Recently I've been busy with some college stuff and I haven't written because of that, but today I tried for the first time the Free for All mode in Pokémon Showdown...and it's really interesting!!! For starters, Pokémon Showdown is a free simulator made by fans of Pokémon battles allowing you to do random battles or with pre-armed teams (a la Pokémon Stadium) and a variety of modes. The funny thing is that today I was just playing at the beginning what I thought would be nothing more than double games (2v2) with my friends...and something I realized at the end of the second game I played today was that we were not playing by teams...but Free For All...of 4 players in a Pokémon battle.
The main reason this surprised me is because, in case you didn't find the title or the idea strange, this is something you can't do in any official Pokémon game, both in the main line of games (dual battles being introduced in the third generation) and in the console versions before the Switch with a different approach (Stadium, Colosseum, XD, Battle Revolution). And the second was because...in the second game we played this (since the first one if it was a real 2v2), I laughed a lot with the attacks made by who I thought was the player's partner in the top corner...until I see that I was left alone with my "partner" and the battle was still going on. I attack the air to see if it was "fixed" and I see that the one next to me attacks me finishing with my last Pokémon...and that's when I read the "Free for All" joke. Just to mention, my Gyarados had attacked first (in the air) before the Slowpoke because of the speed, so without knowing that mode, I know I practically won even though I didn't know I had to attack the one next to me to really win 🤠
The battle after that was where I was aware of being able to attack both the one next to me and the two in front of me...and I definitely decided to get even a bit (and get a few laughs) by attacking the one next to me (also taking advantage of the fact that from time to time the other two would also join the focus). Something I noticed in this FFA mode is that about half of your Pokémon team (receiving 6 Pokémon in total) comes with the move "Protection", which for those who don't know it, serves infallibly in the first turn used to avoid almost all attacks (it seems that there are very few attacks that can do damage even with that shield active, such as attacks with your Pokémon in Dynamax mode)...but it can't be repeated immediately after a use because it will always fail. This means that at certain times, you have the option to use this move to cover yourself from the possibility of one of the players using an effective attack against you, an attack that does damage to everyone (like Earthquake)...or simply that you are considered a threat and everyone tries to attack you at the same time. Adding to that, we were playing with voice chat, so there were many words here and there of madness and reactions to the carnage; especially when after several failed attempts with Wobuffet and Mirror Coat, I managed to use it and it killed a Pokémon instantly 🤣
Although in the end I ended up losing because the last one standing outside of me had a Moltres as his penultimate Pokémon...and with that he finished off my remaining 3 Pokémon. But even with all that and all, it was still pretty fun to play with them, and especially something as chaotic as this that I had never expected to try before. Even when I didn't remember all the right types of effectiveness and sometimes the Pokémon came with not very useful moves, it was a fun experience, and I thank the 3 friends I played these games with for inviting me to this madness. And to talk about Pokémon Showdown completely (or also about the games that in a way were the official predecessor of this concept, like Stadium) I would definitely want to make a complete post for it. Hola a todos! Lo curioso es que hoy era nada más jugar al principio lo que pensaba sería nada más partidas dobles (2v2) con mis amigos...y algo que me dí cuenta al final de la segunda partida que jugué hoy era que no estabamos jugando por equipos...sino Free For All...de 4 jugadores en una batalla Pokémon.
El principal motivo por el cual esto me sorprendió es porque, por si no te parecía extraño el título ni la idea, esto es algo que no puedes hacer en ningún juego oficial de Pokémon, tanto en la línea principal de juegos (las batallas dobles siendo introducidas en la tercera generación) como en las versiones de consolas antes de las Switch con un enfoque diferente (Stadium, Colosseum, XD, Battle Revolution). Y el segundo fue porque...en la segunda partida que jugamos esto (ya que la primera si fue un 2v2 de verdad), me reí muchisimo con los ataques que hacía quien pensaba que era el compañero del jugador en la esquina de arriba...hasta que veo que quedé solo con mi "compañero" y la batalla aun seguía. Ataco el aire para ver si "se arreglaba" y veo que el de al lado me ataca terminando con mi último Pokémon...y ahí fue que leí el chiste de "Free for All". Solo para mencionar, mi Gyarados había atacado primero (l aire) antes que el Slowpoke por la velocidad, asi que sin saber de esa modalidad, me consta que practicamente gané aunque no sabía que debía atacar al de al lado para ganar de verdad 🤠
La batalla después de esa fue donde si estaba consciente de poder atacar tanto al de al lado como a los dos de al frente...y definitivamente decidí desquitarme un poco (y sacarme unas risas) echando ataques con el de al lado (también aprovechando que de vez en cuando los otros dos también se unían al focus). Algo que me di cuenta en este modo FFA es que alrededor de mitad de tu equipo Pokémon (recibiendo 6 Pokémon en total) viene con el movimiento "Protección", el cual para quien no lo conozca, sirve infaliblemente en el primer turno utilizado para evitar casi todos los ataques (parece que hay muy pocos ataques que pueden hacer daño aún con ese escudo activo, como los ataques con tu Pokémon en modo Dynamax)...pero no se puede repetir inmediatamente después de un uso porque siempre fallará. Esto significa que en ciertos momentos, tienes la opción de usar este movimiento para cubrirte de la posibilidad de uno de los jugadores usando un ataque efectivo contra tí, un ataque que haga daño a todos (como Terremoto)...o simplemente que seas considerado una amenaza y todos intenten atacarte al mismo tiempo. Agregando a eso, estuvimos jugando con chat de voz, asi que hubieron muchas palabras aquí y allá de locura y reacciones a la carnicería; especialmente cuando después de varios intentos fallidos con Wobuffet y Mirror Coat, lo logré utilizar y mató a un Pokémon instantáneamente 🤣
Aunque al final terminé perdiendo porque el último en pie fuera de mi tenía un Moltres como su penúltimo Pokémon...y con eso acabó con mis 3 Pokémones restantes. Pero aun con todo y eso, fue bastante divertido jugar con ellos, y especialmente algo tan caótico como esto que nunca había esperado probar antes. Aún cuando no me acordaba de todos los tipos correctos de efectividad y a veces los Pokémones venian con movimientos no muy útiles, fue una experiencia divertida, y les agradezco a los 3 amigos con los que jugué estas partidas por haberme invitado a esa locura. Y pues para hablar de Pokémon Showdown por completo (o pues también de los juegos que de cierta manera fueron el antecesor oficial de este concepto, como Stadium) definitivamente querría hacer un post completo para ello.
