Did you expect to hear about a game for the Wii U today?

Well, to be fair...I ended up getting here because I remembered Fast RMX existed, but as the computer I tried it on couldn't run it smoothly, I ended up then givin a shot at Fast Racing Neo, the game that came before...and is basically the same game aside from having less content.

You know, the classic Wii U to Switch case of games getting ported with extra content and even a new name of sorts (like Mario Kart 8 to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe).

But don't think that Neo isn't any less impressive because of that, far from it. The screenshots definitely look like a way more modern game, but it is in fact a Wii U game released in 2015.

And now that I've yapped about the initial backstory of how I ended up trying this one out (at long last - I remember playing FAST Racing League on the Wii and being hyped to hear about this sequel, but once again never had a chance at it until now), it is time that I show you where the sauce is at with this game.

Master the tracks and phase through the boost pads

An aspect carried over from its prequel, FAST Racing League, is the ability to switch between two colored phases to take advantage of boost panels and jump pads that only work if you are in the right phase.

But while FRL had you using a stock of meter to switch phases (as well as spending five out of them for boosts), Neo instead allows you to switch for free anytime, and has blue/orange as the colored pads and phases to be more noticeable.

This change is easier to see that was made in order to accomodate for a much faster gameplay style, as the orbs you get stock up exclusively for your boost meter which you can use anytime, and thus leaving you with a more "traditional" anti-gravity racer where using that boost and mastering the air brakes to tackle the tracks at high speeds is paramount.

So...aim for those boost orbs, practice the track and the lines to always catch the colored panels, and if you know there's a straight perfectly suited for it...FLOOR IT.

And yes, the surroundings warp THAT much while you boost, so track knowledge is doubly important for whenever you are in need of unleashing your machine at mach speeds on the racetrack.

A race deadlier than ever

The biggest dangers in some of these tracks are the dynamic hazards, as crashing into one of those will cost you a few seconds of the race and will cost you the lead in the Grand Prix. There's even a track with brief spaceflying sections where you must weave through floating rocks before landing safely.

So...more things to remember after your first ride on those, huh?

And pair all of that with opponent racers that are surprisingly steady even in the earliest Grand Prix class (Subsonic), as while I got at least two first place finishes in each cup, there were tracks where they either managed to overtake/keep a lead and leave me with second...or promptly overtook the moment I crashed into anything.

Boosting into enemies will make them spin out, which comes handy if there's one nearby trying to take a lead - but you can also get nudged with a boost and spun out too, which may happen a few times if the CPU racers are aggressively trying to catch up.

What more is in store?

The first mode that stands out besides Championship is...the Time Trial mode. It is what you expect, although each track has a developer time to beat if you fancy a single racer challenge like it.

There's also local multiplayer support, as well as online...but since the Wii U online servers died years ago, that is no longer usable at all whether on console or emulator (and Pretendo, a community made project to restore online servers for a few 3DS/Wii U games doesn't seem to cover it yet).

The other big mode that was even promoted in a few places as I looked it up is Hero Mode, which is basically really turning the game into bona-fide F-Zero.

...Because your boost gauge is your shield, and any crashes are an instant loss. Tracks are mirrored too, so better be ready for that!

Don't have any first hand experience with it yet though, since you need to have unlocked any tracks in the expert class of the Championship, and I still need to get that done.

But it will be funny when I can look back at the first time I gave this a shot with more experience. Riding the highs of how very well made the sense of speed is...only to eat some crashes in two of the races and barely getting to tie first place in the first cup lol

In any case, while I've only given three cups a test and on the starting speed class, the fact it already goes from 0 to 100 has me hyped to see how further it escalates with the next speed classes.

¿Esperabas oír hablar hoy de un juego para la Wii U?

Bueno, para ser justos... acabé llegando aquí porque recordaba que Fast RMX existía, pero como el ordenador en el que lo probé no podía ejecutarlo sin problemas, acabé entonces dándole una oportunidad a Fast Racing Neo, el juego que vino antes... y que es básicamente el mismo juego aparte de tener menos contenido.

Ya sabéis, el clásico caso de juegos de Wii U a Switch que se portan con contenido extra e incluso con un nuevo nombre (como Mario Kart 8 a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe).

Pero no penséis que Neo no es menos impresionante por eso, ni mucho menos. Las capturas de pantalla definitivamente parecen un juego mucho más moderno, pero en realidad es un juego de Wii U lanzado en 2015.

Y ahora que ya he contado la historia inicial de cómo acabé probando este juego (por fin, recuerdo haber jugado a FAST Racing League en Wii y haberme emocionado al oír hablar de esta secuela, pero, una vez más, nunca tuve la oportunidad de probarlo hasta ahora), es hora de que os muestre dónde está la salsa con este juego.

Domina las pistas y pasa de fase con los pads de impulso

Un aspecto heredado de su precuela, FAST Racing League, es la posibilidad de cambiar entre dos fases de color para aprovechar los paneles de impulso y las plataformas de salto que solo funcionan si estás en la fase correcta.

Pero mientras que FRL te hacía usar una reserva de medidores para cambiar de fase (además de gastar cinco de ellos para los potenciadores), Neo en cambio te permite cambiar gratis en cualquier momento, y tiene azul/naranja como color de las almohadillas y fases para que sea más perceptible.

Este cambio es más fácil de ver y se hizo para adaptarse a un estilo de juego mucho más rápido, ya que los orbes que consigues se acumulan exclusivamente para tu medidor de impulso, que puedes usar en cualquier momento, y te dejan con un corredor antigravedad más «tradicional» en el que usar ese impulso y dominar los frenos de aire para afrontar las pistas a altas velocidades es primordial.

Así que... apunta a esos orbes de impulso, practica la pista y las trazadas para coger siempre los paneles de colores, y si sabes que hay una recta perfectamente adecuada para ello... PISA AL FONDO..

Y sí, el entorno se deforma así mientras impulsas, así que el conocimiento de la pista es doblemente importante para cuando necesites desatar tu máquina a velocidades de mach en la pista de carreras.

Una carrera más mortal que nunca

Los mayores peligros en algunas de estas pistas son los peligros dinámicos, ya que chocar contra uno de ellos te costará unos segundos de carrera y te costará el liderato del Gran Premio. Incluso hay una pista con breves secciones de vuelo espacial en las que debes zigzaguear entre rocas flotantes antes de aterrizar sano y salvo.

Así que... más cosas que recordar después de tu primer paseo en ellas, ¿eh?

Además, los rivales son sorprendentemente constantes incluso en la primera clase de Grand Prix (Subsonic), ya que aunque conseguí al menos dos primeros puestos en cada copa, hubo circuitos en los que consiguieron adelantarme o mantenerme en cabeza y dejarme segundo... o me adelantaron en cuanto me estrellé contra algo.

Al chocar contra los enemigos, estos hacen un trompo, lo que resulta útil si hay alguno cerca intentando ponerse en cabeza, pero también puedes ser empujado con un impulso y hacer un trompo, lo que puede ocurrir unas cuantas veces si los corredores de la CPU intentan alcanzarte agresivamente.

¿Qué más nos espera?

El primer modo que destaca además del Campeonato es... el modo Contrarreloj. Es lo que esperas, aunque cada circuito tiene un tiempo de desarrollo que superar si te apetece un desafío de un solo corredor como este.

También hay soporte para multijugador local, así como online... pero desde que los servidores online de Wii U murieron hace años, eso ya no se puede usar en absoluto ni en consola ni en emulador (y Pretendo, un proyecto hecho por la comunidad para restaurar los servidores online de unos cuantos juegos de 3DS/Wii U no parece cubrirlo todavía).

El otro gran modo que se promocionaba en algunos sitios es el Modo Héroe, que básicamente convierte el juego en un auténtico F-Zero.

...Porque tu indicador de impulso es tu escudo, y cualquier caída es una pérdida instantánea. Las pistas también se reflejan, ¡así que prepárate!

Aún no tengo experiencia de primera mano con él, ya que tienes que haber desbloqueado todos los circuitos en la clase experta del campeonato, y aún tengo que hacerlo.

Pero será divertido cuando recuerde la primera vez que lo probé con más experiencia. Disfrutando de lo bien hecha que está la sensación de velocidad... sólo para comerme algunas caídas en dos de las carreras y apenas llegar a empatar el primer puesto en la primera copa lol

En cualquier caso, aunque sólo he probado tres copas y en la clase de velocidad inicial, el hecho de que ya vaya de 0 a 100 me tiene hypeado por ver cómo va escalando con las siguientes clases de velocidad.
