Trackmania Nations Forever is probably one of the most unique racing games out there in many aspects, with the first thing being that the game is completely for free. While there's actually a paid version of this game called Trackmania United Forever that adds more enviroments with different driving physics instead of only the Stadium venue being avaliable, Nations is not a downgraded or limited game by any means. And if the term "free to play" raises a red flag for you, don't worry, there are absolutely no microtransactions in this game :)
The reason behind that statment is that what Nations offers you despite being a free game is incredibly solid, packaged with means of replayability and custom content. The premise is very simple: Drive from the start to the end on a track, with some having mandatory checkpoints to go through; tracks can be an one-way course or a multiple lap course. Sounds simple, but when you get your hands on the wheel, everything makes sense.
The Formula 1 car has decent acceleration but, being a Formula 1 car after all, can reach quite high speeds with enough time. Here is where your skill with taking corners, knowing where to let go of the accel (or just brake), and split-second reactions are put to test, as getting Gold on simple tracks requires you to be precise with your driving while keeping enough speed.
And that's only the simple tracks. The key aspect gives Trackmania its uniqueness are the tracks not being just simple ovals and circuits: From roads mid-air with elevations, jumps, dirt sections and holes to watch for, to ramps, jumps and even loops that make your speed both an enhancing feeling and a valuable reward in the challenge of not making a mistake into bumping on something, falling off the track or losing too much speed with the brakes.
The main campaign included (dubbed the Nadeo tracks) go through 5 tiers with 30 tracks in each one (except the last, which has only 5). The first tiers and tracks are simple enough to understand and complete, but still offer challenge with the Gold and secret Author medal times to keep racing until you beat the times. Later tracks get much more crazy and creative with the tracks which require bolder stunts to survive and higher precision for Gold/Author medals. The Black tier has the toughest tracks of the official campaign with equally as difficult unlock conditions.
With the difficulty ramp in the levels being quite adequate, there's a lot of fun to be had with perfecting times in the included maps...but there's much more than that avaliable as well. Firstly, on top of the amount of country-themed cars to choose from by default, you can download custom car models and play with them. The car below is the Toyota Celica GT4, which I picked as I associate it certain racing game I talked about recently.
What's more, the game lets you custom paint any cars you have, including custom ones. With that chance at hand, I ended up making a custom HGC-themed paint of this car. Using the text option, some careful brush painting for the orange areas and stamping some few decals, this is the result!
The real biggest feature thanks to the community is the amount of custom maps for the game. As Trackmania actually includes a track editor by default and a simple format to import these, it is easy to pick any custom maps you find of any kind. Speaking of map kinds, some are acrobatic/stunt-like, others are simpler or have laps, but the highlights often are fullspeed maps that are quite crazy with the jumps and need to keep speed at all times to make those. For these, you have to react fast and precisely to any turns in order to win.
One of the easiest way to play custom maps however is to play online: Many servers hosted have a huge array of maps being rotated, at which several players compete for the best time (everybody else shows as ghosts which you can touch). It is a fun way to incentivate yourself as well as the other players to aim for the best as there is an element of competition even when its not a traditional race.
On the right maps, you can get quickly attracted to the time attack battle when playing online, or sometimes the struggle is about getting to the finish at all. In any case, it is definitely an unique experience.
This is a game I'd definitely recommend to anyone as not only it is quite easy to get going (both the fact that its completely free and the easy maps being easy enough), but there's definitely much more awaiting for you beyond the starting steps. And if you were wondering, yes, I would play this with anybody here if you ask me :D

Trackmania Nations Forever es probablemente uno de los juegos de carreras más singulares que existen en muchos aspectos, siendo el primero de ellos que el juego es completamente gratuito. Aunque existe una versión de pago de este juego llamada Trackmania United Forever que añade más entornos con una física de conducción diferente en lugar de estar disponible únicamente el estadio, Nations no es un juego rebajado o limitado de ninguna manera. Y si el término "free to play" te hace dudar, no te preocupes, no hay microtransacciones en este juego :)
La razón detrás de esa afirmación es que lo que Nations te ofrece a pesar de ser un juego gratuito es increíblemente sólido, con medios de rejugabilidad y contenido personalizado. La premisa es muy sencilla: Conduce desde el principio hasta el final en una pista, algunas de las cuales tienen puntos de control obligatorios por los que pasar; las pistas pueden ser de un solo sentido o de varias vueltas. Suena sencillo, pero cuando te pones al volante, todo cobra sentido.
El coche de Fórmula 1 tiene una aceleración decente pero, al ser un coche de Fórmula 1 después de todo, puede alcanzar velocidades bastante altas con el tiempo suficiente. Aquí es donde se pone a prueba tu habilidad para tomar las curvas, saber dónde soltar el acelerador (o simplemente frenar) y las reacciones en fracciones de segundo, ya que conseguir el oro en pistas sencillas requiere que seas preciso con tu conducción mientras mantienes la velocidad suficiente.
Y eso es solo en las pistas sencillas. El aspecto clave que da a Trackmania su singularidad son las pistas que no son simples óvalos y circuitos: Desde carreteras en el aire con elevaciones, saltos, tramos de tierra y agujeros a los que hay que prestar atención, hasta rampas, saltos e incluso bucles que hacen que tu velocidad sea tanto una sensación de mejora como una valiosa recompensa en el reto de no cometer un error al chocar con algo, caerse de la pista o perder demasiada velocidad con los frenos.
La campaña principal incluida (llamada las pistas de Nadeo) pasa por 5 niveles con 30 pistas en cada uno (excepto el último, que sólo tiene 5). Los primeros niveles y circuitos son lo suficientemente sencillos como para entenderlos y completarlos, pero aún así ofrecen un desafío con los tiempos de medalla de Oro y secreto Autor para seguir corriendo hasta superar los tiempos. Las pistas posteriores se vuelven mucho más locas y creativas, y requieren acrobacias más atrevidas para sobrevivir y una mayor precisión para obtener las medallas de Oro/Autor. El nivel Negro tiene las pistas más difíciles de la campaña oficial con condiciones de desbloqueo igualmente difíciles.
La rampa de dificultad de los niveles es bastante adecuada, por lo que es muy divertido perfeccionar los tiempos en los mapas incluidos... pero también hay mucho más que eso. En primer lugar, además de la cantidad de coches de temática nacional que se pueden elegir por defecto, puedes descargar modelos de coches personalizados y jugar con ellos. El coche que aparece a continuación es el Toyota Celica GT4, que elegí porque lo asocio a cierto juego de carreras del que hablé recientemente.
Además, el juego te permite pintar de forma personalizada los coches que tengas, incluso los personalizados. Con esa posibilidad a mano, acabé haciendo una pintura personalizada con temática HGC de este coche. Utilizando la opción de texto, un poco de pintura cuidadosa con pincel para las zonas naranjas y estampando algunas calcomanías, ¡este es el resultado!
La verdadera característica más importante gracias a la comunidad es la cantidad de mapas personalizados para el juego. Como Trackmania incluye un editor de pistas por defecto y un formato sencillo para importarlas, es fácil escoger cualquier mapa personalizado que encuentres de cualquier tipo. Hablando de tipos de mapas, algunos son acrobáticos/de aturdimiento, otros son más sencillos o tienen vueltas, pero los más destacados suelen ser los mapas fullspeed que son bastante locos con los saltos y necesitan mantener la velocidad en todo momento para realizarlos. En ellos hay que reaccionar rápido y con precisión en los giros para ganar.
Sin embargo, una de las formas más fáciles de jugar a los mapas personalizados es jugar online: Muchos servidores alojados tienen una gran variedad de mapas que van rotando, en los que varios jugadores compiten por el mejor tiempo (todos los demás aparecen como fantasmas que puedes tocar). Es una forma divertida de incentivarse a sí mismo y a los demás jugadores para aspirar a lo mejor, ya que hay un elemento de competición incluso cuando no es una carrera tradicional.
En los mapas adecuados, puedes sentirte rápidamente atraído por la batalla de ataque al tiempo cuando juegas en línea, o a veces la lucha consiste en llegar a la meta. En cualquier caso, es definitivamente una experiencia única.
Este es un juego que definitivamente recomendaría a cualquiera, ya que no sólo es bastante fácil de empezar (tanto por el hecho de que es completamente gratis como por los mapas fáciles que son bastante fáciles), sino que definitivamente hay mucho más esperándote más allá de los pasos iniciales. Y si te lo estás preguntando, sí, jugaría a esto con cualquiera de aquí si me lo preguntan :D
