In the second half of the 90s, while the video game world was already reaching the cusp of revolution with consoles capable of 3D graphics like the arcade boards of those times, along with historical games coming out on computers thanks to the advances seen in that hardware as well, there were still certain masters of their craft taking advantage of the hardware to make incredibly refined 2D games...but at the time these were more or less ignored by the public for being "outdated" in lieu of 3D games. Although Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Megaman X4 and Street Fighter III were games that gave the best in 2D quality, at the time they didn't get as much attention as 3D...but at least today they have been redeemed in the public eye by aging much better over time than the 3D games of the time thanks to the art style provided by being 2D.
A game that encapsulates this principle would be Garou Mark of the Wolves, a game that was designed for the Neo Geo...which was almost 10 years old. The fact that the game could come out the way it did on the same board 9 years ago when that arcade boom was still to come with Street Fighter II is incredible, but it's also due to the invaluable experience of SNK's developers at that point, and that somehow what they needed most was space...which by that time they were able to solve with large cartridges in order to fill the game with detail.
This would be the last installment of the Fatal Fury franchise, but remaining with the name "Garou" internationally in its first versions, which comes from the Japanese name of the franchise "Garou Densetsu" (although some home versions of that time as the Dreamcast changed it to "Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves"). ...but in any case the name difference would suit this one, as it goes a few years into the future with a very different visuals from its predecessors, and the only returning character from the franchise was Terry (with a redesigned look), while the rest of the cast were completely new.
The gameplay is polished and fast, with a "power up" system when you reach a certain part of your life bar that you can choose (either in your last third, middle, or first half) to slowly regenerate your life and have a special attack, and this is only further denoted by the incredibly polished and fluid graphics, a true relic of the time when the sprite masters gave their best even without knowing if it would be fruitful for the time (long before 2D indie games brought redemption in the public eye to this).
An identity marked by both its predecessors and its ambition in departing from them, this game was considered a gem by fighting game lovers and one of those gifts that the turn of the millennium gave them before fighting games spent a few years in decline before reemerging with a vengeance. And speaking of the modern day, it's playable online with rollback netcode through both Fightcade and its official port on consoles and Steam, so it's easy to access and play with others today. That's why I've been able to enjoy this game with a friend and get into close battles against him :)
