We're now at Day Four of HiveBloPoMo. You can read more about it here. It's a worthy challenge for those who are regular bloggers, or trying to become regular bloggers.
Today's writing prompt is "Today is 'Use Your Common Sense Day' — tell a story about it."
"Common" Sense?
Yesterday, I went to our local pharmacy to pick up a prescription for Mrs. Denmarkguy. It had evidently been sitting there for a few days because they had actually made a "courtesy reminder call" that morning.
"I'd like to pick up my wife's prescription; you called this morning!"
The pharmacy tech gets on the computer and starts scrolling through stuff. I find myself wondering why she doesn't just look in the bins under our last name, but figure they have their procedure...
More scrolling happens and then the tech asks "Do you know what it was FOR?"
I name the drug, and she goes back to scrolling. Then she offers "This is kinda weird, because they don't usually make courtesy calls on Wednesdays," like that somehow is a clue to a great riddle.
"I don't think we have that in stock!" she finally declares... to which I answer "Umm... this has already been FILLED and is here waiting; that's why they called! It's not in one of your bins back there?"
"I just don't see anything here," she says, "Let me check with the manager."
Seems to me this might be code for "I have no fucking clue what I'm doing," but I keep that to myself.
The senior pharmacy tech comes over and is told the whole story — correctly, even — and starts tapping away at the keyboard... eventually coming to the conclusion that "It looks like it was filled 9 days ago, on the 25th."
And, therefore, comma....?
The senior tech heads to the back area to check on something among the automating dispensing machines; then checks the computer again.
"Might it be in one of your bins?" I suggest again.
She eyes me a bit too sharply and says "We put drugs back in inventory if they haven't been picked up within a certain amount of time!"
"But then, WHY would they have called us this morning?" I offer.
Clearly irritated now, she says "let me check with the pharmacist and see if we can RE-fill it for you. But I don't think we have it in stock."
She stomps off to get Don, our typically very friendly pharmacist. Don comes over, walks directly to the alphabetized rack of prescriptions ready to be picked up, picks out the prescription, hands it to the tech and goes back to work.
Not so much as a "sorry about that" from either of the techs...
Whatever happened to people's ability to examine what makes sense before just blindly following some set of protocols? Think for yourself much, lately...?
Sometimes I don't feel like I am brave enough for this world...
Thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your week! See you again for the next one...
