So...yeah, I finally got to try out Ridge Racer 7, a good while since the day I could try Ridge Racer 6 on an Xbox 360.

This comes courtesy of having available at the moment the same PC where I could play Sonic Frontiers and insertgamehere, running in the RPCS3 emulator with pretty nice results.

Ridge Racer 7 is considered the last mainline release of the old but gold franchise that was Namco's flagship arcade racer in the early 90s AND was a powerhouse of a launch title for the original PS1 - so it is poetic, even if also quite tragic, that the last numbered title was an exclusive release to the PS3, the most advanced hardware the Ridge Racer team had got their hands on so far.

And I emphasize that due to how scattered the releases after this one were. A seemingly competent yet fairly overshadowed title locked to 30fps in the form of Ridge Racer 3D for the 3DS, the severely lacking in content Ridge Racer for the PS Vita, and the divisively different Ridge Racer Unbound were all the games the franchise got after RR7 until going dormant.

At one point there even was an 8th title silently in development for the Nintendo Switch in 2017...and silently cancelled as well, with its existence only being confirmed by a recently leaked prototype of it.

With all of that said, the fact that Ridge Racer 7 had built on both the legacy of the franchise and what was iterated on through the PSP games and RR6 makes it even more unbelievable that there has not been a port of this game nor even a back-compatibility port of this one for PS4 and PS5 (even Ridge Racer 6 got that in Xbox Series X).

And with that long winded backstory, I will now tell you why this game is criminally underlooked by its exclusive status, yet cherished as the last hurrah the Ridge Racer franchise ever got.

Refreshing the presentation

While RR6 iterated on the HUD and menus the PSP games used, RR7 remade all of that to make for another take on a sleek futurtistic look, while making it distinct from its predecessor at a first glance. In other words, while RR6's menus use this white motif and an HD version of the blue numbers the PSP HUD used, RR7 uses darker blue menus and redesigned HUD numbers.

The game shares some of the car and stage work with Ridge Racer 6, but even that looks slightly different here because of how there's more saturation and bright colors overall compared to RR6 being more muted, as well as getting a new set of music.

And for being a launch title for the PS3, it is quite the flex that the game runs in a native 1080p resolution with a rock solid 60fps. It may be a bit more demanding in RPCS3 than what it looks like, but at least I was able to play it with that setup after those initial hiccups with shader compilation.

Okay, it's got a little kick

For reference, Ridge Racers 2 on the PSP while was cool as a refresh of the old games with this new gameplay style that would be refined in RR6 and RR7, felt like it was overall easier to beat the CPU at as well as the laps being slower than the original games the tracks come from, especially if starting the campaign from scratch and playing on the slowest speed class, getting minute and half laps in the very first track of the game...

Its not that the PSP games don't have room for improvement when you try to get deep into it - but it can feel like you may be at a shallow level whenever you are starting to get through most of the motions in the starting levels of the campaign while you try to go up a higher speed class.

But Ridge Racer 7 seems to be quite the step up in the risk and reward of what the PSP game offered: The drifts have to be timed better to avoid eating into the walls [as starting a drift from the outside late into a turn will often get your car's rear end riding a wall], but getting a good drift through hairpins is as satisfying as it is rewarding when you keep your machine scratch free and have boost stocked up to speed away in a long straight.

It is most noticeably in tracks with one or two super sharp hairpins, as drifting at the wrong time while approaching those will likely cost you the race.

While I didn't get a chance to give the campaign a whirl, I had seen that it was similar to what I had tried with more time in Ridge Racer 6, which was a set of events, which could range from several normal races to special races with new rules. But my impressions so far are exclusively through the few tracks in Arcade mode I kept trying to beat in 1st place in the fastest category unlocked at the start [Category 1].

I haven't played the PSP game in a while and I can sure imagine that the CPU racers can offer a challenge when cranked to the highest speed class, I definitely don't remember the CPU racers being as vicious as in here, having to restart the Rave City Riverfront and Lost Falls races several times to avoid doing mistakes in big and small turns to overtake and keep the lead in first place.

So I'd say that the extra challenge these console games offer compared to the PSP entries is fairly welcome and does throw me back to a few years ago where I used to play Ridge Racer Revolution a lot to beat all races, even having defeated 13th Racing Kid and, after a lot of attempts, 13th Racing [but not White Angel...].

Conclusion

It is definitely a shame that there isn't a proper modern port of RR7 or a follow up that's similar to it nowadays, since the Ridge Racer franchise could absolutely use some multiplatform numbers [outside of Unbounded, which was their one attempt at that...but it didn't quite hit the mark with old RR fans due to how different it was], but it looks like Bandai Namco was still set in making console-exclusive Ridge Racer titles when the 8th cancelled game was aiming to be a Switch exclusive, and it didn't even get to the finish line.

The closest thing to that is the second PSP game being available in PS4/PS5 since a few years ago, and even more surprisingly, a port of the original arcade Ridge Racer was announced to come for PS4 and Switch 2 is June. But hey, if you go around looking for Ridge Racer 7 online battles, you will actually often find recent or semi-recent videos of some players that still do head to head races online, which is not only super cool to see as there's still people that would dig a return of this game...but also is a window into how insane this gameplay style actually gets once you have unlocked the super high end cars [which was also the case with the PSP games].

Y con esta larga historia, ahora os contaré por qué este juego es criminalmente pasado por alto por su condición de exclusivo, pero apreciado como el último hurra de la franquicia Ridge Racer.

Renovación de la presentación

Mientras que RR6 itera sobre el HUD y los menús que utilizaban los juegos de PSP, RR7 rehace todo eso para dar otra vuelta de tuerca a un elegante aspecto futurista, al tiempo que lo diferencia de su predecesor a primera vista. En otras palabras, mientras que los menús de RR6 usan este motivo blanco y una versión HD de los números azules que usaba el HUD de PSP, RR7 usa menús de color azul más oscuro y números del HUD rediseñados.

El juego comparte algunos de los coches y escenarios con Ridge Racer 6, pero incluso eso se ve ligeramente diferente aquí debido a que hay más saturación y colores brillantes en general en comparación con RR6 que es más apagado, además de obtener un nuevo conjunto de música.

Y para ser un título de lanzamiento para PS3, es todo un logro que el juego se ejecute en una resolución nativa de 1080p con unos sólidos 60 fps. Puede que en RPCS3 sea un poco más exigente de lo que parece, pero al menos he podido jugarlo con esa configuración después de los problemas iniciales con la compilación de sombreadores.

Okey, tienen fuerza estos corredores

Como referencia, Ridge Racers 2 de PSP, aunque era genial como refresco de los juegos antiguos con este nuevo estilo de juego que se perfeccionaría en RR6 y RR7, me dio la sensación de que en general era más fácil vencer a la CPU, así como que las vueltas eran más lentas que en los juegos originales de los que procedían las pistas, especialmente si se empezaba la campaña desde cero y se jugaba en la clase de velocidad más lenta, consiguiendo vueltas de minuto y medio en la primera pista del juego...

No es que los juegos de PSP no tengan margen de mejora cuando intentas adentrarte en ellos, pero puede sentirse como si estuvieras en un nivel superficial cuando empiezas a pasar por la mayoría de los movimientos en los niveles iniciales de la campaña mientras intentas subir a una clase de velocidad superior.

Pero Ridge Racer 7 parece ser todo un paso adelante en cuanto a riesgo y recompensa respecto a lo que ofrecía el juego de PSP: Los derrapes deben programarse mejor para evitar chocar contra los muros [ya que iniciar un derrape desde el exterior al final de una curva a menudo hará que la parte trasera de tu coche toque un muro], pero conseguir un buen derrape a través de las horquillas es tan satisfactorio como gratificante cuando mantienes tu máquina libre de arañazos y tienes impulso para acelerar en una larga recta.

Es más evidente en circuitos con una o dos horquillas muy cerradas, ya que derrapar en el momento equivocado al acercarse a ellas probablemente te costará la carrera.

Aunque no he tenido la oportunidad de probar la campaña, había visto que era similar a lo que había probado con más tiempo en Ridge Racer 6, que era un conjunto de eventos, que podían ir desde varias carreras normales hasta carreras especiales con nuevas reglas. Pero mis impresiones hasta ahora son exclusivamente a través de las pocas pistas del modo Arcade que seguí intentando superar en 1er lugar en la categoría más rápida desbloqueada al principio [Categoría 1].

No he jugado la versión de PSP en un tiempo, y puedo imaginarme que los corredores de la CPU pueden suponer un reto cuando se ponen a la máxima velocidad. No recuerdo que los corredores de la CPU fueran tan fieros como aquí, que tuve que reiniciar las carreras de Rave City Riverfront y Lost Falls varias veces para evitar cometer errores en las curvas grandes y pequeñas para adelantar y mantener el primer puesto.

Así que diría que el reto extra que ofrecen estos juegos de consola en comparación con los de PSP es bastante bienvenido y me retrotrae a hace unos años, cuando jugaba mucho a Ridge Racer Revolution para superar todas las carreras, incluso habiendo derrotado a 13th Racing Kid y, después de muchos intentos, a 13th Racing [pero no a White Angel...].

Conclusión

Es una pena que no haya un port moderno de RR7 o una continuación similar, ya que a la franquicia Ridge Racer le vendrían muy bien los números multiplataforma [aparte de Unbounded, que fue su único intento...]. pero que no acabó de calar entre los viejos fans de RR por lo diferente que era], pero parece que Bandai Namco seguía empeñada en hacer títulos de Ridge Racer exclusivos para consola cuando el octavo juego cancelado pretendía ser exclusivo de Switch, y ni siquiera llegó a la meta.

Lo más parecido a eso es que el segundo juego de PSP esté disponible en PS4/PS5 desde hace unos años, y aún más sorprendente es que se anunciara que un port del Ridge Racer arcade original llegaría para PS4 y Switch 2 es junio. Pero oye, si buscas batallas en línea de Ridge Racer 7, a menudo encontrarás vídeos recientes o semirecientes de algunos jugadores que todavía disputan carreras cara a cara en línea, lo que no solo es genial de ver, ya que todavía hay gente a la que le gustaría que volviera este juego... sino que también es una ventana a lo loco que se vuelve este estilo de juego una vez que has desbloqueado los coches de gama alta [como también ocurrió con los juegos de PSP].
