I know that there usually aren't any game reviews posted here since this community is more firearm and practical survival knowledge. I did think that this game made by Hinterland Studio was a great thing to do to get in the mindset. I have some background doing a brief stint with instructing a portion of survival school in the military, and the makers of this game did a pretty good job of highlighting some of the main concerns of staying alive in a frozen wasteland like the Northern reaches of Canada with little help in sight.
Shelter and exposure to the elements are some of the main points in the game. Staying outside without cover from the winds will whittle your body heat down to nothing, incidentally, building and maintaining fires is a very common theme in the gameplay. Melting snow with a fire and boiling the water is a necessary daily chore to stay hydrated.
Some areas are easier to scavenge canned goods and nonperishables, but they eventually run out and you might end up trying to ice fish or trap rabbits for those needed calories.
There are risks in the gameplay besides the elements, hunger and thirst. There are other creatures like timber wolves and bears that are also in search of easy prey. Believe me, they will mess you up if you try to take a bear without proper precautions. Firearms can be found, but ammunition is very scarce. Also, in most of the survival portion of the game, there are not any other human characters to interact with so there is a sense of isolation and loneliness once you really get into the immersive experience.
It may be going for $34.99 USD right now, but I managed to pay nothing for it through Epic Games when they had it as one of their free games. If you are interested, be on the lookout for more game giveaways or go ahead and purchase it to support the great studio that produced it.
