After three or four months of a friend asking me to try Black Mesa out after having let me in on his Steam family [meaning that I actually have access to a Black Mesa copy on Steam] but holding it off for random reasons, last night I finally bit the bullet and played it.
If you know Half-Life in any capacity, you know Black Mesa: The herculean effort of a fanmade remake that was started years ago but eventually was turned into a standalone game given the blessing of Valve themselves to even be on the Steam website as a paid product [while keeping Crowbar Collective's name as developer and publisher].
This is a game that aimed to refresh that extremely ambitious first game in gameplay and storytelling with those benefits modern engines and hardware can provide - or in other words, remake the game to be modern to showcase that first game's story in higher fidelity.
You could say its comparable to stuff like Silent Hill 2 Remake and the Resident Evil remakes, but this remake does seem to stick in some ways close to the original game [mainly the way story plays out and how levels flow into it], while in others it obviously does do its own thing [modernizing or reimagining a few levels]...but in any case it is up to anyone's preference whether this is preferable to play first over Half Life or viceversa [...or play both].
But as someone that had played a few of the first sections of Half-Life years ago, I was in the middle of knowing a bit of how the game goes [at least up to where you try to escape the soldiers entering the facility, or something like that] while at the same time having not played enough time to remember the levels exactly by memory. So it was still a fresh playthrough for me despite that.
So, without any further ado, time to go through it.
A highly trained professional taking in the new stuff
My first visit to the game was, well, the start of the game taking me slowly through the enviroments of Black Mesa's facilities but redone in higher quality - or at least as high my visual settings allowed it to be [but obviously even in that scenario it still looked quite improved compared to HL1] until I was able to get out...and then stumbled around for a bit in the facilities before getting the HEV suit.
You know, it was funny to mess around with the NPCs and checking the facilities [including peeking at that one room with G-Man talking with a scienting until he looks at me] kind of playing around as Freeman roaming around the facility silently but while acting as a goofball, either nodding around at some dialogues, bothering the NPCs by trying to talk to them twice or thrice to see what they say as at least a few do say more stuff than just "can't you see I'm busy?" and even picking up and throwing trashcans at them - cause this is made in Source so of course you can do that.
And yet, while this obviously makes sense as a Half Life game, it reminded me how insanely cool that was for the time when it was the first shooter that even allowed you to interact with the world that way [minus the object throwing, because that was added in Half Life 2] rather than just...jumping from level to level killing monsters.
But of course you'll get to the monster killing adventure. Just in a while after you get into the HEV Suit - WOAH, THE MUSIC
Imagine the moment you wear the suit having its own theme telling you that shit WILL go down in this game - it is there in HL1 with a different song, but the one in Black Mesa kind of tells you already that "yeah, you will be doing quite a lot, Mr. Freeman" even when at that point you are just getting suited up for a menial experiment.
Experiment that will...
...Go terribly wrong. But hey, at least the suit will keep you from being killed-
Okay.
So when we are back into the facility, everything is destroyed, scientists are either surprised you are alive...or are dying/dead by the time you encounter them. You see a headcrab into a test tube until they start appearing trying to attack you, and then you'll eventually find a guard that you can tell to follow you, shooting down headcrabs and zombified scientists possessed by them.
Eventually, I got to this area where there should be a lift to get out, but whoops...there's nothing.
I actually gave my acting character a kind of a grim starting fate by trying to jump into a dark beam, thinking that it would be a path out, but falling into the dark - you could say that it was either a very foolish fate for a scared scientist or even an intentional demise [but obviously when I was trying to jump at it, it was the former]...
...And then Freeman wakes up with this playing on his head.
Okay, enough playing panicked and clueless scientist, I am a highly trained professional and I don't need to pretend I don't know that I'm going to get a crowbar to fend off by myself.
Finding the right path out
I ended up redoing from where the game autosaved with the guard until to the same place as before, and while I still spent a few minutes confused on where to head out in that area, I eventually noticed a small but cheeky way to continue moving out of the facilities.
An open vent.
Whoops.
As I go through that vent, I end up finding the mythical crowbar, used to jam a door but infinitely more useful as your one and only weapon to smash everything in your way with your own hands.
I don't remember if the crowbar was found exactly like this in HL1, but I wouldn't be surprised that the devs back then thought this exact idea to even explain what purpose would a random crowbar have amidst the chaos of Black Mesa after the incident.
From there onwards, as well as finding a gun, you'll also see the first enemies other than headcrabs and zombies, such as these disgusting things sticking at the top of the ceiling waiting to pull you with their...tongue? And this quadrupedal thing that while being somewhat disgusting too, stands out more because of how it can blast you from afar if you let it do so in its range.
I eventually got to this section and thought I may have been playing too much for being late at night. So I didn't actually complete this first chapter, and while most of the first half was messing around with the calm before the storm as well as cutscenes, it is still cool to see how the game starts moving you ahead into being the Gordon Freeman everyone knows - not a mere scientist but this old shooter juggernaut sitting alongside Doomguy and the Ranger from Quake.
You can see all of this in action on the recording - complete with me acting for a bit until I died and then starting taking it slightly more straight forward [but still acting for things like...trying to bash dead headcrabs and zombies into mush because most of those headcrabs kept hitting me on their first leap lol]
Even the classic multiplayer is back
Yup.
Surprisingly enough, there was a server full of people after I stopped playing single player, so I ended up entering it...and see a truckload of chaos with people catching each other off guard, doing ruckus with shotguns and rocket launchers, or simply giving you a bolt in the head out of nowhere. And sometimes getting to see stupid killcams like G-Man holding a gun [see the above] and this guy.
It was kinda hilarious though and could easily see that the classic deathmatch spirit from the original Half-Life was kept intact here - for better or for worse when there's a ton of players in this area trying to cap your head off on sight.
Shoutouts to that guy who dropped two lines of Never Gonna Give You Up and then we spend the last few minutes of the match going back and forth between lines 😂
Go watch the full chaos here - truly was like a classic FPS lobby and everything with the backstabbing players and occasional trashtalking on the text chat.
That's it for now?
As usual, yeah, I would see if I can follow up on this whenever I do pick it up again [and Mario Kart DS, but that's something else], but at least so far it did impress me the same way HL1 did back when I played it a few years ago - still being as seamless but obviously having the benefit of some modernized things and graphics giving it a more foreboding feeling with the dimly lit destroyed facility.
Maybe I will end up playing Half-Life 2 the day I finish this, but that may not happen soon...at least I did get it for cheap years ago but I did think on playing Black Mesa recently because of that HL2 anniversary event getting many to play it again thanks to the free Steam giveaway. But alas, one crowbar at a time.

...saldría terriblemente mal. Pero bueno, al menos el traje evitará que te maten...

Así que cuando volvemos a las instalaciones, todo está destruido, los científicos se sorprenden de que estés vivo... o están moribundos/muertos para cuando te los encuentras. Ves a un headcrab dentro de un tubo de ensayo hasta que empiezan a aparecer intentando atacarte, y entonces encontrarás finalmente a un guardia al que puedes decirle que te siga, disparando a los headcrabs y a los científicos zombificados poseídos por ellos.
Finalmente, llegué a esta zona donde debería haber un ascensor para salir, pero whoops... no hay nada.
De hecho, le di a mi personaje una especie de sombrío destino inicial al intentar saltar a una viga oscura, pensando que sería un camino de salida, pero cayendo en la oscuridad - se podría decir que era o un destino muy tonto para un científico asustado o incluso un fallecimiento intencionado [pero obviamente cuando intentaba saltar a ella, era lo primero]...
...Y entonces Freeman se despierta con esto sonando en su cabeza.
Vale, ya está bien de jugar al científico despistado y aterrorizado, soy un profesional altamente cualificado y no necesito fingir que no sé que voy a coger una palanca para defenderme yo solo.
Encontrar el camino correcto para salir
Acabé rehaciéndome desde donde el juego se autoguardó con el guardia hasta el mismo lugar de antes, y aunque aún pasé unos minutos confuso sobre hacia dónde dirigirme en esa zona, al final me di cuenta de una pequeña pero descarada forma de seguir avanzando fuera de las instalaciones.
Un respiradero abierto.
Ups.
Al atravesar ese respiradero, acabo encontrando la mítica palanca, utilizada para atascar una puerta pero infinitamente más útil como tu única arma para destrozar todo lo que se interponga en tu camino con tus propias manos.
No recuerdo si la palanca se encontraba exactamente así en HL1, pero no me extrañaría que los devs de entonces pensaran exactamente en esta idea para explicar siquiera qué utilidad tendría una palanca cualquiera en medio del caos de Black Mesa tras el incidente.
A partir de ahí, además de encontrar un arma, también verás los primeros enemigos aparte de los headcrabs y los zombis, como esas cosas asquerosas que se clavan en lo alto del techo esperando para tirarte con su... ¿lengua? Y esta cosa cuadrúpeda que si bien es algo asquerosa también, destaca más por cómo puede reventarte desde lejos si le dejas hacerlo en su radio de acción.
Finalmente llegué a esta sección y pensé que tal vez había estado jugando demasiado por ser tarde en la noche. Así que en realidad no completé este primer capítulo, y aunque la mayor parte de la primera mitad fue un lío con la calma antes de la tormenta, así como escenas de corte, sigue siendo genial ver cómo el juego comienza a moverte hacia adelante para ser el Gordon Freeman que todo el mundo conoce - no un simple científico, sino este viejo monstruo de los shooters sentado junto a Doomguy y el Ranger de Quake.
Podéis ver todo esto en acción en la grabación, con mi actuación durante un rato hasta que morí y luego empecé a ir un poco más directo [pero sin dejar de actuar para cosas como... intentar machacar cabezas de cangrejos y zombis porque la mayoría de esos cangrejos me daban en el primer salto].
Incluso el multijugador clásico está de vuelta

Sorprendentemente, había un servidor lleno de gente después de que dejara de jugar a un solo jugador, así que acabé entrando en él... y ver un camión lleno de caos con gente pillándose unos a otros desprevenidos, haciendo jaleo con escopetas y lanzacohetes, o simplemente dándote un rayo en la cabeza de la nada. Y a veces llegar a ver killcams estúpidas como G-Man sosteniendo una pistola [ver lo anterior] y este tipo.
Sin embargo, fue bastante divertido y pude ver fácilmente que el clásico espíritu deathmatch del Half-Life original se mantuvo intacto aquí - para bien o para mal cuando hay un montón de jugadores en esta zona tratando de cortarte la cabeza nada más verte.

Puede que acabe jugando a Half-Life 2 el día que termine esto, pero puede que eso no ocurra pronto... al menos lo conseguí barato hace años, pero pensé en jugar a Black Mesa hace poco debido al evento del aniversario de HL2, consiguiendo que muchos volvieran a jugarlo gracias al regalo gratuito de Steam.
