A couple of weeks ago I made a post about the Robin Hood coin. Since then I have received the other 2 coins in this series.
This stunning silver 3-coin series is issued by the Austrian Mint in celebration of its 825th Anniversary of its founding by Duke Leopold V.
Leopold founded the Mint in 1194 using part of the 35,000 kilograms of silver extorted from the people of England for the release of King Richard 'The Lionheart.'
The reverse of these coins feature:
1st coin of the series features a depiction of Leopold portrayed forward facing, dressed in armor and chain mail while holding a sword in a battle ready pose. A banner waves in the background inscribed with the date "1194."
2nd coin of the series features a design representing the original Burg Wiener Neustadt, the first castle built in the city. Wiener Neustadt literally translates as New Vienna and was purpose-built to defend southeastern Austria from the Kingdom of Hungary during the 12th century. The city was built from nothing around a central castle, the Burg Wiener Neustadt. Funds to construct the castle were provided by Duke Leopold V from the ransom of 15 tonnes of silver paid to him by King Richard I of England to free his forces and allow for safe travel through Austria on their return from the Crusades in the Middle East.
3rd coin of the series honors the legend of Robin Hood, the origin of which can be traced back to the period of conflict between Leopold and England's King Richard I.
The obverse of all three coins features a modernized rendition of the official seal of Duke Leopold V, depicting an armored knight on horseback with a shield and banner in his grip.
