Nothing like a pick up and throw move for a finisher, or even just a good ol' knuckle sandwich to the face, don't you think?
I had mentioned before that I had played thru the entirety of RE5 before with my brother to say that I could, with proper time, talk about how all of that went down...
...Then I got sidetracked by trying Mercenaries mode alone - as he didn't want to play it in RE5 due to its brief nature (although we instead played both side campaigns in RE5). But at least the mode is fully playable if you choose to go solo, albeit you don't get an AI partner to tag along you.
Talking about this mode is actually an interesting way to explain the primer of RE5 basics (with some crossover with RE6) due to how it forces you to apply them, albeit in a different purpose than just running to the exit or trying to whittle down a specific batch of enemies for survival.
In Mercenaries...you have to let them be plentiful...and then exterminate them. And before you ask where does RE6 come in, that's because I also tried out its Mercenaries mode after beating Leon's campaign.
Repurposing levels into arenas
In RE5, each stage you can unlock is based off specific areas you play in some of the missions in story mode, being a bit more open than when you originally encounter them, but nonetheless being finite areas that may have a few dead ends that could spell doom at you.
One of my favorite details is that whoever you play as will melee the time bonus thing on sight - so you can see Chris slam a haymaker into the glowing pillar...and if you get a time bonus after the chopper guy already said he's approaching, he will suddenly say he got caught up on something.
Those weird bugs were definitely rough to deal with wheneve they showed up in the campaign, as they have a fair amount of durability, but what made it the scariest to us was that...welll...
Just don't let your character reload in front of an enemy that can insta-kill you on close range. Like those.
RE5 also includes a No Mercy mode for Mercenaries, which adds A LOT of enemies (plus can only be played solo in RE5)...and a free Rocket Launcher somewhere nearby, but the score needed for certain ranks will be accordingly adjusted for the absurd zombie hordes, so don't think you can get a free S-Rank just for playing in this mode.
That also reminds me that it was through this mode that I discovered that the Executioner boss thing, which you normally have to run from in the first Chapter of the game, can actually be killed with enough bullets and hitting it with the melee twice or thrice when you get it to kneel.
In any case, the sole goal with this mode isn't just surviving to a swarm of zombies under a time limit - but rather hunting them down in a streak for more points, which is the reason you'd want to take the time extensions to continue it further. So far the highest rank I've got is a Rank A in the first level, as there are set score thresholds for each rank, which are increased as well if you play in split-screen.
Opening up possibilities with the combat and mobility
While in RE5 it feels like it tests your aim to headshot enemies as well as knowing the map to navigate both enemies around and picking up the time bonuses, in RE6, it feels more like you have to learn to love RE6's combat mechanics...which is definitely easier for many when you have a sandbox of zombies to brawl with rather than being restrained in ammo through the campaign.
As RE6 lets you melee anytime you want, you technically can start throwing punches anytime, but like in RE5, you'll only often get optimal melee attacks after stunning the enemy with a well placed shot - and with some enemies even as a counterattack chance.
This is also accompanied by new slide and dodge maneuvers to move around enemies faster, as well as a Quick Shot move that somewhat auto aims you to the nearest enemy, even if they are behind you...although that (as well as most melee moves) use up a stock of your stamina bar, so you have to balance between throwing hands and using your guns to keep your fists available most of the time.
The maps vary in the type of enemies that you'll have to face, so while the Urban Chaos map has the variety of zombies you face in Leon's campaign, Steel Beast instead has the J'avo enemies, which are essentially zombies with guns (even rocket launchers at times) and more mutated forms.
RE6 still supports splitscreen for Mercenaries as well as the return of No Mercy mode (this time playable in co-op), and while RE5's is basically its own side game without having any possible influence in the campaign, any skill points you get in RE6's Mercenaries will add up to your total amount of skill points, so if you feel like grinding for those, you can do some merc runs to have more to spend in skills for the campaign.
It was a perfect excuse to get my brother to try it out at least once with me, since we were just a few points short to get the Firearm Master Lv3 skill for the campaign :)
If you are playing alone, the thrill of this mode in either game is to aim for a high combo, which means more points when it ends, on top of feeling like a zombie exterminating machine when you are able to clock many of them in a row, and high ranks on top of being the "nice job" bar to aim for also unlock new characters to play as, including alternate costumes that also have their own loadouts.
Now what's next?
Hmmm...good question.
Aiming for the coveted S-Ranks in these is tougher than it looks if you don't practice these a lot, as those A-Ranks I've got were already product of trying at least from four to six times each due to how mistakes not only are costly in losing your combo, but also in getting caught by any stronger enemies and losing time from being knocked down (let alone potentially if not outright getting killed and losing the run altogether).
But for what these games usually offer in the lengthy campaigns in the form of limited ammo management for swarms of enemies, these quick bursts of action with a more appropiate amount of starting ammunition and express goal of popping heads off as much as you can are quite the fun spin for the gameplay of both games to play with (most notably with RE6, as the campaign is often known to not let you go as wild with the new combat mechanics - except for Mercenaries itself).
Got to give a shoutout to the music for playing Mercenaries in both games as the themes fit them even if they have different energies - RE5's has this dramatic track that fits with having to manage crowds of zombies without getting trapped, while RE6's is more fast paced and fits with how in most cases you are either looking for zombies and turning a lot around when they are nearby.
...I think the only silly nitpick I'd have for those though is that they are the only tracks that play in Mercenaries in either game - outside of RE5's Mercenaries Reunion extra mode that has its own theme. So if you are replaying these a lot, you may want to either get used to those songs or mute the music and put up your own playlist 😅
But I think that was all I had to say about this mode at the moment - and that's not even getting into the RE3 and RE4 variants since I haven't played either game yet (yes, I haven't played RE4 - although I may look into it soon due to this recent RE5/RE6 marathon). It is pretty cool that they repurposed the games combat for what usually is trying to endure an apocalypse and instead making it an arcade-ish hunting game for points.

Reutilización de niveles en arenas
En RE5, cada nivel que puedes desbloquear está basado en zonas específicas que juegas en algunas de las misiones del modo historia, siendo un poco más abiertas que cuando te las encuentras originalmente, pero no por ello dejan de ser zonas finitas que pueden tener algunos callejones sin salida que podrían significar tu perdición.
Uno de mis detalles favoritos es que, juegues con quien juegues, se enfrentará a la bonificación de tiempo en cuanto la vea, así que puedes ver a Chris golpeando el pilar brillante... y si consigues una bonificación de tiempo después de que el tipo del helicóptero haya dicho que se acerca, de repente dirá que se ha entretenido con algo.
Esos bichos raros fueron definitivamente duros de pelar cuando aparecieron en la campaña, ya que tienen bastante durabilidad, pero lo que más miedo nos dio fue que... bueno...

Aspirar a los codiciados rangos S en estos juegos es más difícil de lo que parece si no practicas mucho, ya que los rangos A que conseguí fueron producto de intentarlo al menos de cuatro a seis veces cada uno, debido a que los errores no sólo cuestan perder el combo, sino también ser atrapado por enemigos más fuertes y perder tiempo al ser derribado (por no hablar de la posibilidad de morir y perder la carrera por completo).
Pero para lo que estos juegos suelen ofrecer en las largas campañas en forma de gestión limitada de munición para enjambres de enemigos, estas rápidas ráfagas de acción con una cantidad más apropiada de munición inicial y el objetivo expreso de reventar cabezas todo lo que puedas son un giro muy divertido para la jugabilidad de ambos juegos (sobre todo con RE6, ya que la campaña suele ser conocida por no dejarte ir tan salvaje con la nueva mecánica de combate, excepto en Mercenaries).
Tengo que dar un aplauso a la música de Mercenarios en ambos juegos, ya que los temas encajan con ellos aunque tengan energías diferentes - el de RE5 tiene este tema dramático que encaja con tener que manejar multitudes de zombis sin quedar atrapado, mientras que el de RE6 tiene un ritmo más rápido y encaja con cómo en la mayoría de los casos estás buscando zombis y dando muchas vueltas cuando están cerca.
...Creo que la única pega que les pondría es que son los únicos temas que suenan en Mercenarios en ambos juegos, aparte del modo extra Reunión de Mercenarios de RE5, que tiene su propio tema. Así que si juegas mucho a estos juegos, puede que quieras acostumbrarte a esas canciones o silenciar la música y crear tu propia lista de reproducción 😅.
Pero creo que eso es todo lo que tenía que decir sobre este modo por el momento, y eso sin entrar en las variantes RE3 y RE4, ya que aún no he jugado a ninguno de los dos (sí, no he jugado a RE4, aunque puede que lo haga pronto debido a esta reciente maratón RE5/RE6).
