After the pandemic, which deeply affected our lives for about two years, there has been a global travel craze. I would travel abroad every year before the pandemic. Since it became more difficult to go abroad due to the restrictions of the pandemic and the subsequent inflationary period, I had started to make my travel plans domestically for the last two years. I also mentioned this in my Aegean tour and day-trip posts. However, it was the time for me to start to travel abroad. In the third part of my Thessaloniki travel post series, I will write about White Tower and Aristotelous Square.

Yaklaşık iki yıldır hayatımızı derinden etkileyen pandemiden sonra küresel çapta bir seyahat çılgınlığı yaşanıyor. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Pandeminin getirdiği seyahat kısıtlamaları ve sonrasında gelen enflasyonist dönem nedeniyle yurtdışına çıkmak iyice zorlaştığından ben de seyahat planlarımı son iki yıldır yurtiçine yönelik yapmaya başlamıştım. Bunu Ege turu ve günübirlik yaptığım seyahat yazılarında da belirtmiştim. Buna karşın, benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Selanik gezisi yazı serimin üçüncü bölümünde sizlere Beyaz Kule ve Aristotelous Meydanı’ından bahsedeceğim.
In the second post of my Thessaloniki tour, I wrote about the Rotunda, Arch and Palace of Emperor Galerius together with Panagia Dexia Church, which are within walking distance of each other. Last, we came to the promenade of Thessaloniki, which resembles that of Izmir, and returned to the hotel. The next day the weather was sunny and beautiful. We had a good breakfast at the hotel in the morning. Then, we walked straight towards the Thessaloniki promenade. Let me add the photos of the places on a sunny day, which we saw yesterday.
Selanik turumun ikinci yazısında sizlere birbirlerine yürüme mesafesinde olan İmparator Galerius’un Rotundası, Kemeri, ve Sarayı ile Panagia Dexia Kilisesi’nden bahsetmiştim. En son, Selanik’in İzmir’inkine benzeyen kordonuna gelip otele geri dönmüştük. Ertesi gün hava güneşli ve güzeldi. Sabah otelde iyi bir kahvaltı yaptık. Daha sonra doğruca Selanik kordonuna doğru yürüdük. Dün gördüğümüz yerlerin güneşli bir gündeki fotoğraflarını da buraya ekliyeyim.
The first place to visit on the Thessaloniki promenade is, of course, the White Tower, the symbol of the city. According to the information in our Thessaloniki tourist guidebook, the White Tower is an old Byzantine tower. After the Ottoman Empire had conquered the city, a new one was built on top of this old tower. White Tower was prison during the Ottoman period; It was also used as a place of mass execution of rebellious Janissaries during the reign of Mahmud II. That's why it was called Bloody Tower at that time. After Greece recaptured Thessaloniki, the Tower was painted in white to erase its bad reputation. However, over time, this paint faded and the tower regained its old color. The White Tower is a historical monument that is definitely visited by those who come to Thessaloniki today. To enter the tower, there was a queue in front of the tower, just like in front of the Galata Tower in Istanbul. Since our time was limited, we did not want to wait in line and enter the tower.
Selanik kordununda ilk uğranılan yer tabi ki şehrin sembolü olan Beyaz Kule. Bizdeki Selanik turist rehberinde yer alan bilgilere göre Beyaz Kule eski bir Bizans kulesidir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin şehri ele geçirmesinden sonra bu eski kulenin üstüne yenisi yapılmış. Osmanlı döneminde Beyaz Kule hapishane; ayrıca II Mahmud döneminde ise isyan eden yeniçerilerin toplu infaz edildiği bir yer olarak kullanılmış. Bu nedenle o zamanlar Kanlı Kule denmiş. Yunanistan’ın Selanik’I geri almasından sonra kulenin bu kötü namını silmek için Kule beyaza boyanmış. Fakat, zamanla bu boya dökülmüş ve kule eski rengini almıştır. Beyaz kule günümüzde Selanik’e gelenlerin mutlaka uğradığı bir tarihi eser. Kuleye girmek için kulenin önünde İstanbul’daki Galata Kulesi’nin önündeki gibi sıra vardı. Zamanımız kısıtlı olduğu için sıra bekleyip kuleye girmek istemedik.
We continued to explore Thessaloniki with the map in hand. Our next stop was Aristotelous Square, as it was within walking distance of the White Tower. We arrived in the square after a 10-minute walk along the promenade. When I go abroad, such squares particularly attract my attention. Aristotelous Square is a relatively plain square with a large empty space in the middle. There is a statue of Aristotelous, the teacher of The Alexander Great, on the side where the cafes are located. The buildings at the entrance to the square are curved, creating a pleasant view. After the city was captured from the Ottomans in 1912 and the great fire in 1917, the square was designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard.
Elimizde harita ile Selanik’i keşfetmeye devam ettik. Beyaz kuleye yürüme mesafesinde olduğu için bir sonraki durağımız Aristotelous Meydanı’ydı. Kordonda 10 dakikalık yürüyüşten sonra meydana vardık. Yurtdışına gittiğim zamanlarda bu tarz meydanlar özellikle ilgilimi çekiyor. Aristotelous Meydanı ortasında büyük bir boş alan olan nispeten sade bir meydan. Kafelerin olduğu tarafta Büyük İskender'in hocası Aristotelous’un heykeli bulunuyor. Meydana girişteki yapılar ise kavisli olduğundan hoş bir görüntü oluşuyor. 1912 yılında şehrin Osmanlılardan alınmasından ve 1917’deki büyük yangından sonra meydanın dizaynı Fransız mimar Ernest Hébrard tarafından yapılmıştır.
It was noon. As we had a full breakfast in the morning, we were not hungry yet. We entered one of the cafes in Aristotelous Square, had some drink and rested. The sky had been a little cloudy.
Saat öğlen olmuştu. Sabah iyi bir kahvaltı yaptığımız için halen açıkmamıştık. Aristotelous Meydanı'ndakı kafelerden birine oturup bir şeyler içtik ve dinlendik. Hava biraz bulutlanmıştı.
