Okay, this one is probably one of the most well-known (and most loved) games of all time which might not need any introduction...which is why exactly I feel really compelled to talk about this game. Not only because of the incredible success it found on its intended scope and beyond it, but also as it was an absolute favorite for my brothers and me during my childhood, as I always went for Dr. Mario and Jigglypuff against Marth and Roy for one of my brothers, and Fox and Link for the other one.
The amount of effort and care that was pushed by Masahiro Sakurai (the main producer behind this franchise as well as Kirby and some few others) really shows on the epic presentation, nostalgic references and trophies, and the very polished gameplay that would ironically lead to a dedicated fanbase taking it beyond from the intended party game into an impressively competitive yet unorthodox fighting game...
But as I'm a small fish in what would be that world (specially online) as well as taking on the meaning that Sakurai thought at every moment of this game development, I will talk about all the impressive scenes, the superb melodies and the smashing moments of fun and challenge that comprise this one game called Super Smash Brothers Melee.
First of all I want to talk about the 1P Modes, which are one of the biggest highlights in Melee. To be honest there is so much to unpack here right from this menu so I will talk about each thing you can find at this section.
- Regular Match has three modes (but the third one is unlockable): Classic, Adventure and All-Star.
- Event Match is pretty much a Mission mode with specific match setups and sometimes set characters.
- Stadium is the "minigame"-esque section where you get Break the Targets, Home Run Contest and Multi-Man Melee.
- Training is, of course, the mandatory Training mode where you can spawn items and even change the speed of the game during the time you use it.
Classic mode is structured in several battles, sometimes being 2 vs 2, 3 vs 1 giant enemy, or you against an entire team of enemies (which to compensate, are much easier to send flying away).
Between these fights, there are some sort of minigames: Break the Targets (which I will get into more detail later on), Snag the Trophies (where you have to hit falling trophies into a bowl to get them; I will also explain Trophies soon enough), and Race to the Finish, where you have to get as far as you can under one minute. And I say "as far as you can" since these levels actually leave you more than a single exit for you to get, but these would give you less points/coins than getting to a farther distance or the end of the stage.
At the end you have to face Master Hand, a giant disembodied hand that can shoot lasers and missiles as well as outright punching and slamming against you. You might get a surprise here if you're playing on Hard or Very Hard :)
The end credits (here as well as in the other Regular Match modes) would play your character's theme as you fly through space, with the name of the staff that developed the game passing by and having a crosshair to shoot lasers at them. This credits screen is pretty much sort of a shooting minigame, but the way it looks to how the song of your character of choice makes it feel good.
And with that done, we can move on to the next- WAIT WHAT IS THAT?!?
Oh hey, its just my good old buddy Dr. Mario! What's that, he doesn't want to come with us? No problem, just a good old fight and he'll be joining us!
Taking this chance to mention how I was playing from a fresh save file, so I didn't have anything unlocked...and the feeling from unlocking thing was quite a fun feeling to get back again. And on the note of what actually happened, unlocking characters can happen from clearing a certain mode normally, to doing so under certain conditions...to even more cryptical things, like having 20 hours of VS matches logged...and the fastest shortcut for that is to spend at least 5 hours of VS matches with 4 human players.
Or well, at least that the first step. As you saw above, when you get a "Challenger Approaching", you have to face off against the character in question, and beating them is what gives you the coveted unlock.
Anyways, now on to Adventure mode! This is a particularly interesting one as instead of randomized matches, you go through a couple of stages; some are set matches but others have you to play through a platforming stage before!
Going through the Mushroom Kingdom to fight Mario and Peach, going through the Underground Maze to find the Triforce in one of the several rooms that are there to then fight Zelda, going to Brinstar and fighting Samus- oh no...
You better hurry up your slow feet or else gonna blow up with the planet! (And what's more, this is all a nod to Super Metroid in which there are escape sequences like this where you have to run straight for the surface before an explosion)
And after that you go through some few more stages and- oh nice, F-Zero! Wait, hold the phone- okay looks like I have 1000km/h machines going straight for my head and I have to run for my life...luckily there are some few pink platforms above the road to avoid certain death!
With that done and some couple more of stages dealt with, we get to the Final Destination with a epic battle against Bowser which we easily manage, as his defeat shows his trophy falling into the black void and- WAIT WHAT IS IT NOW

Oh dear.
If you were playing on Normal or higher (and didn't take too long to get to Bowser), Giga Bowser is the last hurdle waiting for you at the end of the Adventure. While it has a HUGE size meaning that it can be a bigger target, it means that his fists are also huge and can easily send you away. But if you manage to beat this mammoth-sized turtle once more...
Right where you belong.
And with that, aside from some things I didn't mention (or that can change depending of certain characters being unlocked or not), we can call Adventure mode a wrap- oh hold on, a new character is knocking on the door.
Alright, now we can move on to the rest of the single player modes! So Event Match does provide several missions as I had mentioned previously, starting with only 10 events until you keep unlocking characters, ending with 51 events. And if the All-Star events leave you itching for more, just wait until you get all the characters; as the All-Star mode where you face with every character in a Survival-style challenge awaits you.
And now we can get to the Stadium modes! The first one is Break the Targets, a small challenge where you have to hit all the targets on a specifically crafted stage for each character (something that is sadly reduced to shared stages in Brawl and removed on later games). While in Classic mode this is under a lenient time limit, you can access these challenges anytime on this mode and try to get the lowest time possible!
Home Run Contest is a fun challenge in that you 10 seconds to rack up damage on a sandbag and then send it as far as you can, with a Home-Run Bat conveniently placed nearby you (as this item lets you hit VERY hard). Be careful to not knock over the sandbag outside of the area by accident before you can make the big homerun!
Multi-Man Melee is another survival-like trial except that you get swarmed with up to 5 enemies at a time (and normally you can only fight up to 3 other players), ranging from having to beat 10 and 100 enemies, to surviving 3 and 15 minutes of fighting against an endless swarm...or deciding to just fight endlessly until you get knocked out. The most challenging mode is Cruel Melee, which is indeed cruel as the enemies are given a lot of resistance and you on the other hand can be almost instantly knocked out by any of their attacks.
And with this we can finally go on the probably most familiar aspect of the game: The aptly-titled VS. Mode where all the multiplayer fun awaited. From standard matches with configurable rules (stock amount, time, knockback, teams) to more crazy modes in Special Melee, there was sure many ways to play which would be clearly helped by the game itself.
And what can I say about the gameplay that isn't known already? On top of being able to play with lives, whoever can get the highest KO count under a time limit, or even smashing the coins out of others, the gameplay is just incredibly solid. With the known intuitive controls for beginners that are part of every Smash game, along with the dynamic feeling that the game gives with the snappy controls and smooth speed, it might feel a bit more punishing than expected but the risk and reward in play here means that every golden hit you get here is absolutely satisfying to land.
And now the Trophies: These are quite a neat way to both add some sort of replayability through virtual collectables and showing a lot of history of games that showed up on Nintendo consoles, mainly with several unlocalized games having trophies intact on international versions, along with the special trophies that you get from the playable characters after completing any of the regular modes.
These trophies can be obtained not only in the rare chances these can spawn in matches as well as the Snag the Trophies minigame, but also through the Lottery in which you can start getting new Trophies easily with single coins, but as you keep getting more you start needing to rely on using more coins in order to ensure you get new stuff.
With the amount of inherent fun to be had with the multiplayer modes with friends, the content that's there to enjoy in single-player modes (and what's to unlock as well), and just how everything adds up perfectly in presentation, content and gameplay, this is a clear product that shows how much effort it took and why it ended up being the Gamecube's best seller of all time.
Interestingly enough I ended up investing myself a bit more with this one with the Single Player stuff instead of being a bit more spread out as I really couldn't help myself; I hadn't played this game in a long while and going back through the memory lane of Classic and Adventure was something that brought me a lot of joy back then and now does so again. And while there's a lot more facts about this game (like Marth and Roy being featured in all versions despite the Fire Emblem series not having single localized title at the time), I really can't understate what this game does represent for me: A cornerstone celebration of everything Nintendo in one of the most epic ways ever conceivable.
Yes, I know that there's the fascinating tale of how this game still keeps an active competitive scene after so many years of hardships, which brought a lot of new things for the game in form of mods, but there's also something special with what the original game intended (after all, this game stuck with all of those competitive players for a reason): A beautiful tribute of the many Nintendo franchises that meant a lot to many players out there with the incredible soundtrack, the trophies being a fascinating glossary on how many obscure and famous things they made, and of course the game itself being a stellar party game coupled with a solid amount of single player stuff and wonders of unlocking new things.
And on the sentiment of both Sakurai's intentions and efforts, I would like to end this by recommending the following video if you're interested in knowing the development of Melee; Sakurai envisioned an incredible amount of things and worked incredibly hard to make all these visions a reality, risking his health due to his overwork...but all the driving ambition of this man in the end paying off incredibly. It is an hour long but I can assure you that in the free hour that you have to watch this, it will be quite a ride.

Vale, este es probablemente uno de los juegos más conocidos (y más queridos) de todos los tiempos que quizá no necesite ninguna presentación... por lo que exactamente me siento realmente obligado a hablar de este juego. No solo por el increíble éxito que tuvo en su ámbito y más allá de él, sino también porque fue un favorito absoluto para mis hermanos y para mí durante mi infancia, ya que siempre iba con el Dr. Mario y Jigglypuff contra Marth y Roy para uno de mis hermanos, y Fox y Link para el otro.
La cantidad de esfuerzo y cuidado que puso Masahiro Sakurai (el principal productor detrás de esta franquicia, así como de Kirby y algunos otros) realmente se muestra en la presentación épica, las referencias nostálgicas y los trofeos, y el modo de juego muy pulido que irónicamente llevaría a una base de fans dedicada a llevarlo más allá de la intención de juego de fiesta en un juego de lucha impresionantemente competitivo pero poco ortodoxo ...
Pero como soy un pez pequeño en lo que sería ese mundo (sobre todo online) además de asumir el significado que Sakurai pensó en cada momento del desarrollo de este juego, hablaré de todas las impresionantes escenas, las soberbias melodías y los aplastantes momentos de diversión y desafío que componen este único juego llamado Super Smash Brothers Melee.
En primer lugar quiero hablar de los Modos 1P, que son uno de los puntos más destacados de Melee. Para ser honesto hay mucho que desempacar desde este menú así que hablaré de cada cosa que puedes encontrar en esta sección.
- Regular Match tiene tres modos (pero el tercero es desbloqueable): Classic, Adventure y A--Star.
- Event Match es más o menos un modo de misión con configuraciones de partido específicas y a veces con personajes establecidos.
- Stadium es la sección de "minijuegos" en la que tienes Break the Targets, Home Run Contest y Multi-Man Melee.
- Training es, por supuesto, el modo obligatorio de Entrenamiento en el que puedes generar objetos e incluso cambiar la velocidad del juego durante el tiempo que lo utilices.
El modo Classic está estructurado en varias batallas, siendo a veces 2 contra 2, 3 contra 1 enemigo gigante, o tú contra todo un equipo de enemigos (que para compensar, son mucho más fáciles de mandar a volar).
Entre estos combates, hay una especie de minijuegos: Break the Targets (del que hablaré con más detalle más adelante), Snag the Trophies (en el que tienes que golpear los trofeos que caen en un cuenco para conseguirlos; también explicaré los Trofeos muy pronto), y Race to the Finish, en el que tienes que llegar lo más lejos posible en menos de un minuto. Y digo "tan lejos como puedas" ya que estos niveles realmente te dejan más de una salida para que la consigas, pero estos te darían menos puntos/monedas que llegar a una distancia mayor o al final del escenario.
Al final tienes que enfrentarte a Master Hand, una gigantesca mano incorpórea que puede disparar láseres y misiles, además de dar puñetazos y golpes contra ti. Puede que te lleves una sorpresa aquí si juegas en difícil o muy difícil :)
Los créditos finales (tanto aquí como en los otros modos de Partida Regular) reproducen el tema de tu personaje mientras vuelas por el espacio, con el nombre del personal que desarrolló el juego pasando por allí y con una retícula para dispararles láseres. Esta pantalla de créditos es más o menos un minijuego de disparos, pero la forma en que se ve la canción de tu personaje elegido hace que se sienta bien.
Y una vez hecho esto, podemos pasar al siguiente... ¿¡Espera qué es eso!?
Oh, hola, es mi viejo amigo el Dr. Mario. ¿Qué es eso, no quiere venir con nosotros? No hay problema, una buena pelea y se unirá a nosotros.
Aprovecho para mencionar que estaba jugando desde un archivo de guardado nuevo, por lo que no tenía nada desbloqueado... y la sensación de desbloquear cosas fue bastante divertida de recuperar. Y en cuanto a lo que realmente ocurrió, el desbloqueo de personajes puede ocurrir desde que se supera un determinado modo normalmente, hasta que se hace bajo ciertas condiciones... hasta cosas aún más crípticas, como tener 20 horas de partidas VS registradas... y el atajo más rápido para eso es pasar al menos 5 horas de partidas VS con 4 jugadores humanos.
O bueno, al menos ese el primer paso. Como has visto más arriba, cuando consigues un "Challenger Approaching", tienes que enfrentarte al personaje en cuestión, y vencerlo es lo que te da el codiciado desbloqueo.
De todos modos, ¡ahora pasamos al modo Adventure! Este es particularmente interesante, ya que en lugar de enfrentamientos aleatorios, pasas por un par de etapas; algunas son enfrentamientos establecidos, pero otras te obligan a jugar antes una etapa de plataformas.
Atravesar el Reino Champiñón para luchar contra Mario y Peach, atravesar el Laberinto Subterráneo para encontrar la Trifuerza en una de las varias salas que hay para luego luchar contra Zelda, ir a Brinstar y luchar contra Samus- oh no...
¡Más vale que te des prisa con tus pies lentos o si no vas a volar con el planeta! (Y además, todo esto es un guiño a Super Metroid en el que hay secuencias de escape como esta en las que tienes que correr directamente hacia la superficie antes de una explosión)
Y después de eso pasas por unas cuantas fases más y... ¡oh, qué bien, F-Zero! Espera, aguanta el teléfono... Bien, parece que hay máquinas de 1000km/h que van directas a mi cabeza y tengo que correr por mi vida... ¡Por suerte hay algunas plataformas rosas por encima de la carretera para evitar una muerte segura!
Con esto hecho y un par de etapas más resueltas, llegamos al Destino Final con una épica batalla contra Bowser que logramos fácilmente, ya que su derrota muestra su trofeo cayendo al vacío negro y- AHORA QUE PASA
Espera, ¿por qué has vuelto?
¿Qué está pasando con el trofeo- ¡¿QUÉ?!
Oh vaya.
Si estabas jugando en Normal o superior (y no tardaste demasiado en llegar a Bowser), Giga Bowser es el último obstáculo que te espera al final de la Aventura. Si bien tiene un tamaño ENORME, lo que significa que puede ser un objetivo más grande, significa que sus puños también son enormes y pueden hacerte desaparecer fácilmente. Pero si consigues vencer a esta tortuga de tamaño descomunal una vez más...

Y con esto, aparte de algunas cosas que no he mencionado (o que pueden cambiar dependiendo de que ciertos personajes estén desbloqueados o no), podemos dar por terminado el modo Aventura... Oh, espera, un nuevo personaje está llamando a la puerta.
Muy bien, ahora podemos pasar al resto de los modos para un jugador. Así pues, Partida de Eventos ofrece varias misiones, como ya he mencionado, empezando con solo 10 eventos hasta que sigas desbloqueando personajes, terminando con 51 eventos. Y si los eventos All-Star te dejan con ganas de más, solo tienes que esperar a conseguir todos los personajes; ya que te espera el modo All-Star en el que te enfrentas a todos los personajes en un desafío al estilo Supervivencia.
¡Y ahora podemos llegar a los modos Stadium! El modo más desafiante es Cruel Melee, que es realmente cruel, ya que los enemigos tienen mucha resistencia y tú, en cambio, puedes ser noqueado casi instantáneamente por cualquiera de sus ataques.
Y con esto podemos pasar por fin al aspecto probablemente más conocido del juego: El bien llamado Modo VS. donde nos esperaba toda la diversión multijugador. Desde partidos estándar con reglas configurables (cantidad de acciones, tiempo, knockback, equipos) hasta modos más locos en Special Melee, seguro que había muchas formas de jugar a las que ayudaba claramente el propio juego.
¿Y qué puedo decir de la jugabilidad que no se sepa ya? Además de poder jugar con vidas, de quien consiga el mayor número de KO bajo un límite de tiempo, o incluso de destrozar las monedas de los demás, la jugabilidad es simplemente increíblemente sólida. Con los conocidos controles intuitivos para principiantes que forman parte de todos los juegos de Smash, junto con la sensación de dinamismo que da el juego con los controles ágiles y la velocidad suave, puede parecer un poco más castigado de lo esperado, pero el riesgo y la recompensa en juego aquí significa que cada golpe de oro que se consigue aquí es absolutamente satisfactorio para aterrizar.
Y ahora los trofeos: Estos son una forma bastante ingeniosa tanto de añadir algún tipo de rejugabilidad a través de coleccionables virtuales como de mostrar un montón de historia de los juegos que aparecieron en las consolas de Nintendo, principalmente con varios juegos no localizados que tienen trofeos intactos en las versiones internacionales, junto con los trofeos especiales que obtienes de los personajes jugables después de completar cualquiera de los modos regulares.
Estos trofeos pueden obtenerse no solo en las raras ocasiones en que estos pueden aparecer en las partidas, así como en el minijuego Snag the Trophies, sino también a través de la Lotería, en la que puedes empezar a conseguir nuevos trofeos fácilmente con monedas sueltas, pero a medida que vas consiguiendo más empiezas a necesitar usar más monedas para asegurarte de conseguir cosas nuevas.

Curiosamente, acabé invirtiendo un poco más en este con el material para un solo jugador en lugar de estar un poco más repartido, ya que realmente no pude evitarlo; hacía mucho tiempo que no jugaba a este juego y volver a recorrer el carril de los recuerdos del Clásico y la Aventura fue algo que me dio muchas alegrías en su día y ahora lo vuelve a hacer. Y aunque hay muchos más datos sobre este juego (como que Marth y Roy aparecen en todas las versiones a pesar de que la serie Fire Emblem no tenía ningún título localizado en su momento), no puedo dejar de mencionar lo que este juego representa para mí: Una celebración de la piedra angular de todo lo que es Nintendo en una de las formas más épicas que se puedan concebir.
Sí, ya sé que existe la fascinante historia de cómo este juego sigue manteniendo una escena competitiva activa después de tantos años de penurias, lo que trajo muchas novedades para el juego en forma de mods, pero también hay algo especial con lo que el juego original pretendía (después de todo, este juego se quedó con todos esos jugadores competitivos por alguna razón): Un bello homenaje a las muchas franquicias de Nintendo que significaron mucho para muchos jugadores, con una banda sonora increíble, los trofeos, que son un glosario fascinante sobre la cantidad de cosas oscuras y famosas que hicieron, y, por supuesto, el juego en sí, que es un party game estelar junto con una cantidad sólida de cosas para un jugador y maravillas para desbloquear cosas nuevas.
