This is going to be a more particular post due to what the title indicates: A recent quest to find great games to play with my brother locally on his PC.
And I seek for splitscreen games not only because his PC can handle some games easily even in that mode, but also because it sounds simpler to me than setting up a game on my old laptop to connect with his PC - as some games may be finicky to either run on the old laptop or just to connect with each other on LAN.
And the little detail that my old laptop is currently stuck with a functional albeit old external keyboard...and a touchpad, because there isn't a spare mouse for it at the moment.
So...yeah, that's basically the backstory for me to be trying out co-op games with him. For the sake of brevity with how we tend to try like four to fives a day whenever possible (and some for much longer than others), I'll give honorable mentions to several games with a few paragraphs and lock the main highlights to three games.
Prelude (Games who didn't make the cut and Honorable Mentions)
Alright, let's first get out of the way the games that, while definitely worth their money for those that are into how these games are, my brother had put low on the priority list for one reason or another.
Just to be clear, these are NOT bad games or bad co-op experiences. It's just parsing a bit of my brother's thoughts when we tried there that explain why these aren't making the cut for more co-op sessions with him.
Those who didn't make it
- Quake Enhanced
- (We played two levels of Co-op, and I like my Quake for sure...but he admitted it wasn't his style and thus felt weird to him, so he put it at the bottom of the list)
- Lego Star Wars II Gamecube
- (We played the first level and I thought it was neat, but he asked me if there were other LEGO games to try out in co-op, as he said isn't a Star Wars fan to stay interested on this one)
- Star Wars Battlefront II PS2 Co-op Campaign
- (We tried it before the Lego game, but beyond that he doesn't care about Star Wars, he also thought the game was off - he chose to set the game to Elite difficulty and we got smoked repeatedly off all our lives in the first level, but while he couldn't say well what felt weird for him, the fact he didn't tell me to retry the level we died at spoke to me that he didn't click with the game).
Honorable mentions
And now for the honorable mentions, games that I may even cover more throroughly later if I get the chance to sink more time into them.
- Day 1: Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- He put it at the bottom on the list on the first day only because of the low difficulty at the start, with Quake sitting below it the day after. He did say the graphics were interesting though with the effects and we absolutely had fun + some laughs here and there on the first world. I get why he thinks it isn't strong at the moment because it is still first world Mario, but in the unlikely case we revisit it together and get to harder worlds, it could rise up the ranks...
- Day 1: Super Mario 3D World
- We played like...I think two levels of this? Left a good impression on him though, also gave us some laughs despite the short time, and actually has stayed above at least three more cool games we enjoyed trying days after.
- Day 2: Left 4 Dead 2
- You know the game, you know the drill. We got crushed in our first Expert attempt, but he's all in for that thrill. Shoutouts to the NucleusCoop tool for making splitscreen convenient.
- Day 2: Windjammers 2
- You may already have read me talk about that game. I actually tried it with my brother a week or so after that and had quite some fun, even getting some matches recorded. Sits on his list above Mario 3D World but below L4D2 and another game I'll mention another day. Not a co-op game, I know, but still had to mention it cause it entered the list anyways.
Alright, time to get the show going with the big hits of Day 1.
Entering Legendary territory: Halo Combat Evolved
Halo, at least in the Xbox and Xbox 360 games, was a franchise that not only planted itself firmly in the grounds of being some of the best shooter games (if not the best for some) on consoles, but also taking full advantage of being a console game to offer split-screen multiplayer...and even co-op multiplayer.
The fact that Halo 1 had FOUR PLAYER SPLITSCREEN COOP is not only insane for the time, but also the kind of stuff sorely missed when Halo 5 and Halo Infinite both cut splitscreen coop off for some reason.
But back to the game at hand...it does suck that the PC ports, both the old one and the one at Master Chief Collection, do not support split-screen even if you have a beefy computer and enough gamepads for it - although I recently discovered a recent mod that addresses that handily.
My solution to play co-op though was through NucleusCoop, which not only does wizard magic to basically open multiple windows of the game and stitch them together split-screen style for a more or less seamless experience (beyond following instructions to get the games connected), but also I actually had used before for the original Halo 2 back in 2021 for a silly splitscreen session.
Whenever you get everything together though, it is pretty sweet, and even using more real screen estate than official splitscreen may offer in consoles as the windows take the full width while the games somehow adapts to that. And since NucleusCoop basically acts like two game instances...it was possible for my brother to play in the detailed Anniversary graphics...while at the same time I played with the classic graphics toggle 😂
And adapt we also had to achieve ourselves, because as I may hinted to with the L4D2 summary, he wanted all in on the difficulty...so we played in Legendary.
Only one level and yet we must have spent like half an hour between taking things slowly due to the enemy's high damage, as well as either waiting for each other to respawn if one died...or having to return to a checkpoint if both of us got shot at the same time.
The highlight was at this one room with the middle stairs and Elites attacking from aa high area that had us dying a lot until ONE attempt where I succesfully stickied an Elite with a plasma grenade (which I had to retry attempting like 3 or 4 times) and that alone helped enough to actually allow my brother to rush in and assist me.
Quite menacing, yet quite thrilling to make it through. We called it a day when the level was done, but (at least for the first day) it sat at a comfortable 3rd Place in priority of co-op games toreturn to. And it will be funny to talk later about how this was fairly tough yet balanced of a challange for both of us unlike a...certain other game with a legendary choice of difficulty.
But that one's a game for Day 2 of this, so let's move on to the two games that stand above it on the list.
The surprise favorite: Kirby and the Forgotten Land
I never expected that he would like it that much from playing the first co-op level with me that he would put it in second place of his list that day, only below a particular game I did expect he would like.
It's not that he isn't a Nintendo guy, as in fact I grew up with him and like six Nintendo consoles (N64, GC, Wii, GBA, DS, 3DS), but I guess I would put it that I could have expected Left 4 Dead 2 to dethrone it because of it being hard co-op zombie fighting action (since it was a game played the day after), and yet it didn't.
So I'm not completely sure if this jolly Kirby game in 3D sparked an old sense of discovering a super fun game like when he was younger, the novelty of Kirby finally being in 3D once and for all, or just how the gameplay additions tied with the extra depth of finding trinkets and the VERY charming presentation (plus me tagging along like a goofball as Bandana Waddle Dee) did it for him.
But yes, while we only took on the first co-op level available that day, it was super fun to play. He had a taste of that Mouthful mode goofiness with Kirby (while also noticing how those often had practical purposes to progress) while I had the taste of running with a glorified permanent weapon and attacking enemies head first.
Noticing that there's a guard button (oh hey, like Kirby Super Star) and that you roll if you move while guarding also has me hyped to when we eventually get to boss fights that really put our movement to test while fending off what it throws at us. I hope that this game, like many other Kirby games, does offer a boss rush mode when we do beat the game one day...and that it lets me Waddle Dee come along too 🤠
Now that's more like it: Resident Evil 5
If there was a game that I would imagine that would fit with his tastes and end up enjoying a lot for a co-op game, it had to be this on.
Despite the reputation it has in the Resident Evil fanbase due to the beginning of the departure in gameplay and tone that came to a head in Resident Evils 6, it definitely offers something whenever you can play it in co-op as the developers clearly designed that game for, which is also what made those contrast further with the games before them.
Nonetheless, it was fun as it was hectic to go from like, walking around the starting desolate town waiting until something happened...and when it did, it ended up being right before getting flooded with zombies left and right, trying to fend them off with limited ammo.
On the first attempts where we died to the last section where we are meant to endure until we get rescued, we died because we split while trying to achieve different things rather than sticking together and just running away until the chopper came for us.
On one hand, I tried to find a safe place high up...but the zombies always found a way to catch up and leave me knocked down - which is a Game Over if I'm down for too long and my partner couldn't get me back up, which was the case if my brother was on the lower area.
On the other hand, sometimes he was the one caught and knocked because he tried to fight the zombies and the big executioner back, only to get caught off guard while I scrambled in how to get where was (and either being too late or getting caught myself - if both of us are knocked down then it is an instant Game Over).
Eventually, we just about managed to survive and trigger the cutscene that ends the level...and could see the amusing amount of time that Chapter 1-1, on the normal difficulty rather than the higher difficulty he initially insisted on, took us.
There's a non-zero chance we end up trying this again but in the higher difficulty since I had told him that was in Normal, but that is a story to be told another day. Alongside the Resident Evil 6 one.
Yeah, we went there the next day. But that will have to wait for the next episode.
What's next?
So...his list of preference/priority for co-op games that day ended up like the following:
- Resident Evil 5
- Kirby Forgotten Land
- Halo
- Super Mario 3D World
- Super Mario Wonder (low priority)
- Quake (won't return)
But rest assured that this list will have way more to talk about on the next occasion between the new games that showed up and how they placed in what's here...although there's a chance it may be the last update since the backlog of co-op games tested and to test after Day 3 have stopped being added to "the list" due to how we've been trying to keep track what games to keep, what games to drop and what more games to try out.

Este va a ser un post más particular debido a lo que indica el título: Una reciente búsqueda de grandes juegos para jugar con mi hermano localmente en su PC.

Muy bien, primero vamos a quitar de en medio los juegos que, aunque definitivamente valen su dinero para aquellos que están en cómo son estos juegos, mi hermano había puesto bajo en la lista de prioridades por una razón u otra.
Para que quede claro, no se trata de juegos malos ni de malas experiencias cooperativas. Es sólo un poco de análisis de los pensamientos de mi hermano cuando tratamos allí que explican por qué estos no están haciendo el corte para más sesiones de co-op con él.
Los que no lo consiguieron
- Quake Enhanced
- (Jugamos dos niveles de cooperativo, y a mí me gusta mi Quake... pero él admitió que no era su estilo y que le resultaba raro, así que lo puso al final de la lista).
- Lego Star Wars II Gamecube.
- (Jugamos al primer nivel y me pareció genial, pero me preguntó si había otros juegos de LEGO para probar en cooperativo, ya que dijo que no es fan de Star Wars como para seguir interesado en este)
- Campaña cooperativa de Star Wars Battlefront II para PS2.
- (Lo probamos antes del juego de Lego, pero más allá de que no le interesa Star Wars, también pensó que el juego estaba apagado - eligió poner el juego en dificultad Elite y nos fumaron repetidamente todas nuestras vidas en el primer nivel, pero aunque no pudo decir bien lo que le pareció raro, el hecho de que no me dijera que reintentara el nivel en el que morimos me habló de que no congeniaba con el juego).

Y ahora las menciones honoríficas, juegos que puede que trate más a fondo más adelante si tengo la oportunidad de dedicarles más tiempo.
- Día 1: Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
- Lo puso al final de la lista el primer día sólo por su baja dificultad inicial, y Quake quedó por debajo el día siguiente. Dijo que los gráficos eran interesantes con los efectos y que nos lo pasamos muy bien y nos reímos un poco en el primer mundo. Entiendo por qué piensa que no es fuerte en este momento, porque sigue siendo el primer mundo de Mario, pero en el improbable caso de que volvamos a visitarlo juntos y lleguemos a mundos más difíciles, podría subir de nivel...
- Día 1: Super Mario 3D World.
- Creo que jugamos dos niveles. Dejó una buena impresión en él sin embargo, también nos dio algunas risas a pesar del poco tiempo, y en realidad se ha mantenido por encima de al menos tres juegos más fresco que disfrutamos tratando días después.
- Día 2: Left 4 Dead 2
- Ya conoces el juego, ya sabes lo que hay que hacer. Nos machacaron en nuestro primer intento de Experto, pero le va la marcha. Agradecimientos a la herramienta NucleusCoop por facilitarnos la pantalla dividida.
- Día 2: Windjammers 2
- Puede que ya me hayáis leído hablar de este juego. De hecho, lo probé con mi hermano una semana después y nos divertimos bastante, incluso llegamos a grabar algunas partidas. Entrando en territorio Legendario: Halo Combat Evolved
Halo, al menos en los juegos de Xbox y Xbox 360, fue una franquicia que no sólo se plantó firmemente en el terreno de ser algunos de los mejores juegos de disparos (si no el mejor para algunos) en consolas, sino que también aprovechó al máximo el hecho de ser un juego de consola para ofrecer multijugador a pantalla partida... e incluso multijugador cooperativo.
El hecho de que Halo 1 tuviera un modo cooperativo a pantalla partida para cuatro jugadores no solo es una locura para la época, sino que también es el tipo de cosas que echamos de menos cuando Halo 5 y Halo Infinite eliminaron el modo cooperativo a pantalla partida por alguna razón.
Pero volviendo al juego en cuestión... es un asco que las versiones de PC, tanto la antigua como la de Master Chief Collection, no soporten pantalla dividida incluso si tienes un ordenador potente y suficientes gamepads para ello - aunque recientemente he descubierto un mod que soluciona esto fácilmente.
Mi solución para jugar en modo cooperativo fue NucleusCoop, que no sólo hace magia para abrir varias ventanas del juego y unirlas en pantalla dividida para una experiencia más o menos fluida (más allá de seguir las instrucciones para conectar los juegos), sino que también lo había usado antes para el Halo 2 original en 2021 para una tonta sesión en pantalla dividida.
Sin embargo, cuando lo tienes todo junto, es bastante agradable, e incluso utiliza más espacio real de pantalla que la pantalla dividida oficial puede ofrecer en las consolas, ya que las ventanas ocupan todo el ancho, mientras que los juegos de alguna manera se adapta a eso. Y como NucleusCoop actúa básicamente como dos instancias del juego... mi hermano pudo jugar con los gráficos detallados de Anniversary... mientras yo jugaba con la opción de gráficos clásicos 😂.
Y adaptarnos también tuvimos que conseguirlo nosotros, porque como pude insinuar con el resumen de L4D2, él quería todo en la dificultad...así que jugamos en Legendario.
Sólo un nivel y aún así debimos pasar como media hora entre tomarnos las cosas con calma debido al alto daño de los enemigos, así como esperar a que el otro resurgiera si uno moría... o tener que volver a un punto de control si nos disparaban a los dos a la vez.
El punto álgido fue una sala con escaleras intermedias y élites que atacaban desde una zona alta, en la que moríamos mucho hasta que, en UN intento, conseguí derribar a un élite con una granada de plasma (tuve que volver a intentarlo 3 o 4 veces) y eso fue suficiente para que mi hermano entrara corriendo a ayudarme.
Bastante amenazador, pero muy emocionante de superar. Cuando terminamos el nivel, lo dimos por terminado, pero (al menos el primer día) ocupaba un cómodo tercer puesto en la lista de juegos cooperativos a los que volver. Y será divertido hablar más tarde de lo difícil que fue, aunque equilibrado, el desafío para ambos, a diferencia de... otro juego con una dificultad legendaria.
Pero ese es un juego para el día 2, así que pasemos a los dos juegos que están por encima de él en la lista.
El favorito sorpresa: Kirby y la Tierra Olvidada
Nunca esperé que le gustara tanto tras jugar el primer nivel cooperativo conmigo como para ponerlo ese día en el segundo puesto de su lista, sólo por debajo de un juego en concreto que sí esperaba que le gustara.
No es que no le guste Nintendo, ya que de hecho crecí con él y me gustan seis consolas de Nintendo (N64, GC, Wii, GBA, DS, 3DS), pero supongo que yo diría que podría haber esperado que Left 4 Dead 2 lo destronara por ser acción de lucha de zombis en cooperativo (ya que fue un juego que jugué el día después), y sin embargo no lo hizo.
Así que no estoy del todo seguro de si este alegre juego de Kirby en 3D despertó en él una vieja sensación de haber descubierto un juego superdivertido como cuando era más joven, la novedad de que Kirby estuviera por fin en 3D de una vez por todas, o simplemente lo hicieron los añadidos a la jugabilidad unidos a la profundidad extra de encontrar baratijas y la presentación MUY encantadora (además de yo acompañándole como un bobalicón como Bandana Waddle Dee).

Si había un juego que imaginaba que encajaría con sus gustos y acabaría disfrutando mucho para ser un juego cooperativo, tenía que ser este.
A pesar de la reputación que tiene en la base de fans de Resident Evil debido al comienzo de la desviación en la jugabilidad y el tono que llegó a su punto álgido en Resident Evils 6, definitivamente ofrece algo siempre que se puede jugar en cooperativo como los desarrolladores claramente diseñado ese juego para, que es también lo que hizo que los contrastan más con los juegos antes que ellos.
No obstante, era divertido, ya que era frenético ir de un lado a otro de la desolada ciudad inicial esperando a que pasara algo... y cuando pasaba, acababa siendo justo antes de que nos inundaran de zombis a diestro y siniestro, intentando defendernos de ellos con munición limitada.
En los primeros intentos en los que morimos hasta la última sección en la que se supone que debemos aguantar hasta que nos rescaten, morimos porque nos dividimos mientras intentábamos conseguir cosas diferentes en lugar de permanecer juntos y simplemente huir hasta que el helicóptero viniera a por nosotros.
Por un lado, yo intentaba encontrar un lugar seguro en lo alto... pero los zombis siempre encontraban la forma de alcanzarme y dejarme noqueado, lo que supone un Game Over si estoy abajo demasiado tiempo y mi compañero no puede volver a subirme, lo que ocurría si mi hermano estaba en la zona baja.
Por otro lado, a veces era él quien quedaba atrapado y noqueado porque intentaba luchar contra los zombis y el gran verdugo, sólo para que le pillaran desprevenido mientras yo me peleaba por llegar a donde estaba (y o bien llegaba demasiado tarde o bien me pillaban a mí - si nos derriban a los dos, entonces es un Game Over instantáneo).
Al final, conseguimos sobrevivir y activar la escena que pone fin al nivel... y pudimos ver la divertida cantidad de tiempo que nos llevó el capítulo 1-1, en la dificultad normal en lugar de la dificultad superior en la que él insistió inicialmente.
Hay una posibilidad no nula de que acabemos intentándolo de nuevo pero en la dificultad superior ya que le había dicho que era en Normal, pero esa es una historia para contar otro día. Junto con la de Resident Evil 6.
Sí, fuimos al día siguiente. Pero eso tendrá que esperar al próximo episodio.
¿Qué sigue?
Así que... su lista de preferencia/prioridad para juegos cooperativos ese día terminó como sigue:
- Resident Evil 5
- Kirby Forgotten Land
- Halo
- Super Mario 3D World
- Super Mario Wonder (prioridad baja)
- Quake (no volverá)
Pero tened por seguro que esta lista tendrá mucho más de lo que hablar en la próxima ocasión entre los nuevos juegos que aparecieron y cómo se colocaron en lo que hay aquí... aunque existe la posibilidad de que sea la última actualización, ya que la acumulación de juegos cooperativos probados y por probar después del Día 3 han dejado de añadirse a «la lista» debido a cómo hemos estado intentando llevar la cuenta de qué juegos mantener, qué juegos descartar y qué más juegos probar.
Si conocéis más juegos cooperativos que se puedan jugar en local, hacédmelo saber y puede que acabemos probándolo algún día :)
