BLUE SKY
The role of Blue Sky in The Process is big ideas. A long time ago, this might have been called Brainstorming. Blue Sky is wide open and unfettered. Any idea can be included in Blue Sky. A lot of Blue Sky ideas start with what if, I wonder if, has anyone ever?
Blue Sky presentation within Hive Five can be generated by any team member or any interested party. Some Blue Sky ideas may become part of a public forum.
There is etiquette in introducing Blue Sky and also there is etiquette in responding to Blue Sky.
Rule 1: Announce that your idea is Blue Sky. This notifies all parties that it's an idea, and often a big idea.
Rule 2: Write down Blue Sky ideas, somewhere. Take notes as the originator or as a participant when Blue Sky is presented.
Rule 3: Blue Sky is always positive. The introducing party and the receiving parties can only offer positive comments under Blue Sky. The receiving party is primarily listening and may ask broad questions about what the Blue Sky idea may accomplish. Recipients may introduce positive ideas to further Blue Sky.
Rule 4:Blue Sky cannot be fettered by reality or negativity. This is Blue Sky. It's up high. Don't try to ground Blue Sky.
Rule 5: Blue Sky can be revisited infinitely. Blue Sky may presented as a Flier if someone in Hive Five will champion the idea.
Rule 6: Blue Sky is completely acceptable with a suspended reality. We work from the initial idea that there are no limitations for the Blue Sky idea to become reality.
Let's put this into an example.
Blue Sky idea is presented as:
I think we should develop jello as a battery.
Appropriate recipient responses.
*Will this be used in specific industries or locations? Who can *benefit from jello as a battery?
Inappropriate recipient responses.
Jello can't hold an electrical charge without degrading quickly. Jello melts. This idea has no merit. No one will ever use jello as a battery. How would you even start trying to make jello into a battery?
Appropriate recipient input.
Have you thought about the jello only being green? A jello battery that is green in color might be well received by the general public.
What happens as the jello reaches the end as a battery? If it can be turned to compost or if it's edible, that would be pretty awesome.
Inappropriate recipient input
This will take a lot of money and time to try to accomplish. Other people have tried this and failed. People will laugh at us for even having this idea.
Blue Sky is a pure idea that is unmarred by current reality or prejudice. There is no judgement in Blue Sky. As Blue Sky develops, there may be new ideas or a call to action. Flier is the next step after Blue Sky, but first we must consider Driver.
