Hive Five is a group of friends that develops dapps and services for the Hive Community. As we grow, we operate under The Process. This post is part of a curated content about The Hive Five Process. We share our process because we think it is good operations for any organization to follow.
THE ROLE OF FLIER IN THE HIVE FIVE PROCESS
Noble flier who yearns to soar into the wide open blue, we support you. But first we must build the plane.
FLIER
First, we will clear up the semantics. We cling to the old American definition of flier in regards to "taking a flier" which means taking a risk. Not to dwell too long on the minute, Flyer and Flier are fairly interchangeable and either would be acceptable in communicating this role in the Hive Five Process.
The role of the Flier is the risk taker. While Blue Sky is delivering an idea, Flier is presenting a plan, all though it may still be a "Fly By The Seat of Your Pants and Hope Not To Die" plan.
When presenting Flier in the Hive Five Process, it is good to have your ideas on a Flyer: a written presentation. Fliers are a request for the Hive Five team to expend time, talent, skill and money.
There is some etiquette in Flier, but expect hard questions when presenting. Fliers are when we bring an idea to life.
Rule 1: Announce that you are presenting a Flier to the Hive Five team. Fliers should only be presented in a called meeting with all team members present. The presenter sets the meeting.
Rule 2: Be prepared with a synopsis of the Flier. What will it accomplish; what is the time frame; what is needed from the team and how much do you expect it to cost?
Rule 3: Runways are short. The Build needs to be fast and cheap. Fliers start in a Baby Ace at best and many fliers will be ultra-lights.
Rule 4: State the ejection point. If the Flier is in a nose dive, when do we reach for the parachute?
Rule 5: Flier approval for Hive Five funding requires unanimous support. Fliers can be solo funded by a team member, however, planes in the air belong to the Hive Five Team.
Rule 6: Fliers are ranked and worked in a priority order based on Hive Five Team approval.
- Tier 1: All five members approve of the Flier, then the flier is First Tier priority. All team members work vigorously so the Flier becomes airborne.
- Tier 2: If more than one, but less than 5 team members approve, the flier is Second Tier priority and must taxi on the runway until First Tier is in the air.
- Tier 3: If only one member approves of a Flier (self-funded), then the Flier is Third Tier priority and is in the hangar. Everyone can work on the flier in the hangar and contribute to the build, but not while other planes are on the runway.
Rule 7: Fliers should evolve to produce revenue on a large scale and preferably in an automated or less labor intensive way. The Baby Ace should be replaceable with a commercial jet at some point.
The Hive Five Process expects that Fliers are fun, scary, and exhilarating. There will be wrecks left smoldering at the end of the runway. Some Fliers may never lift and others may lift but not travel far.
Kitty Hawk was 12 seconds. We can do that!
