I have always heard that humor is medicine for the soul. And after reading the post of my dear friend @jesuslnrs, where he told how humor videos helped him to overcome difficult moments, I couldn't help but come to tell you about some videos that, for me, are a real gem.
Siempre he escuchado que el humor es medicina para el alma. Y después de leer el post de mi querido amigo @jesuslnrs, donde contaba cómo los videos de humor lo ayudaron a superar momentos difíciles, no pude evitar venir a contarles sobre unos videos que, para mí, son una verdadera joya.
I love intelligent humor, well thought out and with just the right touch of sarcasm. And I think that defines very well one of the best comedians in my country: Erika de la Vega. In her time, Erika had a show called Erika Tipo 11, where she always started with a monologue on any topic, especially on those customs that make us Venezuelans laugh at ourselves.
Although today her channel has evolved and is no longer 100% comedy -she herself has been able to reinvent herself-, there are still those little gems on her YouTube channel that every time I need to laugh out loud, I go back to look for them.
A mí me encanta el humor inteligente, bien pensado y con ese toque de sarcasmo justo. Y creo que eso define muy bien a una de las mejores comediantes de mi país: Erika de la Vega. En su momento, Erika tuvo un programa llamado Erika Tipo 11, donde siempre arrancaba con un monólogo sobre cualquier tema, especialmente sobre esas costumbres tan nuestras de los venezolanos que nos hacen reírnos de nosotros mismos.
Aunque hoy su canal ha evolucionado y ya no es 100% comedia —ella misma ha sabido reinventarse—, todavía quedan en su canal de YouTube esas joyitas que cada vez que necesito reírme a carcajadas, vuelvo a buscar.
There is everything from the classics about Miss Venezuela to how to recognize a Venezuelan abroad. It is material to spend hours laughing with a fresh humor, without the need to fall into vulgarity or mockery in bad taste. Personally, I don't like black humor; I don't think you have to make others feel bad to get a smile out of them. That's why I identify so much with Erika's videos.
Doing stand-up comedy is not easy. You have to know how to read the audience, manage reactions and, at the same time, follow a previously rehearsed routine. That's why I admire Erika so much, because even though she is now more focused on her more serious side as a presenter, her charisma and sense of humor are always present.
Hay de todo: desde los clásicos sobre el Miss Venezuela, hasta cómo reconocer a un venezolano en el exterior. Es material para pasar horas riendo con un humor fresco, sin necesidad de caer en lo vulgar o en burlas de mal gusto. Personalmente, no me gusta el humor negro; no creo que haya que hacer sentir mal a otros para sacar una sonrisa. Por eso, me identifico tanto con los videos de Erika.
Hacer comedia estilo monólogo —o stand-up como se dice ahora— no es nada fácil. Hay que saber leer al público, manejar las reacciones y, a la vez, seguir una rutina previamente ensayada. Por eso admiro tanto a Erika, porque aunque ahora esté más enfocada en su faceta como presentadora más seria, su carisma y sentido del humor siempre están presentes.
One of my favorite monologues is Disney's Princesses, where he uses humor to point out the inconsistencies of princess stories. As he mentions each princess and transposes their stories to real life, it's impossible not to burst out laughing!
Uno de mis monólogos favoritos es el de Princesas de Disney, donde usa el humor para señalar las incoherencias de los cuentos de princesas. A medida que menciona cada princesa y traslada sus historias a la vida real, ¡es imposible no soltar una carcajada!
Another must-see classic is The Marriage, where Erika hilariously explores how life changes after marriage. She talks about male hypochondria, the transition from “I” to ‘we’, the loss of modesty in cohabitation, and those “detective skills” that appear in the couple... a masterpiece of humor!
Otro clásico imperdible es el de El Matrimonio, donde Erika explora de forma divertidísima cómo cambia la vida después de casarse. Habla de la hipocondría masculina, la transición del “yo” al “nosotros”, la pérdida del pudor en la convivencia, y esas “habilidades de detective” que aparecen en la pareja… ¡una obra maestra del humor!
If you have a little time, check out his channel. Of course, you're going to have to search a bit because these videos are over 13 years old... but like good humor, they are still completely relevant. If you've seen any of his monologues, I'd love to read them in the comments!
