Recently, I reviewed a pretty horrible ROM Hack of Super Mario 64. @a1-shroom-spores/scary-piano-64-rom-hack. I wanted to find a better SM64 ROM HAck that was more unique and playable. Something with custom maps and/or levels.
I found a ROM Hack called "Emote Challenge 64" that seemed unique.
Right away I noticed the games doesn't start in front of the castle.
It's always a bad sign if a SM64 Hack starts the same as the original game. ROM Hacks without customization like unique storylines and levels are really lame and boring.
You start Emote Challenge 64 in a closed off castle room with a slanted down ramp/ hallway that is very steep. At the bottom of the ramp/hallway is another closed off room with a series of green warp pipes [with memes above them].
This ROM Hack is a classic "don't touch the lava" type game.
Each level has a drawing of a meme on the floor. You can only touch the black parts of the drawings. Every other color is lava. Every level is a red coin collection challenge. There are a lot more than 5 red coins however and the challenges are extremely difficult.
Previously, I have mentioned that most ROM Hacks are basically sequels/for advanced users.
Emote Challenge 64 is no beginners lark. You must know all the moves like side flips and long jumps. You must also have insanely perfect timing. A tiny mistake and you will touch toxic lava.
You might want to whip out the n64 controller or at leat a joystick if you want to beat this game.
I would describe the difficulty level of this game as "Advanced". Actually advanced is too liberal. It's more like "elite" or "legendary" difficulty. If you have never played Super Mario 64 you can skip this ROM Hack. I played for a few hours and didn't get any stars. 🙁
This game is clearly for obsessed players that do speed runs and stuff. In fact, it's very similar to speed runs. You have to follow exact patterns. You have to do long jumps to pinpoint areas.
I would give this ROM Hack a 7/10. It is very difficult but I like it. I will definitely replay this game and try to beat it. Emote Challenge 64 is more difficult than Super Mario 64. The term "borderline impossible" comes to mind. Look at the long jump [ABOVE] you have to do onto a tiny curved line. To be fair, this ROM Hack has the word "challenge" in it. Beginners beware.
