I will never forget the first time I heard my recorded voice on a phone. I pressed play, and the sound that came out made me freeze.
âNo way, this isnât me!â I thought. It sounded strange, so different from what I hear in my head every day. It even felt a little embarrassing.
I assumed there must have been a mistake or maybe I didnât sing well enough. So, I tried againâa second time. The result was the same.
I gave it a third shot, hoping for something different. Still, it sounded just as strange. After one final attempt, I realized this wasnât a mistake. I started questioning myself:
Maybe my voice isnât trained enough.
Maybe I just have a bad voice.
Maybe Iâm not ready for this journey.

The voice you hear when you speak feels familiarâitâs what youâve always known. But the voice on a recording? Thatâs unfamiliar. Itâs like meeting a stranger who sounds like you but doesnât feel like you.
Hereâs why: When you speak, youâre hearing your voice differently than others do. Youâre hearing it as it vibrates through your neck, chest, and head, mixing with the sound bouncing off walls and surfaces around you.
What you hear is a blend of internal and external sounds. But a recording strips all that away. Itâs just your raw voiceâthe way others hear it. The truth? Nothing about your voice has changed. Itâs always been that way.
