A modern classic buried in the minds of today's young adults who a decade ago were children and teenagers, Geometry Dash appeared one day for phones (and later on computers) taking the idea of the flash game The Impossible Game and injecting it with more eye-catching visuals and more modes of movement: You play with a single button and most of the time it's to jump...and that's all you have to beat a map, at least mechanically. In some levels you will have portals that make you jump higher or lower by changing your size, fly like an airplane, fly in zig-zag, fly like Flappy Bird (jumping in the air), or even flip gravity...but all this is still with one button.
Chances are you know some of the reasons for Geometry Dash's notoriety: This game is one of the greatest examples of "easy to learn, hard to master", only on a rather high scale. In the easy levels you just have to make sure you see and learn the right moments where to jump, avoiding the spines and jumping over the yellow and blue portals for extra jumps. However, in addition to the memorization you'll already have to exercise in the early levels, you'll have three big enemies lurking around as you get deeper into the game...because if you die from anything once, it's back to the beginning.
- Attention (be aware of what things are part of the level, identify hazards and patterns).
- Execution (precise jumps, alternate sections with lots of hazards)
- Memorization (remembering each section and how to execute it...plus each portal or platform set as a trap to kill you if you jump over them thinking they are helpful).
By itself the memorization is already something that you must exercise from the first levels with knowing how to do each jump correctly (and even grab the coins in hidden paths that only take a second to fail or are very dangerous to enter), but the levels will soon overload you with obstacles not only for your eyes (which makes you need to pay close attention to know exactly where to jump) but on your fingers as well, as there will be mechanically demanding sections with exact jumps, multiple jumps, and the alternate sections where the rules change and you have to adapt accordingly. And remember, one bad step on your best run through the worst traps in a level...and you're back to square one!
At least there is a Practice mode that uses checkpoints, but the music is always set to the same Practice music, some auto checkpoints might leave you on a dead end (you can always remove checkpoints to go back to the last one before it) and the game will mark it as cleared in Practice mode only (for obvious reasons).
Despite how much this game seems to be designed for rage over inexplicable difficulty, it's definitely not one of those games (like Trap Adventure, QWOP, Getting Over It, I Wanna Be The Guy), but more like something that has a lot more weight on constant practice and living up to it.... I know it doesn't sound different, but I'd talk about the design intent these levels have: The designs with spectacular visuals are both an enjoyment to look at and a way to force you to pay attention to where you're going...until you get to a Zen level and that background is nothing more than a mind-blowing background as you swim through the levels, and the traps are usually not invisible or at least without having some clue nearby. This is much less malevolent than the crazy traps on top of the extreme progress they force you to make for several minutes; the levels are tailored to 1 to 2 minute songs so in theory it doesn't take long to complete one of these.
And well... I've been talking a lot about the game mechanically, but another component that has made this game so famous is its presentation. The first levels have simple presentation to allow clarity in your steps but also in consideration that you are just starting out, but later on they start to have much more elaborate backgrounds and elements. In particular the levels that were added much later in the life of the game, like Fingerdash, have much more visual spectacle than those of the base game with more graphical variety and special effects. And all of these levels when using music, usually have their presentation tailored to how the music plays, giving an energetic background to an energetic song which really becomes fun to watch (and play...at least when you get the hang of it).
But all in all, that doesn't amount to much compared to the audio and visual madness that Geometry Dash players themselves do in the community: The third major strength next to its presentation and simple but intimidating gameplay through level design, is nothing less than being able to create and play custom levels. Having a way to create a level the way you want with the level design you want in this type of game is pretty cool (though make sure you don't do something too stupid or difficult without knowing how to telegraph correctly) only with the limitation of exclusively using songs hosted on Newgrounds, this I imagine to avoid copyright issues, but also serves for the convenience of sharing the level. But this definitely allows many players to create their own levels of different difficulties which practically gives infinite content to the game, and several of these take the effects allowed by the game to the limit to the point that it doesn't seem to be the same game.
So what else could I say about this game? It turns out to be quite interesting with what I explained outside of its extreme difficulty curve and player-made boss fights, and at least it has a lot more to provide outside of its base levels thanks to the community if you feel you need more levels to practice with on Easy or Normal before tackling the Hard levels...but never forget that memory and practice are going to be the only thing that will get you far in this game!

De por sí la memorización ya es algo que debes ejercitar a partir de los primeros niveles con conocer la forma de hacer cada salto correctamente (y hasta agarrar las monedas en caminos ocultos que solo toman un segundo de fallar o son muy peligrosos de entrar), pero los niveles pronto te sobrecargarán de obstáculos no solo para tus ojos (lo cual hace que necesites prestar mucha atención en saber exactamente en donde debes saltar) sino en tus dedos también, ya que habrán secciones mecánicamente exigentes con saltos exactos, múltiples saltos, y las secciones alternativas donde las reglas cambias y tienes que adaptarte como de lugar. Y recuerden, un mal paso en tu mejor racha atravesando por las peores trampas en un nivel...y de vuelta al principio!
Al menos hay un modo Práctica que utiliza puntos de control, pero la música siempre se ajusta a la misma música de Práctica, algunos puntos de control automáticos pueden dejarte en un callejón sin salida (siempre puedes eliminar los puntos de control para volver al último anterior) y el juego lo marcará como despejado sólo en el modo Práctica (por razones obvias).
A pesar de lo mucho que parece estar diseñado este juego para la rabia por dificultad inexplicable, definitivamente no es de esos juegos (como Trap Adventure, QWOP, Getting Over It, I Wanna Be The Guy), sino mas bien como algo que tiene mucho mas peso en práctica constante y estar a la altura...se que no suena diferente, pero hablaría de la intención de diseño que tienen estos niveles: Los diseños con visuales espectaculares son tanto un disfrute de ver como una forma de forzarte a prestar atención a donde vas...hasta que llegues a un nivel Zen y ese fondo sea nada más que un fondo alucinante mientras nadas por los niveles, y las trampas no suelen ser invisibles o al menos sin tener alguna pista cercana. Esto es mucho menos malévolo que las trampas locas encima del progreso extremo que te obligan a hacer por varios minutos; los niveles estan hechos a medida de canciones de 1 a 2 minutos asi que en teoría no tardas mucho en completar uno de estos.
Y bueno...he estado hablando mucho del juego en forma mecánica, pero otro componente que ha hecho este juego tan famoso es su presentación. Los primeros niveles tienen presentación simple para permitir claridad en tus pasos pero también en consideración que estas empezando, pero después empiezan a tener fondos y elementos muchos mas elaborados. En particular los niveles que fueron agregados mucho después en la vida del juego, como Fingerdash, tienen mucho más espectáculo visual que los del juego base con más variedad gráfica y efectos especiales. Y todos estos niveles al utilizar música, suelen tener su presentación hecha a la medida con como se desarrolla la música, dando un fondo energético a una canción energética lo cual realmente llega a ser divertido de ver (y de jugar...al menos cuando lo llegues a dominar).
Pero a pesar de todo, eso no llega a ser mucho comparado con las locuras audiovisuales que hacen los propios jugadores de Geometry Dash en la comunidad: El tercer gran punto fuerte junto a su presentación y a su jugabilidad simple pero intimidante mediante el diseño de niveles, es nada más y nada menos que el poder crear y jugar niveles personalizados. Tener una forma de crear un nivel de la forma que quieras con el diseño de nivel que quieras en este tipo de juego es bastante bueno (aunque asegurense de no hacer algo muy estúpido o dificil sin saber como telegrafiar correctamente) solo con la limitación de usar exclusivamente canciones alojadas en Newgrounds, esto imagino para evitar temas de copyright, pero también sirve para la conveniencia de compartir el nivel. Pero definitivamente esto permite que muchos jugadores creen sus propios niveles de distintas dificultades lo cual prácticamente le da contenido infinito al juego, y varios de estos llevan los efectos que permite el juego al límite al punto de que no parece ser el mismo juego.
Entonces que más podría decir de este juego? Resulta ser bastante interesante con lo que explique fuera de su exterior de curva de dificultad extrema y las peleas de jefes hechos por jugadores, y al menos tiene mucho más que proveer fuera de sus niveles base gracias a la comunidad si sientes que necesitas mas niveles con los cuales practicar en Fácil o Normal antes de enfrentarte a los niveles en Dificil...pero nunca olvides que la memoria y la práctica van a ser lo único que te van a llevar lejos en este juego!
