Surprised to hear me talk about a recently released game?
Well...yeah. I indeed got to check it out fresh out of the oven - thanks to it being made with Unreal Engine 4 and thus being able to run it on the PC where I have tried those other more modern games (I don't think UE5 would be too friendly with a RX 580).
If you are familiar with Garou Mark of the Wolves, this game will feel fairly familiar to you to play...aside from some new mechanics and the game feeling a notch faster than before - more so if you go up against the CPU in arcade mode and start getting combo'd for each mistake you do. Classic SNK for sure 😅
(If the screenshots I share look a bit scuffed, that's due to me having to lower the visual settings for smooth gameplay - but even then you can still distinctly tell the artstyle that makes this game pop out over the rest)
The basic classic fisticuffs
Two punches, two kicks, and a REV button to do a few more things (like REV Guard for blocking with no chip damage, REV Arts for EX special moves, and REV blow for an armored attack that I'll explain more later) that use the new REV meter are what you get.
The rest is down to the classic tried-and-true motion inputs for fighting games...but since this is a modern big budget release after all, it also includes a Smart control style option for using special moves in one button, simplifying that specific process for beginners - but even that control style still allows you to use motion inputs with the two normal attack buttons you're left with.
Besides Freeman and Jae Hoon being absent at the time (plus Grant being dead after Garou, so he's also absent), the rest of the Garou cast is here with varying levels of design tweaks and overhauls - and Terry (with his Garou outfit AND the original Fatal Fury costume as a DLC) is no longer the only OG Fatal Fury rep in this one as Mai and Billy Kane also joined the roster.
The Arcade mode is exactly what you'd expect...which is somewhat nice to confirm since a few games before have lacked it (Street Fighter V) or have a painfully lackluster arcade mode (Tekken 7), and you get little cutscenes for intros, pre-rival fights and endings, with most characters getting around 6-7 fights. And even in Level 3 (out of 5), some CPU fighters can easily take advantage of your mistakes with solid combos.
The REV moves increase the REV meter, and when it fills up, it will Overheat - stopping you from using them further until it cools down.
On the note of REV moves, while I still have to look properly into REV Guard and REV Arts, REV Blow is one that can be easy to notice for any players due to its armored property allowing you to eat through normal attacks, something you can sure practice with the CPU...but also learn that if you get those blocked or whiffed, you'll likely eat a good punish - on top of how spamming them blindly will eventually overheat you.
But you know, you may still get some cheeky counters with it, similar to SF6's Drive moves. As long as you are in S.P.G. mode, since those REV Blows can only be used there.
What it offers outside of the fighting
For those old fighting game fans that wanted to have more character colors and jukeboxes to pick your songs without having to shell out extra money for them, you're in luck, because CotW features both a jukebox mode with all songs from the entire Fatal Fury franchise AND a Color Edit mode that lets you change all the colors of almost all characters have.
Although I noticed the jukebox songs don't seem to change when playing in Arcade mode - outside of whatever you set for the character select.
That green and yellow fit Marco is wearing was through the color edit - although there are way more creative costumes made by others out there (and funnily enough, Ronaldo here cannot be used with color edit).
There's also the Episodes of South Town mode, from which I've heard quite the good things of due to how you go between locales, ocasionally see chatter between the cast (and also some NPCs) and level up your character's stats as you continue playing.
It sure looks like a cool single player story mode to have more to do with the game - although I didn't get to give it a shot since most what I could check was around three characters in Arcade mode.
What else?
Well...it is sure nice that Fatal Fury had a brand new game with a big push after so long, but of course be a matter of time how much of a success it can get to be - especially on the competitive side, although even in that part SNK had been promoting a new tournament for it with a whopping prize pool of 2.5 million dollars, with an entire million going to the champion 😱
But it will be interesting to keep track of how this game evolves, especially in the DLC department when besides the characters already unveiled for the first season pass, the devs had stated not too long before release that they were aiming to bring back way more Fatal Fury characters down the road, on top of the cameos many of them have in Episodes of South Town or the arcade mode endings.
And yeah, I forgot to mention the elephant of the real life people DJ Salvatore Ganacci and soccer guy Ronaldo in this game.
...But I'm just here for ol' Terry Bogard (and Marco Rodriguez) being back at it. ðŸ¤

Los puñetazos clásicos básicos
Dos puñetazos, dos patadas y un botón REV para hacer algunas cosas más (como REV Guard para bloquear sin daño de viruta, REV Arts para movimientos especiales EX y REV blow para un ataque con armadura que explicaré más adelante) que usan el nuevo medidor REV es lo que tienes.
El resto se reduce a las entradas de movimiento clásicas y probadas de los juegos de lucha... pero como al fin y al cabo se trata de un lanzamiento moderno de gran presupuesto, también incluye una opción de estilo de control inteligente para usar movimientos especiales en un botón, simplificando ese proceso especÃfico para los principiantes - pero incluso ese estilo de control te permite usar entradas de movimiento con los dos botones de ataque normales que te quedan.
Además de la ausencia de Freeman y Jae Hoon (y de Grant, muerto después de Garou, por lo que también está ausente), el resto del elenco de Garou está aquà con diversos niveles de ajustes y revisiones de diseño, y Terry (con su traje de Garou Y el traje original de Fatal Fury como DLC) ya no es el único representante de los Fatal Fury originales en esta entrega, ya que Mai y Billy Kane también se unieron a la lista.

Pero sabes, todavÃa puedes conseguir algunos counters descarados con él, similares a los movimientos Drive de SF6. Siempre que estés en modo S.P.G., ya que esos REV Blows solo pueden usarse ahÃ.
Lo que ofrece fuera de la lucha
Para aquellos viejos fans de los juegos de lucha que querÃan tener más colores de personajes y jukeboxes para elegir tus canciones sin tener que desembolsar dinero extra por ellas, estáis de suerte, porque CotW incluye tanto un modo jukebox con todas las canciones de toda la franquicia Fatal Fury COMO un modo Color Edit que te permite cambiar todos los colores que tienen casi todos los personajes.
Aunque me he dado cuenta de que las canciones del jukebox no parecen cambiar cuando juegas en el modo Arcade, aparte de lo que hayas configurado para la selección de personaje.
El traje verde y amarillo que lleva Marco es el resultado de la edición de color, aunque hay trajes mucho más creativos hechos por otros (y, curiosamente, Ronaldo no se puede usar con la edición de color).
También está el modo Episodes of South Town, del que he oÃdo hablar muy bien por la forma en que vas de un lugar a otro, ocasionalmente ves charlas entre el reparto (y también algunos PNJ) y subes de nivel las estadÃsticas de tu personaje a medida que sigues jugando.
Desde luego, parece un modo historia para un jugador muy chulo para tener más que ver con el juego, aunque no llegué a probarlo porque lo que más pude comprobar fue lo de los tres personajes en el modo Arcade.
¿Qué más?
Bueno... está muy bien que Fatal Fury tenga un nuevo juego con un gran empuje después de tanto tiempo, pero por supuesto será cuestión de tiempo el éxito que pueda llegar a tener - especialmente en el lado competitivo, aunque incluso en esa parte SNK habÃa estado promocionando un nuevo torneo para él con la friolera de 2 millones de dólares en premios. 5 millones de dólares, con un millón entero para el campeón 😱
Pero será interesante seguir la evolución del juego, sobre todo en el apartado de DLC, ya que además de los personajes ya desvelados para el primer pase de temporada, los desarrolladores habÃan declarado poco antes del lanzamiento que pretendÃan traer de vuelta a muchos más personajes de Fatal Fury, además de los cameos de muchos de ellos en Episodes of South Town o los finales del modo arcade.
Y sÃ, se me olvidó mencionar al elefante de la vida real DJ Salvatore Ganacci y al futbolista Ronaldo en este juego.
