Rhythm games have been around since the existence of arcade games in the 90s as a fun diversion from the usual genres and usage of inconventional input methods like with the eponymous Dance Dance Revolution franchise, which featured a 4-button pad on the floor that you had to step on in order to hit the arrows that came up; often synced with the song beats.
The rise of the internet and personal computers also allowed people to make and share their own games; original ideas, emulators for older consoles, and even clones of existing popular games. The idea of rhythm game clones would be rightfully appealing from being avaliable at your PC and the possibility of adding any songs avaliable, or even making your own.
Despite that games like DDR, Beatmania and Taiko no Tatsujin on arcades had a specific setup intended (A mat for DDR, a 7 button pad with a turntable for Beatmania, and a huge drum for Taiko), this wouldn't stop the concept from being worked on by others and would sort of still make sense as console ports of these games would happen often even without a peripheral.
However, one of the most unique free rhythm games which also gained a massive amount of popularity over the last years has an even weirder origin: A sort of obscure fact about this one game today is that the idea comes from a game called Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan for the Nintendo DS; the idea of clicking the circles to the beat being there but with the input method being...the DS touch screen!

As someone that had the chance to play the three Ouendan games on a 3DS before (one of these is Elite Beat Agents, the only one localized internationally and probably the most familiar one), it is pretty fun and ingenious how all you have to do is right on your face, with only your stylus reactions and rhythm sense being in the way in the harder difficulties. It was clearly designed to be played with the touchscreen.
But this is where it gets interesting: As you might be already familiar with osu!, it is a PC game (with unofficial Android ports) that people play with a mouse or a drawing tablet...and then you would think that translating the touch screen gameplay to that would actually be cumbersome, but instead gives the game an unique flair from its portable predecessor and makes maps have a different playstyle intended for this setup.
JAM Project - THE HERO!!
The basic premise is that you move the cursor with your mouse or drawing tablet and click the circles with the mouse or using the keyboard; using the keys with your left (or right hand) to click and keeping the mouse/tablet hand exclusively for aiming is the most effective style as you can keep your aim steady instead of pushing that same hand with clicking to the beat, something that is much more apparent as you start diving deeper in the game.
The fact that a game idea like this actually translated well to playing on a computer is incredible, but it is also thanks to the developer efforts into providing enough customization and adjustment options along with every osu! song mapper; just like with Stepmania/Etterna, the strength of osu! lies in how it has a virtually infinite amount of songs to play that are made in mind with the new control scheme.
This is one key difference that shows between the original DS experience and playing osu! just like how the experience changes between playing original DDR maps and Etterna/Stepmania maps: Not only maps make you feel a flow between you, your cursor and the song beats as you follow the circles, but also there's a fair amount of balance and difficulty ramping between ranked maps.
Starting with the easy/normal difficulty with your favorite songs is a great way to get accostumed to playing, and as you keep practicing with different songs, you eventually start playing the Hard maps in order to complete them, until that at one point you are now trying for the difficulty after that as you can now complete the Hard maps easily. But make no mistake, most maps have at least 4-5 difficulties with the last one needing you to be at your best...and that's not saying anything about the maps that go beyond that.
Since osu! doesn't have a set difficulty naming, most maps can have a particular name for each difficulty that has an adjective or flair reminscent of the map or simply have a Easy to Insane difficulty names. However, there's a star count on each beatmap that shows the game's calculation for difficulty, which while can give you an idea about how much it does have, it still doesn't account for another thing related to maps.
As mentioned before, practically every song is mapped by the many users of the community, which means that both the style and flow of the map when you play it, as well as the approach on rhythm behind clicking the circles and the gimmicks that can make the map challenging can vary a lot. This is noticeable with maps with difficulties that might have the same Hard/Insane/etc label but prefixed with a different username, as the beatmap was made by a different player and thus can have a different approach for the same intended difficulty.
While this comes from someone that isn't an expert on osu! like many known players out there, as well as how this is pretty much what I perceived without any other research (since at the time of redacting this, I didn't have internet avaliable), some of the difficulty gimmicks you can spot in maps are the following:
⦁ The most basic one that was also present in Ouendan is the Spin, which you only need to spin around the circle as fast as you can until you "clear" it. Spinning it further after clearing it gives you extra points, and is pretty much a simple way to fill in certain transitions or end stretches.
LAST ALLIANCE - HEKIREKI
⦁ Stacked circles are theoretically simple in that they are just circles on top of each other, but on practice you need to get accostumed to both reacting to these fast enough and having caught a rhythm in order to know the beat you have to click these at.
⦁ Streams (which I think they were called; I'll call em streams for now since I don't have a way to double check) are similar to stacked circles in that you have to click at a steady set beat but they go around in a path instead of being on top of each other. In fast/hard maps, these need you to have enough concentration for getting the beat down AND following the circle path without fail.
Coda - Bloody Stream
⦁ Jumps are circles that...jump from long distances from one side to another, which means that you have to make a quick travel with your hand to catch it on time but making sure you both don't overshoot it and that you click it on the beat. On easy maps this can be simple to understand but with faster maps you have to be both fast and precise enough to hit the note from a jump, and there can be many jumps in a row.
⦁ The hardest gimmick in my opinion to deal with are "stars", which are pretty much jumps that might not have much travel (at least when not playing on the hardest difficulties) but most of the time come at a sort of star-shaped path, making you go against the flow of your hand instead of following it and having to abruptly change direction. This along with fast maps and difficulties where more precision is required and the chance of more stars can make or break a run for you depending of your skill.
Linked Horizon - Shinzou wo Sasageyo
The game provides you a way to calibrate the sound to assure that the game is properly synced to the beats, as well as enabling raw mouse input and increase or decrease your sensitivity. Increasing the sensitivity can help you move quicker without moving your hand as much and clear jumps easier, but it makes precision much harder as you have to be even more precise with smaller hand movements. On the flipside, less sentivity needs your hand to travel even more than usual but technically someone trained with less sensitivity can be more precise with where they move their mouse spatially.
Personally as someone that had got back to the game in last October, I'd recommend to play with the defaults (with or without raw mouse input, but I would recommend getting used to raw mouse input) and if having trouble with jumps on a map, try increasing the sensitivity so that you can get a sense about the jumps.
After practicing enough on the map so that you can clear it some few times, set the sensitivity back to default and try to get used to that again. You should still remember the map's flow but having to adjust your hand movement to the default sensitivity. Doing so would actually help you get even better with the default sensitivity and being more precise as you would be able to practice enough to clear the map but with the usual setting instead of overcompensating for lack of speed.
That said, that's all my personal thoughts/experience and you can just instead approach the game and improving however you want, and that's not accounting with how most expert players actually play with a drawing tablet instead of a mouse as it lets your hand be even more precise with a lighter hand as you hold a pen.
However, make sure that you try to find any songs that you like with beatmaps (or searching for recommended ones) and starting from scratch until you eventually feel confident enough to start practicing the next difficulty. Sounds redundant but its all through practice that you can keep improving, and if you feel stuck with a certain song/map, try approaching a different song on the same difficulty instead.

And finally, osu! actually comes with other game modes: osu!mania (based on beatmania IIDX, though can be compared to Stepmania/Etterna), taiko (based on Taiko no Tatsujin, a franchise which deserves its own post) and Catch the Fruit, which is a easy to learn but hard to master idea in that you have to catch falling fruit just by moving left and right with a character (along with a boost key).

Los juegos de ritmo han existido desde la existencia de los juegos de arcade en los años 90 como una divertida diversión de los géneros habituales y el uso de métodos de entrada inconvencionales como con la franquicia epónima Dance Dance Revolution, que contaba con una almohadilla de 4 botones en el suelo que tenías que pisar para golpear las flechas que aparecían, a menudo sincronizadas con los ritmos de las canciones.
El auge de Internet y los ordenadores personales también permitió a la gente crear y compartir sus propios juegos; ideas originales, emuladores para consolas antiguas e incluso clones de juegos populares ya existentes. La idea de los clones de juegos de ritmo sería justamente atractiva por estar disponibles en tu PC y por la posibilidad de añadir cualquier canción disponible, o incluso crear la tuya propia.
A pesar de que juegos como DDR, Beatmania y Taiko no Tatsujin en los salones recreativos tenían una configuración específica (una alfombrilla para DDR, una almohadilla de 7 botones con un plato giratorio para Beatmania, y un enorme tambor para Taiko), esto no impediría que otros trabajaran en el concepto y seguiría teniendo sentido, ya que los ports de estos juegos a las consolas se harían a menudo incluso sin un periférico.

Como alguien que ya ha tenido la oportunidad de jugar a los tres juegos de Ouendan en una 3DS (uno de ellos es Elite Beat Agents, el único localizado internacionalmente y probablemente el más conocido), es bastante divertido e ingenioso el hecho de que todo lo que tienes que hacer es justo en tu cara, con sólo las reacciones de tu stylus y el sentido del ritmo en las dificultades más difíciles. Está claro que fue diseñado para ser jugado con la pantalla táctil.
Pero aquí es donde la cosa se pone interesante: Como puede que ya estés familiarizado con osu!, es un juego de PC (con ports no oficiales para Android) al que la gente juega con un ratón o una tableta de dibujo... y entonces pensarías que trasladar la jugabilidad de la pantalla táctil a eso sería realmente engorroso, pero en cambio le da al juego un toque único respecto a su predecesor portátil y hace que los mapas tengan un estilo de juego diferente pensado para esta configuración.

La premisa básica es que mueves el cursor con el ratón o la tableta de dibujo y haces clic en los círculos con el ratón o usando el teclado; usar las teclas con la mano izquierda (o derecha) para hacer clic y mantener la mano del ratón/tableta exclusivamente para apuntar es el estilo más efectivo, ya que puedes mantener tu puntería firme en lugar de empujar esa misma mano con los clics al compás, algo que es mucho más evidente a medida que empiezas a adentrarte en el juego.
El hecho de que una idea de juego como esta se haya trasladado bien a jugar en un ordenador es increíble, pero también es gracias a los esfuerzos del desarrollador por ofrecer suficientes opciones de personalización y ajuste junto con cada mapeador de canciones de osu!; al igual que con Stepmania/Etterna, el punto fuerte de osu! reside en que tiene una cantidad prácticamente infinita de canciones para jugar que están hechas pensando en el nuevo esquema de control.
Esta es una diferencia clave que se muestra entre la experiencia original de DS y jugar a osu! al igual que la experiencia cambia entre jugar a los mapas originales de DDR y los mapas de Etterna/Stepmania: No solo los mapas hacen que sientas un flujo entre tú, tu cursor y los ritmos de la canción mientras sigues los círculos, sino que también hay una buena cantidad de equilibrio y ramificación de la dificultad entre los mapas clasificados.
Empezar con la dificultad fácil/normal con tus canciones favoritas es una gran manera de acostumbrarse a jugar, y a medida que sigues practicando con diferentes canciones, eventualmente empiezas a jugar los mapas difíciles para completarlos, hasta que en un momento dado estás intentando la dificultad posterior ya que ahora puedes completar los mapas difíciles fácilmente. Pero no te equivoques, la mayoría de los mapas tienen al menos 4-5 dificultades con la última necesitando que estés al máximo... y eso no es decir nada de los mapas que van más allá.
Dado que osu! no tiene una nomenclatura de dificultad establecida, la mayoría de los mapas pueden tener un nombre particular para cada dificultad que tenga un adjetivo o toque que recuerde al mapa o simplemente tener un nombre de dificultad Fácil a Demencial. Sin embargo, hay un recuento de estrellas en cada beatmap que muestra el cálculo del juego para la dificultad, que si bien puede darte una idea de cuánto tiene, todavía no tiene en cuenta otra cosa relacionada con los mapas.
Como se ha mencionado antes, prácticamente todas las canciones son mapeadas por los numerosos usuarios de la comunidad, lo que significa que tanto el estilo y la fluidez del mapa cuando lo juegas, como el enfoque sobre el ritmo que hay detrás de hacer clic en los círculos y los trucos que pueden hacer que el mapa sea un reto pueden variar mucho. Esto se nota en los mapas con dificultades que pueden tener la misma etiqueta de Difícil/Insano/etc. pero con un nombre de usuario diferente, ya que el beatmap fue hecho por un jugador diferente y por lo tanto puede tener un enfoque diferente para la misma dificultad prevista.
Si bien esto viene de alguien que no es un experto en osu! como muchos jugadores conocidos por ahí, así como la forma en que esto es más o menos lo que percibí sin ninguna otra investigación (ya que en el momento de redactar esto, no tenía internet disponible), algunos de los trucos de dificultad que se puede detectar en los mapas son los siguientes:
⦁ El más básico y que también estaba presente en Ouendan es el Giro, con el que sólo tienes que girar alrededor del círculo tan rápido como puedas hasta "despejarlo". Hacerlo girar más después de despejarlo te da puntos extra, y es más o menos una forma sencilla de rellenar ciertas transiciones o tramos finales.
LAST ALLIANCE - HEKIREKI
⦁ Los círculos apilados son teóricamente sencillos en el sentido de que no son más que círculos superpuestos, pero en la práctica tienes que acostumbrarte tanto a reaccionar a ellos con la suficiente rapidez como a haber cogido el ritmo para saber en qué momento tienes que pulsarlos.
⦁ Las corrientes (que creo que se llaman así; por ahora las llamaré corrientes porque no tengo forma de comprobarlo) son similares a los círculos apilados en el sentido de que tienes que hacer clic en un ritmo fijo, pero van por un camino en lugar de estar uno encima del otro. En los mapas rápidos/difíciles, estos necesitan que tengas la suficiente concentración para conseguir el ritmo y seguir la trayectoria del círculo sin fallar.
Coda - Bloody Stream
⦁ Los saltos son círculos que... saltan desde largas distancias de un lado a otro, lo que significa que tienes que hacer un recorrido rápido con la mano para cogerlo a tiempo pero asegurándote tanto de no sobrepasarlo como de pulsarlo en el compás. En los mapas fáciles esto puede ser sencillo de entender, pero con los mapas más rápidos tienes que ser a la vez rápido y preciso para acertar con la nota de un salto, y puede haber muchos saltos seguidos.
⦁ El truco más difícil en mi opinión de tratar son las "estrellas", que son más o menos saltos que pueden no tener mucho recorrido (al menos cuando no se juega en las dificultades más difíciles) pero que la mayoría de las veces vienen en una especie de camino en forma de estrella, lo que te hace ir en contra de la corriente de tu mano en lugar de seguirla y tener que cambiar abruptamente de dirección. Esto, junto con los mapas rápidos y las dificultades en las que se requiere más precisión y la posibilidad de que sean utilizadas más estrellas, puede hacer que tu partida sea un éxito o un fracaso, dependiendo de tu habilidad.

El juego te ofrece una forma de calibrar el sonido para asegurar que el juego está correctamente sincronizado con los ritmos, así como habilitar la entrada bruta del ratón y aumentar o disminuir su sensibilidad. Personalmente, como alguien que ha vuelto al juego en octubre pasado, recomendaría jugar con los valores predeterminados (con o sin entrada bruta del ratón, pero recomendaría acostumbrarse a la entrada bruta del ratón) y si tiene problemas con los saltos en un mapa, intente aumentar la sensibilidad para que pueda tener una idea sobre los saltos.
Después de practicar lo suficiente en el mapa para que puedas despejarlo algunas veces, pon la sensibilidad de nuevo en el valor predeterminado y trata de acostumbrarte a eso de nuevo. Deberías seguir recordando el flujo del mapa pero teniendo que ajustar el movimiento de tu mano a la sensibilidad por defecto. Hacer esto te ayudaría a mejorar aún más con la sensibilidad por defecto y a ser más preciso ya que podrías practicar lo suficiente como para despejar el mapa pero con la configuración habitual en lugar de sobrecompensar la falta de velocidad.
Dicho esto, esto es todo mi pensamiento/experiencia personal y en su lugar puedes acercarte al juego y mejorar como quieras, y eso no es contable con la forma en que la mayoría de los jugadores expertos juegan en realidad con una tableta de dibujo en lugar de un ratón, ya que permite que tu mano sea aún más precisa con una mano más ligera al sostener un bolígrafo.
Sin embargo, asegúrate de encontrar canciones que te gusten con beatmaps (o buscando las recomendadas) y empezar desde cero hasta que finalmente te sientas lo suficientemente seguro como para empezar a practicar la siguiente dificultad. Suena redundante, pero es a través de la práctica que puedes seguir mejorando, y si te sientes atascado con una determinada canción/mapa, intenta acercarte a una canción diferente en la misma dificultad.

Y por último, osu! viene con otros modos de juego: osu!mania (basado en beatmania IIDX, aunque puede compararse con Stepmania/Etterna), taiko (basado en Taiko no Tatsujin, una franquicia que merece su propio post) y Atrapa la fruta, que es una idea fácil de aprender pero difícil de dominar en la que tienes que atrapar las frutas que caen simplemente moviéndote a izquierda y derecha con un personaje (junto con una tecla de impulso).
