The Nintendo 64 always had quite the reputation for being one of the first greatest multiplayer consoles not only because of the four controller ports included (while the Super Nintendo and the Playstation, predecessor and competitor, needed multitaps), but also because of the amount of games that took advantage of this feature. Super Smash Bros would be one of those flagship N64 titles that were perfect to bring your friends and instantly cut to the smashing action.
While it is way less mechanically advanced than its sequels (notably, there is no "Side B" attack, up-throw, airdodging and charged smash attacks), it still feels familiar yet simpler to grasp with the few limitations present. Smash 64 is particularly floaty with the physics and hitstun is much higher than in other games , which makes combos easier to do (and potentially longer than in other games).
The 1P Mode (which would be renamed "Classic" in future games) gets you through a set of battles, sometimes with special conditions (like fighting against a team of Yoshis and Kirbys, a giant Donkey Kong), with the option of 5 difficulties and damage scaling changing depending of it (this means that it is really easy to get knocked out from few hits in Very Hard, so watch out). You can get bonuses at the end of a stage depending of certain conditions you achieve.
You also get to play on two bonus stages: Break the Targets and Board the Platforms (both of which can be played outside of 1P Mode as well). BTT is a well-known one since it appeared in Melee and Brawl, but characters only had unique stages for this minigame here and in Melee. Board the Platforms has you getting on top of all the platforms in unique stages as well, but it was never brought back in future games.
Near the end, you have to face off against Metal Mario (which is an unique character here as the Metal Box item doesn't exist here), the Fighting Polygon Team (30 weak mooks; this would be the basis for the Multi Man Smash modes), and finally, Master Hand itself, a giant hand which you have to beat by depleting its health.
Despite the roster being quite small here (8 default characters plus 4 unlockables), there is still a lot of fun to have with the single player modes and unlocks, as well as having friends to come over and enjoy in multiplayer. Even when the sequels have polished further the formula since then, this game still holds a lot of fun and replayability.

La Nintendo 64 siempre ha tenido fama de ser una de las primeras consolas con mayor capacidad multijugador, no sólo por los cuatro puertos de mando que incluía (mientras que la Super Nintendo y la Playstation, predecesora y competidora, necesitaban multitapas), sino también por la cantidad de juegos que aprovechaban esta característica. Super Smash Bros sería uno de esos títulos emblemáticos de N64 que eran perfectos para llevar a tus amigos y pasar al instante a la acción de los golpes.
Aunque su mecánica es mucho menos avanzada que la de sus secuelas (en particular, no existe el ataque "Lado B", el lanzamiento hacia arriba, la caída en el aire y los ataques smash cargados), sigue resultando familiar y a la vez más sencillo de entender con las pocas limitaciones presentes. Smash 64 es particularmente flotante con la física y el hitstun es mucho más alto que en otros juegos , lo que hace que los combos sean más fáciles de hacer (y potencialmente más largos que en otros juegos).
El modo 1P (que pasaría a llamarse "Clásico" en futuros juegos) te lleva a través de un conjunto de batallas, a veces con condiciones especiales (como luchar contra un equipo de Yoshis y Kirbys, un Donkey Kong gigante), con la opción de 5 dificultades y la escala de daño que cambia en función de la misma (esto significa que es realmente fácil quedar fuera de combate por pocos golpes en Muy Difícil, así que ten cuidado). Puedes obtener bonificaciones al final de una fase dependiendo de ciertas condiciones que consigas.
También puedes jugar en dos fases de bonificación: Romper los objetivos y Abordar las plataformas (ambas se pueden jugar también fuera del modo 1P). BTT es muy conocido, ya que apareció en Melee y Brawl, pero los personajes solo tenían escenarios únicos para este minijuego aquí y en Melee. Board the Platforms hace que te subas a todas las plataformas en fases únicas también, pero nunca se recuperó en futuros juegos.
Cerca del final, tienes que enfrentarte a Mario de metal (que aquí es un personaje único, ya que el objeto Caja de metal no existe aquí), al Equipo Polígono de Lucha (30 mooks débiles; esta sería la base de los modos Smash Multihombre) y, por último, a la propia Mano Maestra, una mano gigante a la que tienes que derrotar agotando su salud.
A pesar de que el plantel es bastante reducido en este caso (8 personajes por defecto más 4 desbloqueables), sigue habiendo mucha diversión con los modos para un solo jugador y los desbloqueos, así como con los amigos para disfrutar en el multijugador. Incluso cuando las secuelas han pulido más la fórmula desde entonces, este juego sigue siendo muy divertido y rejugable.
