Today I will be reviewing Super Metroid Ascent! This is a more difficult/longer version of Super Metroid for snes. The maps are larger and there are new assets!
If you hate puzzles, confusing maps and dead ends ... avoid this ROM Hack!
If you are a Metroid expert, you should play this well built "sequel" to an snes classic!
This game is difficult. I had to take a lot of deep breaths. You pretty much need to look at the map every 10 seconds or you will keep getting lost. This ROM Hack really challenges your sense of direction. There are some very clever puzzles. You have to double back a lot ... If you can't pass an area because you dont have X move yet; try and mark that place in your head.
Don't be fooled by the title "Super Metroid Ascent". It' NOT one of those games you can just speed through. You need to collect items in a certain order. You cannot just jump upwards. In fact, the puzzles in this ROM hack are more involved than the original Super Metroid.
Even Zone 1 can be pretty difficult, so I will give a hint. IF YOU DON'T WANT A HINT, DONT READ THIS NEXT PART. If you go to the M that is highlighted on the map BELOW, it releases a bunch of map data. This makes the first part of the game a lot easier. [The start of the game is S].
Overall I would give this ROM Hack a 7/10. Metroid level creation is especially automated, there are some nice tools. Otherwise I would probably give the ROM an 8 score. These maps are better than the actual Super Metroid game. The puzzles are very challenging and multi layered. Different powerups make you double back and go through the map again. This ROM Hack is very playable; I am definitely going to try and beat it!
