This is not your ordinary "Games are not Fun anymore" moment.

This is just something that came to my head when I had seen floating on the internet a screenshot about a supposed article about college people getting more fond for old arcade games than usual or something along those lines.

...Being frank here, that's all what I can remember for being the idea starter to write this, and this here being still subjective to my own views and thoughts on the reason why old games tend to be more attractive to people now, outside of one point that I end up bringing up that no doubt was factually a factor in this perceived "resurgence" of love for old games.

Chapter 1: Taste of Simplicity

Sometimes, you might not be thinking about planning a month-long trip or a five star course, but rather just wanting to take a single day off with a simple meal- bonus points if it is with friends.

Most arcade and old console games encapsulate what many indie games have been inspired by: Pick up the controller and play. And its not all just in the graphics.

Some of the oldest classics that were only made possible because the non-existence of hardware for powerhouse 2D or 3D games like we have today had the creativity of designers for the gameplay to stand out, such as:

Allan Alcorn for Pong
Toru Iwatani for Pac-Man
Shigeharu Umezaki for Contra
Shigeru Miyamoto for Donkey Kong and Mario Bros
Gunpei Yokoi, who also was with Miyamoto in both games and also had a hand in producing a handful of other Nintendo classics like the first Metroid, Fire Emblem, Super Mario Land, and so on.
And so many other designers and developers from all those decades.

At most, some of these old games are simple enough to still be engaging even today despite their simplicity, and even at best, they were made so solidly that can be considered to have aged well in gameplay even today, like with the example of Contra which nailed the run-and-gun in a console that could start flickering with too many sprites on screen.

I still have fond memories of Battle City for the Famicom- only because the bootleg Polystation I used to have as a kid had that game, and you guessed it, it isn't hard to guess that you gotta move and shoot tanks to win.

And I have to add that yes, nostalgia tends to be a big factor for some when most of these beloved old games were their childhood, and sometimes there's discourse over whether some of these actually aged well or not (I'm still surprised Super Mario 64 tends to be in this kind of discussion), but that also tends to come down to subjective taste on how these games are analyzed, if properly analyzed with time in the first place.

Most indie games with the aesthetic of old NES and SNES games, or even PS1 and N64 games, not only aim to look familiar in that visual sense, but also pair it with easy to learn, yet potentially hard to master gameplay, which contrasts with the modern releases taking full advantage of hardware for visual spice and detailed cutscenes for stories...which might or might not take a huge chunk of priority over gameplay- it depends of the game and I can't run almost any of these big AAA releases myself so I can't tell you about that experience for sure.

But yeah, sometimes you don't want to set sail into an island for hours, but instead take a jog to the park and back.

Chapter 2: Taste of Length

Admit it, sometimes your backlog of games can stack real fast, and the only thing that adds to it is when you happened to pick some chunky 24h+ games to your shopping cart.

How much you can enjoy from a lengthy game really depends of many factors: Whether the game is full of content and not padding or grinding, how much you like the game at first and how you feel about it with more time, how much time you even have for it in the first place, whether you do sidequests first before the main goal or you do the main goal and then seek the extra stuff...

It is a matter of taste of whether someone enjoys having millions of hours packed in a game [preferably good hours, because once again, some can fill themselves up with padding], but at least in my case, I definitely gravitated towards arcade games, specially racers and light-gun games, because it was a short but packed trip all the way to the end.

If you want to know how long it took me to get hooked to a long racing experience, take in mind that I hadn't played a game like Gran Turismo 2 from the start until January of 2023, and only finished it two months after that. And mind you that the PS1 games are way less lengthy in content than Gran Turismo 4, which actually I played for a while and never finished because I both lost the save and got stumped with the only events I had left requiring specific cars.

There's always a middle point to find between one hour games and adventures that will take you a month or two even if playing constantly: I still have to go back to stuff like Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Halo Reach, but in both cases I had been engaged with the gameplay and done some progress, so its only a matter of getting back to those. Or at least Halo Reach as I had been halfway through, since I just remembered SOTN has the reversed castle...

But hey, now that I have brought up the matter of taste...

Chapter 3: Taste of...Comparison?

Because there's always somewhere this detail about old games being used only to reduce newer games as a whole through generalization.

I'm not exactly talking about the generational bias thing, but more that some of the conversations that are had about new games kinda bring up often the following bullet points:

"Old games were better because they didn't have microtransactions or battle passes"

"Old games were better because they didn't have battle passes"

"Old games were better because they had single player content instead of only online"

"Old games were better because they made them fun instead of cashgrabs"

And don't take it wrong, I absolutely see why messages like this are brought up...because some franchises definitely steered away from what had made them beloved years ago in the first place, but there's also always a hint of influence from the industry and the times rather than just "old game good new game bad".

Although it is very welcome when people can breathe in and properly use older games to analyze new games as it takes detail not only in the new game's ups and downs, but also the old game's hits and misses, because these old games that are often mentioned have their own merits that made them known in the first place, don't you think?

But in any case, rather than treading the usual spiel of what you already know about how microtransactions, battle passes, online over single player in single-player focused franchises and cashgrabs, I can talk about why old games now have been so much more attractive than before.

Emulation is at an all-time high and undoubtedly on the rise (no, Yuzu/cITRA being taken down doesn't mean the end of emulation- those tapes will keep circulating and Ryujinx is still alive too), which means that at least for many internet denizens, playing some of these old games is easier than before, specially when talking about obscure arcade games or internationally unreleased titles. You know that Mother 3 fans are glad to at least able to play their game with a fan translation instead of forever waiting and getting disappointed for an official re-release.

On the note of emulation and accessibility, with the rise of the internet, being able to discover obscure games that are worth your time as well as know what games are not worth your time (Wii owners should know about how that was FULL of shovelware) has been easier than ever. So many Youtube channels out there dig up games you've probably never heard of before and thus give you more stuff to try out rather than what's exclusively on the AAA market.

Speaking of arcade games and accessibility, you have no idea how playing some of these games might have been quite annoying or even impossible on original cabinets; with games designed to much through your credits you would have gone broke or run out of spare change midway through a run just to see the ending. While it can be argued that credit spam does diminish some of these games's difficulty for achieving the ending (mainly any that let you credit spam to continue playing instead of restarting a level/fight like the case of Metal Slug and all light-gun games), at least if you aren't willing to...you know, shell that much on a specific, infamously difficult arcade cabinet, then emulation is saving your pocket there (and also from the idea of purchasing a full cabinet with real hardware)

Conclusion: How much of it is thanks to technology today?

To end this one before I keep running with words too far, I wanted to emphasize further how today we are more conscious of old games and even better ways to play them thanks to players all over the world, either through emulation or even fan-made ports that add extra features.

And for even old games that are just emulated, savestates can save your life for particularly difficult games.

Just remember that there's a platform called Fightcade which lets you play many old arcade fighting games through rollback netcode thanks to emulation. And that most of said fighting games have either never been ported home before, are still stuck in old consoles, or did get modern ports but without online...or even DID get modern ports with rollback, but there's a chunk of the playerbase that still prefers Fightcade.

In any case, more than whatever old titles could offer than new titles don't now, there's also the fact that now these are more accessible than ever before, whether officially or unofficially, and thus so many more people can try these like before. And this new level of consciousness is what allows people to share and rave about these old games- not just out of spite but also out of love for these games they discovered decades later or even happened to grow up with them.

Tetrisphere is still a lil' beloved puzzler in my heart.

Este no es tu momento de "Los juegos ya no son divertidos" ordinario.

Esto es sólo algo que me vino a la cabeza cuando había visto flotando en Internet una captura de pantalla sobre un supuesto artículo acerca de que los universitarios se aficionan más de lo normal a los viejos juegos de arcade o algo por el estilo.

...Siendo franco, eso es todo lo que puedo recordar por haber sido el iniciador de la idea de escribir esto, y esto aquí sigue siendo subjetivo a mis propios puntos de vista y pensamientos sobre la razón por la que los juegos antiguos tienden a ser más atractivos para la gente ahora, fuera de un punto que termino trayendo a colación que sin duda fue de hecho un factor en este percibido "resurgimiento" del amor por los juegos antiguos.

Capítulo 1: El sabor de la sencillez

A veces, puede que no estés pensando en planear un viaje de un mes o un curso de cinco estrellas, sino que sólo quieres tomarte un día libre con una comida sencilla -puntos extra si es con amigos-.

La mayoría de los juegos de arcade y consolas antiguas encapsulan aquello en lo que se han inspirado muchos juegos indie: *Y no sólo en los gráficos.

Algunos de los clásicos más antiguos que sólo fueron posibles gracias a la inexistencia de hardware para juegos potentes en 2D o 3D como los que tenemos hoy en día contaron con la creatividad de diseñadores para que la jugabilidad destacara, como por ejemplo:

A lo sumo, algunos de estos viejos juegos son lo bastante sencillos como para seguir enganchando incluso hoy en día a pesar de su simplicidad, e incluso en el mejor de los casos, se hicieron con tanta solidez que se puede considerar que han envejecido bien en cuanto a jugabilidad incluso hoy en día, como con el ejemplo de Contra, que clavó el run-and-gun en una consola que podía empezar a parpadear con demasiados sprites en pantalla.

Aún guardo un buen recuerdo de Battle City para la Famicom, sólo porque la Polystation pirata que tenía de niño tenía ese juego, y lo has adivinado, no es difícil adivinar que tienes que moverte y disparar a los tanques para ganar.

Y tengo que añadir que sí, la nostalgia tiende a ser un factor importante para algunos cuando la mayoría de estos viejos juegos queridos fueron su infancia, y a veces hay un discurso sobre si algunos de estos realmente envejecido bien o no (todavía estoy sorprendido de Super Mario 64 tiende a estar en este tipo de discusión), pero que también tiende a reducirse a gusto subjetivo sobre cómo se analizan estos juegos, si se analiza adecuadamente con el tiempo en el primer lugar.

La mayoría de los juegos indie con la estética de los antiguos juegos de NES y SNES, o incluso de PS1 y N64, no sólo pretenden parecer familiares en ese sentido visual, sino que también lo combinan con una jugabilidad fácil de aprender, pero potencialmente difícil de dominar, lo que contrasta con los lanzamientos modernos que aprovechan al máximo el hardware para dar sabor visual y detalladas escenas para las historias. ... que pueden o no tener una gran prioridad sobre la jugabilidad, depende del juego y yo no puedo ejecutar casi ninguno de estos grandes lanzamientos AAA, así que no puedo hablarte de esa experiencia con seguridad.

Pero sí, a veces no quieres navegar por una isla durante horas, sino hacer footing hasta el parque y volver.

Capítulo 2: La decisión de la longitud

Admítelo, a veces tus juegos atrasados se acumulan muy rápido, y lo único que hace que aumente es que hayas añadido a tu cesta de la compra algún juego de más de 24 horas.

Cuánto puedes disfrutar de un juego largo depende de muchos factores: Si el juego está lleno de contenido y no es padding o grinding, cuánto te gusta el juego al principio y cómo te sientes sobre él con más tiempo, cuánto tiempo tienes para él en primer lugar, si haces primero las misiones secundarias antes del objetivo principal o haces el objetivo principal y luego buscas las cosas extra...

Es cuestión de gustos si a alguien le gusta tener millones de horas metidas en un juego [preferiblemente buenas horas, porque una vez más, algunos pueden llenarse de relleno], pero al menos en mi caso, me incliné definitivamente por los juegos arcade, especialmente los de carreras y los de armas ligeras, porque era un viaje corto pero repleto hasta el final.

Si quieres saber cuánto tardé en engancharme a una experiencia de carreras larga, ten en cuenta que no había jugado a un juego como Gran Turismo 2 desde el principio hasta enero de 2023, y solo lo terminé dos meses después. Y ten en cuenta que los juegos de PS1 son mucho menos largos en contenido que Gran Turismo 4, al que de hecho jugué durante un tiempo y nunca terminé porque perdí la partida guardada y me quedé perplejo con los únicos eventos que me quedaban que requerían coches específicos.

Siempre hay que encontrar un punto medio entre los juegos de una hora y las aventuras que te llevarán un mes o dos aunque juegues constantemente: Todavía tengo que volver a cosas como Castlevania Symphony of the Night y Halo Reach, pero en ambos casos me había enganchado al juego y había progresado un poco, así que solo es cuestión de volver a ellos. O al menos Halo Reach, ya que me había quedado a medias, porque acabo de recordar que SOTN tiene el castillo al revés...

Pero bueno, ahora que he sacado el tema de los gustos....

Capítulo 3: Sabor a... ¿Comparación?

Porque siempre hay en alguna parte este detalle de que los juegos antiguos se usan sólo para reducir a los juegos más nuevos como un todo a través de la generalización.

No me refiero exactamente a lo de los prejuicios generacionales, sino más bien a que en algunas de las conversaciones que se tienen sobre los juegos nuevos como que salen a menudo los siguientes puntos:

"Los juegos antiguos eran mejores porque no tenían microtransacciones ni pases de batalla"

"Los juegos antiguos eran mejores porque no tenían pases de batalla".

"Los juegos antiguos eran mejores porque tenían contenido para un jugador en lugar de solo online"

"Los juegos antiguos eran mejores porque los hacían divertidos en vez de cashgrabs"

Y no te lo tomes a mal, entiendo perfectamente por qué se plantean mensajes como este... porque algunas franquicias definitivamente se alejaron de lo que las había hecho queridas hace años en primer lugar, pero también hay siempre una pizca de influencia de la industria y los tiempos en lugar de simplemente "juego viejo bueno juego nuevo malo".

Aunque se agradece mucho que la gente pueda respirar y utilizar adecuadamente juegos antiguos para analizar juegos nuevos, ya que no sólo se tienen en cuenta los altibajos del juego nuevo, sino también los aciertos y errores del juego antiguo, porque estos juegos antiguos que se mencionan a menudo tienen sus propios méritos que los hicieron conocidos en primer lugar, ¿no crees?

Pero en cualquier caso, en lugar de seguir la perorata habitual de lo que ya sabéis sobre las microtransacciones, los pases de batalla, el online por encima del single player en franquicias centradas en un solo jugador y los cashgrabs, puedo hablar de por qué los juegos antiguos ahora son mucho más atractivos que antes.

La emulación está en su punto álgido y, sin duda, va en aumento (no, la retirada de Yuzu/cITRA no significa el fin de la emulación: esas cintas seguirán circulando y Ryujinx también sigue vivo), lo que significa que, al menos para muchos internautas, jugar a algunos de estos juegos antiguos es más fácil que antes, sobre todo si hablamos de juegos arcade oscuros o de títulos inéditos a nivel internacional. Ya sabes que los fans de Mother 3 se alegran de poder jugar al menos a su juego con una traducción hecha por fans, en lugar de tener que esperar y desilusionarse eternamente por una reedición oficial.

En cuanto a la emulación y la accesibilidad, con el auge de Internet, es más fácil que nunca descubrir juegos poco conocidos que merecen la pena, así como saber qué juegos no merecen la pena (los poseedores de una Wii deberían saber que estaba llena de shovelware). Hay tantos canales de Youtube que sacan a la luz juegos de los que probablemente nunca hayas oído hablar y, por lo tanto, te ofrecen más cosas que probar en lugar de lo que hay exclusivamente en el mercado AAA.

Hablando de recreativas y accesibilidad, no te imaginas lo molesto o incluso imposible que podía resultar jugar a algunos de estos juegos en las recreativas originales; con juegos diseñados para gastar muchos créditos, te habrías arruinado o te habrías quedado sin monedas en mitad de una partida sólo para ver el final. Aunque se puede argumentar que el spam de créditos disminuye la dificultad de algunos de estos juegos para llegar al final (sobre todo los que te permiten hacer spam de créditos para seguir jugando en lugar de reiniciar un nivel/lucha, como el caso de Metal Slug y todos los juegos de armas ligeras), al menos si no estás dispuesto a... ya sabes, gastar tanto en una máquina recreativa específica e infamemente difícil, la emulación te salvará el bolsillo (y también de la idea de comprar una máquina completa con hardware real).

Conclusión: ¿Cuánto es gracias a la tecnología actual?

Para terminar con esto antes de que siga yendo demasiado lejos con las palabras, quería hacer más hincapié en cómo hoy en día somos más conscientes de los juegos antiguos e incluso mejores formas de jugarlos gracias a jugadores de todo el mundo, ya sea a través de la emulación o incluso de ports hechos por fans que añaden características extra.

Y hasta para juegos viejos que sean emulados, si alguno te fastidia en dificultad, los savestates te pueden salvar la vida.

No hay más que recordar que existe una plataforma llamada Fightcade que permite jugar a muchos juegos de lucha arcade antiguos a través de rollback netcode gracias a la emulación. Y que la mayoría de esos juegos de lucha o bien nunca han sido portados a casa, o bien siguen atascados en consolas antiguas, o han tenido ports modernos pero sin online... o incluso han tenido ports modernos con rollback, pero hay una parte de la base de jugadores que sigue prefiriendo Fightcade.

En cualquier caso, más allá de lo que los títulos antiguos pudieran ofrecer que los nuevos no ofrecen ahora, también está el hecho de que ahora estos son más accesibles que nunca, ya sea oficial o extraoficialmente, y por lo tanto mucha más gente puede probarlos como antes. Y este nuevo nivel de conciencia es lo que permite que la gente comparta y delire sobre estos viejos juegos, no sólo por despecho, sino también por amor a estos juegos que descubrieron décadas después o incluso con los que crecieron.

Tetrisphere sigue siendo un rompecabezas muy querido en mi corazón.
