Ah, Contra 4. If there's a game that I would have to say that I respect, absolutely admire and enjoy at times, and at the same time completely despise, it would be this game (because I haven't played enough Dark Souls on my life to talk about that). This game was the first of its kind I ever saw on my life, as my brother had it for his Nintendo DS and I remember playing it in Co-op with him some few times, and occasionally taking his cartridge to play on my own and jam to the music in the sound test.
I remember playing it a lot in Easy mode, which was lenient enough with 7 lives, slower bullets and always upgraded weapons, so I could actually get to the end of it...except it always ended in the 7th Stage if you play it on Easy, and the only way to see the last two levels was to get there in Normal. And how hard would that be, you say? After many years and even some few attempts today...I still haven't made it that far. Contra 4 feels like a big tribute to the original games while keeping some of its own flair, and where this shows the most is in how absolutely brutal they made this game.
The only glimpses I had from anything beyond the seventh stage back then (before I was able to look it up on the internet) was either one day I happened to be watching my brother somehow get through the game, or to play a section of the final stage through the Challenge mode, which is unlocked by beating the game once (even in Easy), as there are 40 missions to go through and my brother had completed all of them, so I could take a glimpse (and die) at Harvest Yard anytime I wanted.
Talking about the real deal itself, in Normal mode you have to keep an eye everywhere to avoid a speeding stray bullet from a enemy to hit you (either at plain sight or hiding), with enemies having a middle checkpoint but being tough to survive at, and some savage bosses. It takes a lot of time and practice to find strategies to get through the stages in a relatively easy route, but death by dumb bullet you didn't notice is ALWAYS a looming danger in here, so keep your eyes peeled.
The weapon upgrade system is taken from Operation C, you can also swap between two weapon slots just like in Contra III (with the unused weapon not being lost if you die), stages are reminscent of the original Contra with some of the more unique stages taking cues from the other games (uniquely enough being close to what the arcade games did with the vertical aspect ratio), there are three 3D levels in the style of the first Contra, and the most "throwback" thing of all...your weapon is back to the pea shooter. There's autofire for all weapons, but for most non-upgraded weapons and the default it is slow, so...mashing makes a return! Upgraded weapons do have a much faster fire rate though, and since you start with the pea shooter, the Machine Gun powerup also returned.
Beating challenges unlock new characters from other games, like Lucia from Contra Shattered Soldier, Sheena from Contra Hard Corps, the Contra III characters (named Jimbo and Sully)...and even Probotector from the European versions of Contra games (something that was done due to censoring, but here its a neat bonus...though Contra 4 didn't get released in Europe). They also can unlock the NES Contra and Super C games, which is the way I played those for the first time as well...and also fared terribly at those (I didn't know the Konami Code at that time either).
WayForward really went out above and beyond for this entry, taking its right place as the first straightforward Contra game since the SNES game (Hard Corps being considered a spin-off), providing a smooth game with an infamous level of challenge, just like how people saw Contra and Super C many years ago. Oh, and there is a Hard mode, which plays an awesome remix of the classic Jungle theme...but there are more enemies, faster bullets and you get less lives and continues.
Oh, I had forgot about that, there are limited continues in this game, so if you are aiming to beat this game, best of luck, you'll need to have some nerves of steel and a lottery-winning luck to even beat this in Normal, let alone in Hard. There are two Konami Codes though: The classic button combo upgrades your weapons instead of giving lives (but using it again after using it succesfully will kill you), and there's a 30 life-granting code that uses the touch-screen...but unlike the old games, you won't get those extra lives again after losing a continue, so even if you use the code, you will still have to do your absolute best to survive.

Hablando del juego en sí, en el modo Normal tienes que estar atento a todas partes para evitar que una bala perdida a toda velocidad de un enemigo te alcance (ya sea a la vista o escondida), con enemigos que tienen un punto de control medio pero al que es difícil sobrevivir, y algunos jefes salvajes. Se necesita mucho tiempo y práctica para encontrar estrategias para superar las fases en un recorrido relativamente fácil, pero la muerte por una bala tonta que no has notado es SIEMPRE un peligro inminente aquí, así que mantén los ojos bien abiertos.
