Some of you might already know how much I've had a thing for arcade racing games, and that was mostly thanks to SEGA's offerings like SEGA Rally Championship, OutRun, and most notably, Daytona USA; specifically its sequel that I got to play as a kid on the arcade for the first time, which led me to looking up about games like it on the internet. That said, one of the games I stumbled upon was "Daytona USA Deluxe", a PC version of the original Daytona that added some new tracks, improved visuals and an arranged soundtrack; that sounded amazing to me and I ended up getting it alongside the original PC version that was out there too.
If you thought that the arcade Daytona USA was talking about obscure racers, then these ports are basically non-existent today...in more ways than one. See, the two PC versions of Daytona were both based on SEGA Saturn rereleases: The first one was the unfortunately unpolished version that tried to replicate the original game but ran at 20fps and with poor draw distance (which REALLY paled in comparison to Ridge Racer on the PS1 at release), but I still had a soft spot for it because of the colors, the boxy car, and how the handling was actually very well adapted to a keyboard or gamepad. But upsides or downsides aside, the game only had the original 3 tracks and soundtrack based off it, though adding some extra cars for fun.
But Daytona USA Deluxe was based off the second re-release, and that one was much more of an oddball than you could expect...
From what I've heard, the original Championship Circuit Edition for Saturn had heavy handling and drifting unlike the original, a further remixed soundtrack, textures that looked to be more "realistic" with less colors, and basically tried to adapt the original into something that worked better on the hardware with creative liberties rather than trying to match the artistic intent from the arcade game. The bonus was that it also included more cars with different handling stats, and two new tracks to drive on...but it certainly was a bit of a stranger deal than the first port. There was an improved "Circuit Edition" that allowed tuning a bit the car handling, change the time of day, and seemingly changed the handling to resemble more the original game...and while I never played CCE to confirm this myself, I've always had the hunch that it probably was true but the changes were only done to the main Hornet car, as the Gallop car with identical stats to it does handle different (and I suspect that the Hornet used to drive like it in CCE before getting adjusted).
...In any case, with the history class done, Daytona USA Deluxe is a PC port based off Circuit Edition...which is an improved Championship Circuit Edition...which was the Saturn's second attempt at porting the game. Being a Windows game offered benefits like a higher resolution and quick loading times, but nowadays due to the age of the game its a bit difficult to get running right on a modern computer (a topic that I'll get to later). In content, it is ALMOST identical to Circuit Edition, but offered two big new things: Network Multiplayer over LAN to play with up to 8 players, and a brand new track designed for this version of the game, one that did NOT return in the Dreamcast port of Daytona unlike the two CCE tracks.
Honestly I had a lot of fond memories from this game, mostly from driving with the Max car due to the high handling stat and even being able to drive off-road for some reason, but coming to appreciate the other cars and drifting like intended after growing up and getting used to games like this. Content-wise, even though it does offer a bit more than the other versions (as well as an unlockable souped-up car that uses the model of the original Hornet from the first Saturn game...and TWO horses), it still obviously won't have THAT much to do as it is an arcade racer port with extra content. But I'd say its impressive how the drifting does match up well to the idea of having to find the right angle and moment to start it to get over the turn in the best way, that same feeling that the arcade game and even the first Saturn version gave you when learned (in contrast to Ridge Racer which has sort of drifts on rails; not that I like it less because of it but its a different feeling).
And how was I able to play this again? Well...I've had my share of stories messing around with old games like these (as I had mentioned before, I did get my hands on these old games on a Windows 7 PC over 10 years ago), and while figuring out all the quirks with compatibility in Windows 10 almost became a nightmare from strange errors here and there, I did figure out how to get it running on my current PC pretty well. I did write down all the stuff I figured out for that in a guide I made two months ago, though I definitely was in the mood there to talking about the technical details more than anything...but at least its a comprehensive enough amount of information to convey the hoops I had to go, and that someone else would have to go to get that going. Oh, and there's the biggest one too: As with many arcade racers never getting a port, many of these old PC games and ports I tried were stuck as never officially re-released abandonware, so finding about where to get this game is another can of worms.
But putting all that aside, it was interesting to talk about this game here, as its definitely an unique case from most stuff that's probably seen here from my side, yet it is an honest outlook on what I really was into as a kid, and to a degree I'm still interested in today. A different port as an old PC game of an arcade racer...yeah, it might feel lonely to think that I'm probably one of the few that would be involved in a phrase as specific like that, but writing this made me realize how cool it is that I can share this kind of stuff to more people at all :)

Algunos de vosotros ya sabéis lo mucho que me gustan los juegos de carreras arcade, y eso fue sobre todo gracias a las ofertas de SEGA como SEGA Rally Championship, OutRun y, sobre todo, Daytona USA; en concreto, su secuela, a la que pude jugar de niño en la recreativa por primera vez, lo que me llevó a buscar sobre juegos similares en Internet. Por lo que he oído, la Championship Circuit Edition original para Saturn tenía un manejo y un derrape muy intensos, a diferencia del original, una banda sonora más remezclada, texturas que parecían más "realistas" con menos colores y, básicamente, intentaba adaptar el original a algo que funcionara mejor en el hardware con libertades creativas en lugar de intentar igualar la intención artística del juego de arcade. La ventaja era que también incluía más coches con diferentes características de manejo, y dos nuevas pistas para conducir... pero ciertamente era un trato un poco más extraño que el primer puerto. Había una "Circuit Edition" mejorada que permitía afinar un poco el manejo del coche, cambiar la hora del día, y aparentemente cambiaba el manejo para parecerse más al juego original... y aunque nunca jugué a CCE para confirmarlo yo mismo, siempre he tenido la corazonada de que probablemente era cierto pero los cambios sólo se hicieron en el coche principal Hornet, ya que el coche Gallop con estadísticas idénticas a éste se maneja diferente (y sospecho que el Hornet se manejaba así en CCE antes de ser ajustado).
...En cualquier caso, con la clase de historia hecha, Daytona USA Deluxe es un port de PC basado en la Circuit Edition... que es una Championship Circuit Edition mejorada... que fue el segundo intento de Saturn de portar el juego. El hecho de ser un juego para Windows ofrecía ventajas como una mayor resolución y tiempos de carga rápidos, pero hoy en día, debido a la antigüedad del juego, es un poco difícil de conseguir que funcione bien en un ordenador moderno (un tema que trataré más adelante). En cuanto al contenido, es CASI idéntico al de la Circuit Edition, pero ofrece dos grandes novedades Multijugador en red a través de LAN para jugar con hasta 8 jugadores, y una pista completamente nueva diseñada para esta versión del juego, una que NO volvió en el puerto de Dreamcast de Daytona a diferencia de las dos pistas de CCE.
Sinceramente, tengo muy buenos recuerdos de este juego, sobre todo por haber conducido con el coche Max debido a su alta manejabilidad e incluso por haber podido conducir fuera de la carretera por alguna razón, pero llegando a apreciar los otros coches y el drifting como se pretende después de crecer y acostumbrarse a juegos como este. En cuanto al contenido, aunque ofrece un poco más que las otras versiones (así como un coche desbloqueable mejorado que utiliza el modelo del Hornet original del primer juego de Saturn... y DOS caballos), obviamente no tendrá tanto que hacer, ya que se trata de un juego de carreras arcade con contenido extra. Pero diría que es impresionante cómo el drifting se ajusta a la idea de tener que encontrar el ángulo y el momento adecuado para arrancar para superar la curva de la mejor manera, esa misma sensación que el juego de arcade e incluso la primera versión de Saturn te daban al aprender (en contraste con Ridge Racer que tiene una especie de drifting sobre raíles; no es que me guste menos por ello pero es una sensación diferente).
¿Y cómo he podido volver a jugar a esto? Bueno... he tenido mi cuota de historias jugando con juegos antiguos como estos (como había mencionado antes, tuve en mis manos estos viejos juegos en un PC con Windows 7 hace más de 10 años), y mientras que averiguar todas las peculiaridades con la compatibilidad en Windows 10 casi se convirtió en una pesadilla de errores extraños aquí y allá, me di cuenta de cómo conseguir que se ejecuta en mi PC actual bastante bien. Escribí todas las cosas que descubrí para eso en una guía que hice hace dos meses, aunque definitivamente estaba de humor para hablar de los detalles técnicos más que nada... pero al menos es una cantidad de información lo suficientemente completa como para transmitir los aros que tuve que ir, y que alguien más tendría que ir para conseguirlo. Ah, y también está el más grande: Al igual que con muchos juegos de carreras arcade que nunca llegaron a ser portados, muchos de estos viejos juegos de PC y los ports que probé estaban atascados como abandonware nunca reeditado oficialmente, por lo que encontrar dónde conseguir este juego es otra lata de gusanos.
Pero dejando todo eso de lado, fue interesante hablar de este juego aquí, ya que es definitivamente un caso único de la mayoría de las cosas que probablemente se ven aquí de mi lado, sin embargo, es una perspectiva honesta de lo que realmente estaba en cuando era un niño, y en un grado que todavía estoy interesado en la actualidad. Un puerto diferente como un viejo juego de PC de un corredor de arcade ... sí, puede sentirse solo a pensar que soy probablemente uno de los pocos que estaría involucrado en una frase tan específica como esa, pero escribir esto me hizo darme cuenta de lo genial que es que puedo compartir este tipo de cosas a más personas en absoluto :)
