Yesterday morning I was up early again thanks to the uber noisy birds outside. I got to see some of PDC matches before the Utd match came on.
Stupid ass Martinez got himself a red card for bowling over Hojland which lead to Utd actually winning a game. I didn't watch the rest as I had to take off for flying.
Headed out for Scoop with the sky devoid of any clouds.
I was at the lz at 10am but it took Isaac and Ralph a bit to get there.
The bumblebee was all over the hawthorne flowers.
We got hiking around 10:30 and the trail was littered with various fungus and masses of wild strawberries in flower.
It was warm already and my legs kicked into hiking mode. My kit is way lighter now and the pack rides really nicely so I can just keep going.
A bit over a mile into the hike I came around a bend and all of a sudden a turkey hen blew up freaking out. I looked down to see a clutch of day old turkey chicks. There are 4 of them in the middle of the picture. They didn't move much as she was freaking out all around me. I picked one of the chicks up and pet it a couple times before setting it back down and walking on. The hen plodded along in front of me then cut of the trail and headed back for her chicks. Isaac and Ralph were right by them and hiked past to let her find them again.
The hike was a bit off for directions but caught the short cut this time which cuts off at least half a mile.
All to get to the ridge up there.
I had myself a long ways ahead of Isaac and Ralph and stood on the point watching for them hiking up the trail. I eventually saw Isaac make the bend way below.
My shirt was completely soaking wet which the wind did some nice cooling with as I hoofed it along the ridge.
The tall phlox was all in bloom around the launch.
It was before noon when I got to launch and had more than enough time to let my shirt dry in the wind and sun.
I hung out on top for a while and waited for Ralph and Isaac to arrive. The winds were variable and the thermals cycles were strong at times. I had sat and watched the cycles for a while and they finally calmed down some. I setup my wing and got everything ready then waited for the right cycle of wind to come through.
The wind turned a bit cross which had me swing to the right and get drug through the branches of the two downed trees.
Soon I was in the air and flying south along the ridge.
I flew along the ridge and was soon well above takeoff.
The open spot along the ridge is where I launched from.
After my collapse at Parker this flight was a "get back on the horse" flight for me. I didn't need it to be long but I needed to be in the air.
As I was heading for the lz I flew over the two little hills at he bottom of the pic and got this really nice bubble of lift.
Then as I turned towards Bald I noticed a gaggle of birds at the top of the meadow right at tree line and they were all circling in a thermal down low. I was heading for it but was too low so went to land.
I had some height still so had to bleed it off then got my final glide to land.
I touched down super gentle AGAIN. All of my landings with this wing have been badass so far!
Landed about 100 feet from the car and soon had my stuff gathered and then a beer in my hand.
Mike ended up arriving later and hiked up. He got this shot of me in flight.
I pulled out the camp chair and sat in the shade of the hawthorne bush to watch for them. Neither ended up launching by the time I was ready to head for home. Isaac and Ralph got about 20 minute flights each and Mike got an hour.
I headed for home and was quite happy to do the same, relax. Was a rather busy week. Rode bike to lake to kit, hike and fly Quartzite through the rain, Flew Inkler's before the gust front hit, took the massive collapse flying at Parker's, then hiked the 5k and flew Scoop yesterday.
The boys setup the sprinkler with the trampoline had had a blast with it.
Soaking was much needed and sleep hit hard.
I woke to the loud birds again and then minutes later the band of rain showers moved over. It's gone now and was just a smattering. I think we will be going on a bike ride to the lake today as the boys wanted to yesterday. I might haul my wing along to try kiting though I'm not a fan of the lake for kiting the winds will be strong so it just might work.
