Hive is smiling wide this week with prices on the rise again, and as usual, I'm sticking to my weekly Splinterlands challenge. This time, the battle I faced was nothing short of magical—and mentally exhausting. I had to deal with three rulesets at once, and let me tell you, it wasn’t about facing an overpowered opponent... it was about surviving a trap of conditions that punish the careless.
So buckle up—I'm taking you into a battlefield lined with thorns... literally and strategically.
The Ruleset Triple Combo: A Strategic Minefield
In this match, I faced Briar Patch, Super Sneak, and Up Close & Personal.
Let me break that down:
- Super Sneak: All Melee monsters target the backline.
- Up Close & Personal: Only Melee monsters are allowed.
- Briar Patch: Every monster gets Thorns, dealing damage back to attackers.
So basically, you're forced to use Melee, but every time you attack... you get hurt. In short: the more aggressive you are, the faster you die.
Picking My Team: When in Doubt, Call Quora
With a generous 58 mana cap, I had plenty of room to choose wisely. From the allowed elements—Fire, Water, Earth, and Dragon—I went with Earth, and for one very good reason: QUORA TOWERSHEAD
Quora isn’t your average card. She hits with Magic damage (which ignores Thorns), gains stats with every kill thanks to Bloodlust, and Heals herself every round. In a battle like this, she’s a total game-changer.
But one card alone doesn’t win battles. I needed a lineup that could absorb hits, control enemy damage, and pace the match.
Here’s the lineup I rolled with:
- PELACOR MERCENARY – With Heal and decent survivability, his attacks hurt less from Thorns.
- DISINTEGRATOR – His Demoralize reduces enemy Melee attack, perfect for this rule combo.
- QUORA TOWERSHEAD – My ace, placed safely in the middle to avoid early hits.
- GRUND – With Double Strike, he deals heavy damage—but is also Thorns-prone.
- ARKEMIS THE BEAR – Protect grants armor to all allies, which is crucial against Thorns.
- DUMACKE ORC in the back – Has Shield and Retaliate, perfect for dealing with sneak attacks.
The Battle Begins: Strategy vs Blind Fury
My opponent came out swinging with a fierce team: ISGALD VORST, SAND WORM, COASTAL SENTRY, KULU MASTERMIND, RELENOR CLEAVER, and TORHILO THE FROZEN. A solid, scary setup.
Round 1:
Chaos erupts. ISGALD VORST goes down quickly due to Super Sneak targeting. My DUMACKE ORC hits back with Retaliate but soon falls.
Round 2:
DISINTEGRATOR’s Demoralize starts to shine—enemy attacks weaken. GRUND smashes TORHILO out of the match. But then SAND WORM strikes back, eliminating ARKEMIS, and we lose our precious armor buffer.
Round 3:
Things get intense. PELACOR MERCENARY takes out COASTAL SENTRY, but dies from Thorns in a mutual knockout. His healing earlier bought him just enough time to make a difference.
Then GRUND takes a shot at KULU MASTERMIND, eats Thorns damage, and falls. But QUORA steps in, lands the final blow on KULU—and Bloodlust activates. Now she’s stronger, faster, and more dangerous.
Final Round:
Only RELENOR CLEAVER remains. A final showdown with the blood-charged QUORA. With her boosted stats and constant healing, it was just a matter of time. She finishes the fight and seals the win.

Reflections: When Thorns Teach You Strategy
What I loved about this battle is how the rulesets almost felt like traps. But that’s the fun of Splinterlands—it’s not about having the rarest cards, but knowing how to play the game smart.
I won not because I had better cards, but because I:
- Avoided Melee damage by using Magic where it mattered
- Weakened enemy attacks with Demoralize
- Protected my team with armor through Protect
- Let QUORA carry the endgame once the field thinned out

This match shows how understanding the ruleset is more important than just stacking expensive cards. The battleground changes every match—adapt, or lose.
Don’t underestimate those three little rules on top of the screen. They define your battlefield. Read carefully, plan creatively, and choose monsters that match the moment.
This time, QUORA TOWERSHEAD reminded me how one card, placed wisely, can flip the entire game.
