When the Silver Gold Stackers community voted on the proposal to change the way the @ssg-community account operates it was a really close vote. A lot of members supported the proposal because they wanted to see a return to focus on rewarding precious metals content using the #SilverGoldStackers tag, but a lot of members also wanted the freedom to write about other things and still be supported.
So while the vote was being conducted and when the code for Precious 2.0 was being designed in late August we were thinking a lot about how we might come up with a compromise that could bring a focus to producing precious metals content on the tag but would also still support members producing other quality content too. That’s when we came up with the idea of the Precious Gems, so a new secret feature was developed for Precious 2.0 that we could unlock when the time was right…

First we wanted to give the #SilverGoldStackers tag a really good push, do our best to encourage members to write about precious metals and maybe re-engage with some of the older members of the community who had drifted away. That push has been successful to some degree and while we’ve encouraged a few members to refocus their posting efforts there still isn’t really enough precious metals content being produced for Precious 2.0 to vote on. Even though we maxxed out our Gold Tier vote at 100% we’ve struggled to keep Voting Power consistently below 100% without some manual intervention.
The manual intervention was only ever intended to be a short term solution while we gave Precious 2.0 some time to find her new equilibrium. However, now that she’s had a chance to show what she can do and we’re still flirting with 100% VP semi-regularly it might be time for us to Unlock the Precious Gems feature - so let dive into how that actually works.

The idea is that if you make a qualifying post on the #SilverGoldStackers tag then you are credited with a “Precious Gem” which you can use up on your next post OFF the tag (which would NOT normally qualify for a vote) to still get a vote from Precious 2.0. You then can’t get another vote on a post that isn’t using the #SilverGoldStackers tag until you earn another Precious Gem. The result of this is that as long as at least 50% of your posts are about precious metals and using the #SilverGoldStackers tag then you can still get Precious 2.0 to support you on your other posts about your other interests.
With a broader appeal for subscribers it will potentially help us spend the excess VP to keep us consistently below 100% and still have a focus on supporting both the People AND the Content of the Silver Gold Stackers community. At first we will try to keep things simple and unlock this feature so that only one Precious Gem can be held by each member at a time, but it is designed to be configurable if we want more flexibility in future once members get a handle on how it works.

Of course, if we are supporting content that is not using the #SilverGoldStackers tag it will be important for us to still review what Precious 2.0 is voting on and some quality guidelines will need to be put in place to protect the integrity of our upvoting service going forward. The intention is to gradually increase these quality guidelines over time once Precious 2.0 finds an equilibrium point for its VP because the last thing we want to do is to attract whale downvotes to Precious 2.0 as that would potentially taint the community account and hurt all members.

We hope that members will be supportive of Unlocking the Precious Gems feature. It is intended to be a good compromise solution that is reflective of the initial proposals split vote, but if enough members believe it is necessary then we can hold another vote about unlocking this feature so please let us know what you think with a comment below.
