Hi guys. My journey that started 2 weeks ago is still going strong. After checking out Sagalassos, I set out to see Kibyra, another lesser-known ancient city in this region. It didn't seem possible any other way. As the distances between us shortened, Kibyra seemed to be calling out to me. It was my first time visiting there. When I was a student, I had visited almost all of the ancient cities in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. I was obsessed with it. Actually I loved it so much that I worked as a tour guide for a few years. Exploring these places with historical heritage and meeting new people gave me great pleasure. I have a lot to tell about my experiences at that time, but perhaps in another posts. For now let me spill the tea about Kibyra, because this place had me totally hooked.
Merhaba sevgili dostlar. 2 hafta önce başlayan yolculuğum hala sürüyor. Sagalassos ziyaretimden birkaç gün sonra, bu bölgenin bir başka az bilinen antik kenti olan Kibyra'yı görmek üzere yola koyuldum. Başka türlüsü pek mümkün görünmüyordu. Aramızdaki mesafeler kısaldıkça, Kibyra adeta beni çağırıyordu. Buraya ilk kez gidiyordum. Öğrenciyken Ege ve Akdeniz bölgesindeki antik kentlerin hemen hemen hepsini gezmiştim. O dönemde bu gezilerden ne kadar keyif aldığımı fark ettiğimden sonrasında birkaç yıl tur rehberliği yaptım. Hem yeni insanlarla tanışmak, hem tarihi miras barındıran bu yerleri dolaşmak bana çok fazla keyif veriyordu. O sırada yaşadıklarımla ilgili çok fazla anlatacaklarım var ama belki bir başka yazıda. Bugün sizlere beni kendine hayran bırakan Kibyra'yı anlatmak istiyorum.
Kibyra is located in the district of Gölhisar, in the province of Burdur, which is in Turkey. To get to the ancient city, I first went to this charming district. The weather forecast said it would rain. Our rain here is not like normal rain, it is the kind that is said to pour from buckets. I was worried about getting caught at the top of the mountain. Luckily what I was afraid of did not happen. It only drizzled occasionally and I was fine with it. The streets of Gölhisar were empty. I think the cold weather had something to do with it. Since I had never been there before, I had no idea what the normal state of things was like. I grabbed a tea in a cardboard cup from a little pastry shop and set off towards the mountains. I knew I had to head to the top to find the Lycian city.
Kibyra günümüzde Burdur'un Gölhisar ilçesinde bulunmakta. Antik şehre ulaşabilmek için önce bu şirin ilçeye gittim. Meteoroloji yağmur gösteriyordu. Bizim buranın yağmurları öyle sıradan yağmurlardan değil, bardaktan boşanırcasına denilen cinsten. Bir taraftan da "Umarım dağın başında yakalanmam" diye içimden geçiriyordum. Neyse ki korktuğum başıma gelmedi. Sadece ara sıra çiseledi ki ben ona dünden razıydım. Gölhisar sokakları bomboştu. Sanırım bunda havanın soğuk olmasının da etkisi vardı. Daha önce gelmediğim için buraların normal hali nasıldır hiç bilmiyordum. Karşıma çıkan küçük bir pastaneden karton bardakta çay alıp ısınmaya çalışarak dağlara doğru yola koyuldum. Likya kentini aramam gereken yerin dağların tepesi olduğunu biliyordum.
I was happy to stumble upon this beautiful mosque, it later became my guide when I thought I was lost. After leaving behind the tiny houses of Gölhisar, which greeted me with the herald of spring flowers, the ruins of Kibyra began to appear on the horizon. After a long climb, I finally reached the top of the mountain and as soon as I saw the breathtaking view from above, I almost forgot all my fatigue.

The attendant at the entrance was super friendly and really knew his stuff. When he saw me, he asked with curiosity, "Did you come alone? What's your duty?" When I told him I came for sightseeing, he offered me to have tea inside and warm up. He was a local here. It was clear that he had a lot of knowledge about the region's history. I would have loved to chat with him, but on the other hand, there were many places I needed to discover before the day was over. So, without wasting any more time, I headed off to see Kibyra's necropolis.
Girişteki görevli oldukça ilgili ve bilgiliydi. Beni görünce "Yalnız mı geldiniz? Göreviniz ne?" diye merakla sordu. Gezmeye geldiğimi söyleyince içeride çay içip ısınmayı teklif etti. Buranın yerlisiymiş. Yörenin tarihi hakkında çok fazla bilgiye sahip olduğu belliydi. Kalıp kendisiyle muhabbet etmeyi çok isterdim ama diğer taraftan gün bitmeden keşfetmem gereken çok yer vardı. Bu yüzden fazla oyalanmadan rotamı Kibyra'nın nekropolüne çevirdim.
Exploring the Past in Kibyra
Kibyra is unlike any other Lycian city I have visited and shared before. The city contains structures left behind by various civilizations that have lived in these lands since the Bronze Age. According to the inscriptions on the information boards, Strabo wrote that the city was founded by the Lydians. The famous historian also mentioned that four languages were spoken at that time in Kibyra: Lydia, Pisidia, Solym, and Hellen. This means that the city carries the influences of different cultures. The ruins that have survived to the present day are quite impressive. As I mentioned in my Sagalassos trip, very destructive earthquakes occurred in this region after the AD, and significant structures were buried underground. This means that the remnants were preserved without being negatively affected by environmental factors. The excavations are not very old. A excavation work is being carried out here under the leadership of Assoc. Dr. Şükrü Özüdoğru from the university in Burdur, and new findings are emerging day by day. I came across the excavation house where the team stays at the entrance of Kibyra.
Kibyra'da Geçmişin İzleri
Kibyra daha önceki postlarımda paylaştığım Likya kentlerinden çok farklı ve eşsiz bir kent. Kentte bu topraklarda Tunç çağından beri yaşamış olan çeşitli medeniyetlerden kalan yapılar bulunmakta. Bilgilendirme levhalarındaki yazılara göre, Strabon kentin Lidyalılar tarafından kurulduğunu yazmış. Ünlü tarihçi ayrıca burada o dönemde dört dil konuşulduğunun bilgisini de aktarmış: Lidya, Pisidya, Solym ve Hellen. Bu da kentin farklı kültürlerin etkilerini barındırdığı anlamına gelir. Günümüze kadar ulaşan kalıntılar oldukça etkileyici. Sagalassos gezimde bahsetmiştim, bu bölgede milattan sonra çok etkili depremler olmuş ve önemli yapılar toprağın altında kalmış. Bu da bir bakıma kalıntıların çevresel faktörlerden olumsuz etkilenmeden korunmuş oldukları anlamına geliyor. Kazıların geçmişi çok da eski değil. Burada Burdur'daki üniversiteden Doç. Dr. Şükrü Özüdoğru'nun başkanlığında bir kazı çalışması yürütülüyor ve gün geçtikçe yeni buluntular ortaya çıkıyor. Kibyra'nın girişinde ekibin kaldığı kazı eviyle karşılaştım.
Necropolis
As I climbed upwards, the first thing That caught my eyes was the necropolis or the city's cemetery. Many sarcophagi have been found here. Considering that Kibyra was a highly influential center with a dense population and surrounded by other cities, it is very clear that more tombs will be found here.
Nekropol
Yukarı doğru tırmanırken ilk karşıma çıkan nekropol yani kentin mezarlığı oldu. Burada çok sayıda lahit bulunmuş. Kibyra'nın çok kalabalık ve çevresindeki kentler üzerinde etkili bir merkez olduğu düşünülürse burada daha fazla mezar bulunacağı çok açık.
After wandering among the sarcophagi for a while, I finally found the reliefs I was looking for. I was almost certain that I would stumble upon the head of Medusa here. As I mentioned in my previous posts, I often saw this figure in sarcophagi and house-type tombs. According to ancient beliefs, Medusa was warding off evil spirits and protecting the deceased from them. So she served as a kind of ancient talisman.

The underground chamber-type mysterious mass graves and the doors opening to these tombs are quite striking. They have created doors that seem to lead to the other world.

In the upper necropolis, many sarcophagi and their scattered pieces are found. Their black appearance indicates that they have remained on the ground and have been affected by environmental conditions.
Üst nekropolde çok sayıda lahitler ve parçaları dağınık halde bulunuyor. Kara kuru görüntüleri, bunların toprağın üstünde kalıp çevresel koşullardan etkilenmiş olduklarını gösteriyor.
As I was walking, I came across acorn bushes, juniper and cedar trees. Of course, there must be living creatures in Kibyra that eat them, but I couldn't see them.
Yürürken palamut çalıları, ardıç ve selvi ağaçları ile karşılaşıyordum. Tabii Kibyra'da bunları yiyen canlılar da yaşıyor olmalı ama onları göremedim.
The Stadium
After the necropolis, I climbed a bit higher and reached the stadion (stadium). As I mentioned when talking about the Burdur Museum, I also saw the gladiator sculptures. It is not surprising that gladiator sculptures were found during excavations in the city. Kibyra is also famous as a gladiator city. Only half of the huge oval stadium, where the gladiators' performances were held, has survived to the present day.
Stadyum
Nekropolis sonrası biraz daha yukarıya tırmanıp stadyuma ulaştım. Hatırlarsanız Burdur müzesinden bahsederken gladyatör heykellerine de yer vermiştim. Kentte yapılan kazılarda gladyatör heykellerinin bulunmuş olması şaşırtıcı değil. Kibyra gladyatör kenti olarak da ün salmış olan bir yer. Gladyatörlerin gösterilerinin yapıldığı koskoca oval stadyumun günümüze kadar sadece bir yarısı ulaşmış.
From the inscriptions at the gate, it became clear to me that Kibyra was home to some speedy horses. It is likely that shows and races with horses were held in the stadium.
Kapıdaki yazıtlardan anladığım kadarıyla Kibyra'da hızlı koşan atlar yetiştiriliyormuş. Stadyum'da atlarla gösteriler ve yarışlar yapılmış olması muhtemeldir.
There are many different types of tombs in Kibyra. One of them is the temple-type monument tomb located right next to the stadium.
Kibyra'da çok farklı mezar tipleri ile karşılaşılmakta. Stadyumun hemen yan tarafındaki tapınak tipi anıt mezar da onlardan biri.
The incredibly long stadium has a king's lodge. The stadion raise questions about where and how these giant stones were brought. Obviously, there are no such stones in the surrounding mountains. So it is clear that they were brought here from a distant place.

I passed through the gladiator's tunnel and reached the other end of the stadium. The view absolutely amazing.

Basilica
The basilica, which is under restoration, is another impressive structure of Kibyra. This building is evidence that Kibyra was an important center in ancient times.

The graves found inside the church likely belong to the people who served here. It is a different type of tomb.

There are numerous column capitals and relief panels in the garden. With the restoration works, the ancient splendor of the basilica will be revived.

The flowers around the basilica further enhance the beauty of the historical structure.

Agora
The agora is the marketplace or bazaar of the ancient times. Kibyra has a very magnificent agora. Both sides of the street are covered with columns.

On the side of the street, there are shops lined up.

There is a kind of ancient scales here. It is estimated that foods like grains were weighed and sold on these stone scales.

This basin in front of one of the shops is very striking. It is thought that that it was a fish shop and the water in the basin contained live fish.

The city's water system is also one of the most impressive and well-preserved parts.

This ancient oven in the agora suggests that a small restaurant may have been built here for the local traders. Perhaps it was not just for the traders.

While walking, I came across this game stone on the ground. I believe it found its place on the floor of the agora as it was not used for gaming purposes later on.

The inscription at the entrance of the agora states that those who engage in trade without following the rules will be banned from trading in the other 25 cities as well. From this, we can better realize how influential Kibyra was as a city.

I came across some closed doors. It is highly possible that these doors were closed by the subsequent civilizations or administrations. It seems like the order of the world has not changed much.

The temple gate opposite the agora. It has reliefs of various figures, including a lion. Lions are common in Kibyra. I also stumbled upon a lot of lion sculptures when I was at the Burdur Museum.

Tholos Nymphaeum
One of the most beautiful structures of Kibyra is this two-thousand-year-old nymphaeum (fountain). The fountain was restored recently and soon water will start flowing here again.
Antik Çeşme
Kibyra'nın en güzel yapılarından biri de bu 2 bin yıllık çeşmesi. Çeşme geçtiğimiz aylarda yeni restore edildi ve yakında burada sular yeniden akmaya başlayacak.
Structure A
Next to the fountain, there is a building called the "Structure A." It does not have an upper part, only a large basement with columns.
A Yapısı
Çeşmenin yanında A yapısı adı verilen bir yapı bulunmuş. Üst kısmı yok, sadece içinde sütunların yer aldığı geniş bir bodrum katı var.
Ancient Theater
It's a large theatre. I think it can be compared to the Myra theater, which I mentioned earlier in this region. It has a capacity of 8 thousand people. In the old days, city populations were determined by their theater capacities. In other words, it was assumed that the population was ten times the capacity of the theater seats. For this reason, it is estimated that Kibyra had a population of at least 80 thousand inhabitants.
Antik Tiyatro
Büyük bir tiyatro. Bu bölgede bahsettiğim diğer kentlerden sanırım Myra tiyatrosu ile kıyaslanabilir. 8 bin kişilik olduğu bilgisi yer alıyor. Eski usülde kent nüfusları tiyatro kapasitelerine göre belirlenirdi. Yani kabaca tiyatro koltuk kapasitesinin 10 katı nüfus olduğu dikkate alınırdı. Bu nedenle Kibyra'nın en az 80 bin nüfuslu olduğu tahmin ediliyor.
Odeon
Odeon is located near the theater. It is a small theater building and was used as a management building. It is also assumed to have been used for performances in winter since it was covered.
Tiyatronun yakınında odeon yani küçük tiyatro binası yer alıyor. Burası meclis binası olarak kullanılmış. Aynı zamanda üstü kapalı olduğundan kışın gösterilerin burada olduğu tahmin ediliyor.
There is a large Medusa mosaic on the floor of the odeon. It is currently covered to protect it from winter conditions. The mosaic on the floor can be seen in summer.

Roman Bath
The excavations of the Roman bath have been completed. The blackened areas on the upper parts make it easier to understand where the parts that remained above the ground are.

After the bath, I started walking down from Kibyra. The ancient city is established in a very wide area. I was very impressed. Also, luck was on my side. I managed to descend from the mountain without getting caught in the rain. But I was freezing. Don't you think I deserve a good coffee?

Golhisar-Style Black Cumin Coffee
I had heard that Çorotu coffee is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about coffee in Gölhisar. That's why I set out to find this coffee with the help of navigation as soon as I descended from the mountain. The navigation led me into the village.
Gölhisar Usulü Çörotu Kahvesi
Gölhisar'da kahve denilince akla ilk gelenin Çörotu kahvesi olduğunu duymuştum. Bu yüzden dağdan iner inmez navigasyondan yardım alarak bu kahvenin peşine düştüm. Navigasyon beni köyün içlerine yönlendirdi.

The prices were surprisingly reasonable. After taking a look at the menu, I decided to try the one with mastic gum.
Fiyatları şaşılacak derecede makuldu. Menüye bir göz attıktan sonra damla sakızlısını denemeye karar verdim.
Black cumin coffee was served to the table with a pitcher of water and Turkish delight. I really liked it. This coffee contains black cumin, chickpeas, and Turkish coffee.
Çörotu kahvesi masaya testi suyu ve lokum eşliğinde geldi. Çok beğendim. Kahvenin içinde çörek otu, nohut ve Türk kahvesi var.
The black marks under the cup indicated that the coffee was made directly in the cups. So asked the owner, Memiş, for permission and went into the kitchen to see how it was made.
Fincanın altındaki siyah izler, kahvenin direkt fincanlarda yapıldığını gösteriyordu. Merak ettiğim için Memiş abiden izin alıp mutfağa girdim ve nasıl yapıldıklarına baktım.
Everything was super; presentation, taste, service, ambiance... While I was there, I decided to buy a package of black cumin coffee. I paid only 55 Turkish Lira for my bill in totall. (If you ask me, I would have bought some of those pitchers and cups too, but since I'm still traveling, it would be difficult to carry them for now. I gave up on that idea. Maybe next time.)

A Short Tour of Gölhisar
After taking a coffee break, I walked around the streets of Gölhisar.
The faucets were really cute.During my visit to the Burdur museum, I saw many ceramic objects found in Kibyra. It is known that the ancient people living here were engaged in these works.

Muslukları çok şirindi. Burdur müzesinde Kibyra'da bulunan çok sayıda seramik eşyası görmüştüm. Burada yaşayan eski halkın bu işlerle uğraştığı bilinmekte.
When I got hungry, I stopped by the Teras restaurant for dinner. It was a great place with good service and food. I ordered a mushroom and cheese pide (pita), and it was amazing. The appetizers they served with the pide were also fantastic. I absolutely love appetizers, both eating and making them. I got the recipe for their incredibly tasty purple cabbage appetizer from the chef. I have to try it as soon as possible. The prices were very reasonable, and I paid a total of 70 Turkish liras for everything.

Ayrıca pidenin yanında ikram ettikleri mezeler muhteşemdi. Meze deyince benim için akan sular duruyor. Hem yemeyi hem yapmayı çok seviyorum. Ustadan inanılmaz lezzetli olan kırmızı lahana mezesinin tarifini aldım. En kısa sürede denemeliyim. Fiyatları çok uygundu. Hepsine toplamda 70 Türk lirası ödedim.

Where is Kibyra? The ancient city of Kibyra is located in the Gölhisar district of Burdur, Turkiye. This place is at the intersection of many cities. It is close to Burdur, Antalya, Fethiye and Denizli. It is easy to reach by private car or minibus.

How Much is the Entry Fee? The entrance fee to the ancient city is 60 TL. The museum card is valid. Free for children and seniors. It is recommended to consider that there is a lot of climbing involved. It is open every day between 08:30-17:00.
Dress and Other Details: It is located at an altitude of over thousand meters. As it is, it is a bit cold, clothing and shoes should be chosen accordingly. I recommend bringing water with you. The terrain is quite large and there is no cafe up there.
