For a brief context about this game, Scud Race (also known as SEGA Super GT) is basically one of the top classics in SEGA arcade racing games, along with Daytona USA, the Initial D Arcade Stage games, the Outrun series, etc. This one was released in the Model 3 board, which also featured Daytona USA 2 two years later (oh, and if you wondered, the Plus version only added an extra course on top of the original 4 tracks, but outside of that its not really different). This and DUSA2 are sort of a peculiarity in that they haven't been EVER ported officially to any consoles, so the only way you can play this game is by hunting down a cabinet or using the handy Supermodel emulator which I used for the following footage.
I ended up using PadSend, a Nintendo Wii homebrew which let me connect the Wii itself to the computer with a server app and...use the Gamecube controller on my PC. In a nutshell, its using your own Wii as a homebrew, free wireless Gamecube adaptar for your PC (a thing that I might cover here later) and happened to be real handy with this game since not only I think the GC controller is GREAT for racing games...but this game also demands a lot in controlling.
To put it simply, the day I recorded this video I spent around 3 hours attempting over and over to get first place, with less than 10 attempts getting near it, but either messing up at a turn (specially the last turn) or somehow getting anything below instead. Sometimes you can start drifting only by steering all the way in one direction, which is one thing that could make this game in keyboard a nightmare. Basically the driving is quite sensitive to harsh turns, and keeping your drift at the right spot is tough (too little and you'll understeer...too much and you'll literally spin out on the place).
However, not only the difficulty and tightness is what has made many intermediate to expert arcade players acknowledge the incredible feeling and satisfaction this game gives, but also the presentation (from graphics to music) are as quality as SEGA could be in the 90s. Now, without further ado, please enjoy the first time I EVER got first place in the Beginner Day course; a moment where I really could feel proud after the endurance I had to take just to achieve this.
And if you wonder if I will tackle the other tracks...maybe. Just maybe. The Beginner Night track has less turns but the game itself stays unforgiving, and the other tracks can definitely spell disaster without enough skill or grinding. So for now, I hope this was fun to watch!
