pues utilizamos papeles gruesos de gran gramaje y es necesario que tengan cierta humedad para absorber la tinta correctamente.
I also like to make a template, a guide to get a more precise print. So on a bigger paper I trace the size of the printing paper, then I place the matrix where I want it to be placed and I trace around it. Then is just a matter of placing it under the acrylic of the printing press and I'll have a guide.
También antes de imprimir me gusta elaborar un registro, lo cual es una guía para tener una impresión más precisa. Sobre un papel grande trazo la medida del papel que utilizare para imprimir, y luego ubico la matriz donde quiero que quede ubicada y trazo el contorno de ésta. Luego es solo cosa de colocarla bajo el acrílico de la prensa y tendré una guía.
Once the matrix is inked, we clean off the excess, for this we use tissue paper, or phone book paper. The correct cleaning will assure we get a precise print. Once it's clean, we place it on the bed of the press just above the mark on the template, we dry the excess water on the paper and we carefully place it over the matrix taking the guide in consideration. And then it's time to make the press work.
Una vez entintada la matriz, debemos limpiar los excedentes, para esto empleamos papel de seda, o papel de guía telefónica. La correcta limpieza nos garantiza una impresión más precisa. Una vez limpia, se coloca en la cama de la prensa justo sobre la marca en el registro, quitamos un poco de humedad del papel y lo colocamos sobre la matriz guiandonos con el registro. Y de allí es hora de pasar por la prensa.
Now we have to find a place to let the prints dry, and we clean the press and the matrix with kerosene. Here I'll show my prints, for now I will work on a couple more engravings to later dedicate an entire day of printing.
Luego debemos disponer de un lugar donde dejar secar las impresiones, y limpiamos las matrices y la prensa con kerosene. Éstas fueron las pruebas de impresión que realice, por ahora trabajaré en dos matrices más para luego dedicar un día entero a imprimir únicamente.
