Hoo boy, Devil May Cry.
I remember starting a playthrough a few years ago on a friend's borrowed Xbox 360 - as I tried the first trilogy in that situation but kept coming back to the first game several times. But of course, when I gave it back, my DMC1 save was basically forfeit.
...So I definitely had on the back of my head to revisit the game on PC to be able to keep my progress and someday see it through the end, but I had forgot since that last time I played until now how much of a beating this game can be ready to hand you free of charge.
Perhaps saying free of charge is a bit too charitable - as I'll explain due to a certain quirk frmo this game. But anyways, time to party.
Roaming around the basics
Putting aside adjusting to whatever buttons I had set the controls to on the keyboard [as I was playing the PS2 version through an emulator], the game has a decidedly...slow start. Not precisely something that's drawn out, but it isn't straight to action like the third game is.
As you go through the intro about Trish showing up in Dante's place to ask him for help in order to defeat Mundus, you get to this big castle and...as you enter, you'll have to go fetch your first red orbs to open a locked door with a red aura.
If you haven't played this game before, you'll likely run into that locked red door and another blue door that asks you for a key then being a bit confused of what to do. There are enough red orbs in that first area of the castle to open the red door - but you may be able to...miss the memo that you just need those red orbs to open the door if you didn't interact with it early on - which was what happened to me and lost five minutes roaming on that first area 😅
When you go past that door and keep exploring though, you'll eventually find the Rusted Key to open the other door in the lobby being held by this thing.
...And if you were impatient to start swinging your sword and shooting things already, then be happy: These things will start attacking you.
It makes for a good moment to talk about the basic moves you have: On top of the standard weapon you start with and fire at enemies repeatedly, you also have your starting sword to start swinging with. Besides the usual three hit combo you can do if you mash the melee button, delaying your button presses after the first two swings can let you either do another two more quick swings before the big smash - or go into a flurry of multiple stabs.
That last one [Combo C] can be useful to attack enemies back to back to get your first Stylish combo.
These puppet enemies were the only ones seen in the first mission, which ends not too long after finding your weapon and going through some more rooms with them.
But don't let your guard down, because the second mission introduces early on a puppet that can throw you scythes from a distance.
And I died from one of those.
So yeah, you'll have to start getting ready to play smart with your moves - specifically crowd controlling beat-em-up style by knocking down a set of enemies to be able to focus on comboing others into oblivion.
Oh, and also Dante gets stabbed by an electric sword.
But don't worry - he just slips out of the sword and then makes it his. Say hello to Alastor.
It is essentially the first upgrade you get, with how you can obtain new moves with Red Orbs in that store you can access between missions [or by interacting with those golden statues], as well as access the Devil Trigger when the meter is charged and press L1 to turn into a faster, stronger and slowly health-regenerating version of yourself [although note you still can get hurt in this state].
You'll want to have in mind that you have that option there, because- wait, what is this.
Hmmm...yeah, this thing. Turns out that if I die in the second mission once, I'll get offered this option in the next mission - and aside from simplifying controls, it also makes the game easier overall. But you don't unlock a harder difficulty if you beat the game - and as I was playing this with RetroAchievements as well, I noticed you get nothing from those either if you play it in Easy [progression cheevos are tied to Normal or higher].
But this reminder appearing each time I had to start Mission 3 was going to bring a subtle feeling of mockery from the game because of what would come afterwards.

And wouldn't you know - the scorpion is a FIRE scorpion too?
It looks like a spider more than anything, but it has a scorpion's tail.
This is a boss that gave me serious trouble back then, and this time around...it wasn't any different. If not arguably even more than before because of playing with Keyboard instead of a controller.
To set something straight before talking about the mission, this mission is practically just a boss fight...with the added annoyance that you have to interact with the protected Pride of Lion item that opens the door, then get out of the castle, walk all the way to the end of the bridge, interact with what's at the other side, then get back, see the bridge crumble, fight with these skulls underwater, get warped back to the castle entrance - and HERE is where you'll have a checkpoint saved.
What goes next is that you enter the castle, place the item where the altar is, and only THEN you get to fight the boss - but if you die to it, you'll have to get in and put the thing back again to restart the fight.
And note that every time you lose all your yellow orbs, it's Game Over.
Not only those can only be replenished with red orbs on the store, meaning that they are arguably too valuable to waste early on when you don't know what comes next, but also, while you are forced to reload a save after a Game Over - that also means you have to do all the process of Mission 3 before getting another shot at the boss.
Let me tell you, even with fast forward, it can get TEDIOUS fast if it is giving you trouble. And that's the thing: If it is your first time playing, it sure will.
This thing can be attacked either when standing on top of it [since the back is unprotected] or in its face as long as it's not blocking your attacks with the front legs...but in both scenarios there's always at least one melee attack to look out for - along with two trademark moves of it.
When it charges up a big fireball, you'll see it glow yellow until it shoots at you, and that fireball is often fast enough to only be dodged if you're either already running or do a quick roll to the side [unless the boss is behind a pillar and the fireball crashes with it], but beyond using the guns briefly from away and then rolling, trying to attack when it's about to shoot that to you is a BAD idea. Even in Devil Trigger mode it will hurt you a good chunk.
The other distance attack it has is summoning pillars of flames below you - you can notice it will do that move when the face seems to open up, but the only way you'll attack it safely while it uses those is to either move around while firing the guns, or starting your attack as soon as you know it ends.
Melee attacks obviously do way more damage than the ranged weapons, but trying to attack repeatedly on top of it can both be cumbersome because of its movement as well as risky because it can attack you with the tail - so the most reliable way is to go head first and attack...mostly. In most cases it tries to approach you, it will use the front legs to block and only lower them when close enough to you.
Doing a backwards high jump when it's about to attack, doing one or two swings then jumping back again as it tries to attack you again. But time your attacks and escape wrong, and it will sure land a blow on you. Three or four of those without any health upgrades, and say goodbye to a Yellow Orb.
It took me nearly TWO HOURS to eventually get a fight where I was somewhat consistent with the attack and dodge pattern, dodged the fireballs for the most part, used the Devil Trigger to boost my damage as well as heal a bit...and didn't choke with the fire pillars catching me off guard. And of course, I can't forget to mention that sometimes THE CAMERA gets in the way and makes it hard to kee p track of yourself and the boss.
I found the video from the first time I fought the boss in the Xbox 360 version...and I'm honestly not sure if attacking on top of it is actually just straight up more effective or if something else was going on, but while 15 attempts of dying at it isn't something small of a grind, I clearly was doing damage fast in this attempt WITHOUT THE DEVIL TRIGGER...
While my first long scuffle with the spider last night took me the Devil Trigger and even using the healing star to make sure I didn't die, I gave it another go to verify that about the boss weakness being exploitable if I could keep attacking above...by fighting it only with the Force Edge and default starting gun [the latter was also mandatory because I missed the Shotgun in Mission 2 lol]
It took me several attempts and was close to using savestates to retry faster [forfeiting the achievement in Hardcore mode for beating the boss with only the starter weapons]...but I eventually got this run where I was both lucky to evade most fireballs, being on the ground and reacting fast each time it tried using the fire pillars...and somehow getting HALF OF ITS HEALTH DESTROYED WITHOUT TAKING A HIT.
And this time it didn't take me using the Green Star to heal myself up thanks to that much damage done while not losing more than half of my health total in the fight.
Okay so, what else?
Well, first thing I'd like to mentoin is that, again, I had missed the Shotgun in the second mission - but luckily I was able to go back to where it was meant to be and take it - although I did end up looking up exactly where because I didn't think in using the sword to break the one piece of decoration that looked suspucious. Oh well.
Second, I would like to first give an honorable mention to probably the silliest thing in the game so far: Secret Missions.
Specifically, the two secret missions I've encountered where you have to...squash 100 mini spiders. In the second one I found I even was tasked to do so without using weapons.
Those even drop a red orb each, so even though for a while I was stuck in the first one because I was using the less ideal weapon to attempt getting it done, I was also incidentally kinda farming red orbs - although sort of unwillingly [I definitely wanted to get it done but I was just stuck with the wrong approach until I looked up and found out a little obvious detail with my weapon of choice lol].
The third highlight would be...this thing.
Spawning after using the Pride of Lion on a door that asked for it, I had managed to turn it into a sphere form after dealing enough damage...but on top of having taken some myself because of the sudden attack, I didn't think in attacking the sphere...so it recomposed and then ended up killing me. I gave it another go and didn't miss the chance to attack it - and at least weakened the enemy a fair bit until it left and let me progress.
The ending to this post comes from the ending of this fourth mission and its boss, which surprised me when it came out of a mirror, opened a locked door, gestured Dante to come out and then RAN OUT OF THE ROOM. This guy just flat out challenged me to a duel and wanted open room to fight it out.
So yeah, a fight against this boss that seems to have a similar moveset to you - aside from often blocking your attacks and having a strong fireball of his own to counter, but Devil Trigger can allow you to tear through his defense.
But when you win, the cutscene afterwards has the boss take the upper hand over you - until it looks at the Amulet [that the pause menu describes that has Dante's and Vergil's name written in it...note that Vergil hasn't been seen in this game at least so far], seems to be affected by said amulet and then escapes.
...And that's my Devil May Cry experience so far. As cool as I remember, but I should have also remembered that the game pulls no punches anytime it throws a new enemy at you.
I think I had made it up to Mission 8 or 9 last time I played the game? But regardless of how far I got, I know I sure didn't make it to the final boss - so beating the game for good will be something I'll have on sight this time around whenever I can give it more time.

Tal vez decir gratis es un poco demasiado caritativo - como explicaré debido a una cierta peculiaridad frmo este juego. Pero en fin, hora de la fiesta.
Dando vueltas alrededor de lo básico
Dejando a un lado el ajuste a los botones que tenía configurados en el teclado [ya que estaba jugando a la versión de PS2 a través de un emulador], el juego tiene un comienzo decididamente... lento. No es precisamente algo que se alargue, pero no es directo a la acción como el tercer juego.
Cuando pasas por la introducción en la que Trish aparece en casa de Dante para pedirle ayuda para derrotar a Mundus, llegas a un gran castillo y... al entrar, tendrás que ir a buscar tus primeros orbes rojos para abrir una puerta cerrada con un aura roja.
Si no has jugado antes a este juego, es probable que te encuentres con esa puerta roja cerrada y otra puerta azul que te pide una llave y luego te quedes un poco confuso sobre qué hacer. Hay suficientes orbes rojos en esa primera zona del castillo para abrir la puerta roja - pero es posible que... te pierdas el memo de que sólo necesitas esos orbes rojos para abrir la puerta si no interactuaste con ella al principio - que fue lo que me pasó a mí y perdí cinco minutos vagando por esa primera zona 😅.
Sin embargo, cuando pases esa puerta y sigas explorando, al final encontrarás la Llave Oxidada para abrir la otra puerta del vestíbulo que está retenida por esa cosa.
...Y si estabas impaciente por empezar ya a blandir tu espada y disparar a cosas, entonces alégrate: Estas cosas empezarán a atacarte.
Es un buen momento para hablar de los movimientos básicos que tienes: Además del arma estándar con la que empiezas y disparas repetidamente a los enemigos, también tienes tu espada inicial con la que empezar a balancearte. Además del habitual combo de tres golpes que puedes hacer si pulsas el botón de cuerpo a cuerpo, si retrasas la pulsación de los botones después de los dos primeros golpes, puedes dar otros dos golpes rápidos antes del gran golpe, o lanzarte a una ráfaga de puñaladas múltiples.
El último [Combo C] puede ser útil para atacar a enemigos espalda con espalda y conseguir tu primer combo con estilo.
Estos enemigos marioneta fueron los únicos que se vieron en la primera misión, que termina no mucho después de encontrar tu arma y atravesar algunas salas más con ellos.
Pero no bajes la guardia, porque la segunda misión introduce muy pronto una marioneta que puede lanzarte guadañas a distancia.
Y yo morí por una de esas.
Así que sí, tendrás que empezar a prepararte para jugar de forma inteligente con tus movimientos, concretamente controlando a la multitud al estilo beat-em-up derribando a un grupo de enemigos para poder centrarte en comboar a los demás hasta hacerlos desaparecer.
Ah, y también Dante es apuñalado por una espada eléctrica.
Pero no te preocupes: se desliza de la espada y la hace suya. Saluda a Alastor.
Es esencialmente la primera mejora que consigues, con cómo puedes obtener nuevos movimientos con los Orbes Rojos de esa tienda a la que puedes acceder entre misiones [o interactuando con esas estatuas doradas], así como acceder al Disparador Diablo cuando el medidor esté cargado y pulsar L1 para convertirte en una versión de ti mismo más rápida, fuerte y que regenera lentamente la salud [aunque ten en cuenta que aún puedes recibir daño en este estado].
Querrás tener en cuenta que tienes esa opción ahí, porque- espera, ¿qué es esto?
Hmmm... sí, esta cosa. Resulta que si muero en la segunda misión una vez, se me ofrecerá esta opción en la siguiente misión - y aparte de simplificar los controles, también hace que el juego sea más fácil en general. Pero no desbloqueas una dificultad más difícil si superas el juego, y como también estaba jugando con RetroAchievements, me di cuenta de que tampoco consigues nada si juegas en Fácil [los cheevos de progresión están ligados a Normal o superior].
Pero este recordatorio que aparecía cada vez que tenía que empezar la Misión 3 me iba a traer una sutil sensación de burla del juego por lo que vendría después.

Parece una araña más que nada, pero tiene cola de escorpión.
Este es un jefe que me dio serios problemas entonces, y esta vez... no fue diferente. Si no podría decirse que incluso más que antes por jugar con teclado en vez de mando.
Para dejar algo claro antes de hablar de la misión, esta misión es prácticamente un combate contra el jefe... con la molestia añadida de que tienes que interactuar con el objeto protegido Orgullo de León que abre la puerta, luego salir del castillo, caminar hasta el final del puente, interactuar con lo que hay al otro lado, luego volver, ver el puente derrumbarse, luchar con esas calaveras bajo el agua, volver a la entrada del castillo - y AQUÍ es donde tendrás un punto de control guardado.
Lo que sigue es que entras al castillo, colocas el objeto donde está el altar, y sólo ENTONCES puedes luchar contra el jefe - pero si mueres ante él, tendrás que entrar y volver a colocar el objeto para reiniciar la lucha.
Y ten en cuenta que cada vez que pierdas todos tus orbes amarillos, será Game Over.
No solo se pueden reponer con orbes rojos en la tienda, lo que significa que son demasiado valiosos para desperdiciarlos al principio cuando no sabes lo que viene después, sino que además, si te ves obligado a recargar una partida guardada después de un Game Over, eso también significa que tienes que hacer todo el proceso de la misión 3 antes de tener otra oportunidad con el jefe.
Déjame decirte, incluso con el avance rápido, puede llegar a ser TEDIOSO rápido si te está dando problemas. Y esa es la cuestión: Si es la primera vez que juegas, seguro que lo hará.

Cuando carga una gran bola de fuego, la verás brillar en amarillo hasta que te dispara, y esa bola de fuego suele ser lo suficientemente rápida como para que sólo puedas esquivarla si ya estás corriendo o haces un rápido giro hacia un lado [a menos que el jefe esté detrás de un pilar y la bola de fuego choque con él], pero más allá de usar las armas brevemente desde lejos y luego rodar, intentar atacar cuando está a punto de dispararte eso es una MALA idea. Incluso en modo Devil Trigger te hará bastante daño.
El otro ataque a distancia que tiene es invocar pilares de llamas debajo de ti - puedes notar que hará ese movimiento cuando la cara parezca abrirse, pero la única forma de que lo ataques con seguridad mientras los usa es o moverte mientras dispara los cañones, o empezar tu ataque en cuanto sepas que termina.
Los ataques cuerpo a cuerpo obviamente hacen mucho más daño que las armas a distancia, pero intentar atacar repetidamente encima de él puede ser engorroso debido a su movimiento, además de arriesgado porque puede atacarte con la cola, así que la forma más fiable es ir de frente y atacar... casi siempre. Haz un salto alto hacia atrás cuando esté a punto de atacarte, da uno o dos golpes y vuelve a saltar cuando intente atacarte de nuevo. Pero calcula mal tus ataques y tu huida, y seguro que te asesta un golpe. Tres o cuatro de esos sin ninguna mejora de salud, y despídete de un Orbe Amarillo.
Me llevó casi DOS HORAS conseguir un combate en el que fuera coherente con el patrón de ataque y esquiva, esquivara las bolas de fuego en su mayor parte, usara el Devil Trigger para aumentar mi daño y curarme un poco... y no me ahogara con los pilares de fuego que me pillaban desprevenido. Y, por supuesto, no puedo dejar de mencionar que a veces LA CÁMARA se interpone en el camino y hace que sea difícil seguirte a ti mismo y al jefe.
Encontré el vídeo de la primera vez que luché contra el jefe en la versión de Xbox 360... y sinceramente no estoy seguro de si atacar encima es más efectivo o si pasaba algo más, pero mientras que 15 intentos de morir no es que sea una pequeña molestia, claramente estaba haciendo daño rápido en este intento SIN EL DEVIL TRIGGER...
Mientras que mi primera larga pelea con la araña anoche me llevó el Devil Trigger e incluso usando la estrella de curación para asegurarme de que no moría, le di otra oportunidad para verificar que la debilidad del jefe era explotable si podía seguir atacando por encima... luchando sólo con el Force Edge y la pistola de inicio por defecto [esta última también era obligatoria porque me perdí la escopeta en la misión 2 lol].
Me costó varios intentos y estuve a punto de usar savestates para reintentarlo más rápido [perdiendo el logro en modo Hardcore por vencer al jefe solo con las armas de inicio]... pero al final conseguí esta racha en la que tuve la suerte de esquivar la mayoría de bolas de fuego, estar en el suelo y reaccionar rápido cada vez que intentaba usar los pilares de fuego... y de alguna manera conseguir DESTRUIR LA MITAD DE SU SALUD SIN RECIBIR NINGÚN GOLPE.
Y esta vez no me hizo falta usar la Estrella Verde para curarme gracias a tanto daño recibido sin perder más de la mitad de mi salud total en el combate.
Ok entonces, ¿qué más?
Bueno, lo primero que me gustaría comentar es que, de nuevo, se me había pasado la Escopeta en la segunda misión - pero por suerte pude volver a donde tenía que estar y cogerla - aunque acabé buscando exactamente dónde porque no se me ocurrió usar la espada para romper la única pieza de decoración que parecía sospechosa. Pero bueno.
En segundo lugar, me gustaría hacer una mención honorífica a lo que probablemente sea lo más tonto del juego hasta ahora: Las misiones secretas.
Concretamente, las dos misiones secretas que me he encontrado en las que tienes que... aplastar 100 mini arañas. En la segunda me encontré incluso con la tarea de hacerlo sin usar armas.
Incluso dejan caer un orbe rojo cada una, así que aunque durante un rato me quedé atascado en la primera porque estaba usando el arma menos ideal para intentar hacerlo, también estaba cultivando orbes rojos, aunque de mala gana [definitivamente quería hacerlo, pero estaba atascado con el enfoque equivocado hasta que miré hacia arriba y descubrí un pequeño detalle obvio con mi arma de elección].
El tercer punto a destacar sería... esta cosa.
Aparecido tras usar el Orgullo de León en una puerta que lo pedía, había conseguido convertirlo en forma de esfera tras infligirle bastante daño... pero además de haber recibido yo mismo algo por el repentino ataque, no pensé en atacar a la esfera... así que se recompuso y luego acabó matándome. Volví a intentarlo y no perdí la oportunidad de atacarla... y al menos debilité bastante al enemigo hasta que se marchó y me dejó avanzar.
El final de este post viene del final de esta cuarta misión y de su jefe, que me sorprendió cuando salió de un espejo, abrió una puerta cerrada, le hizo un gesto a Dante para que saliera y luego SALIÓ CORRIENDO DE LA HABITACIÓN. Este tipo me retó a un duelo y quería unn lugar abierto para luchar.
Así que sí, una pelea contra este jefe que parece tener un conjunto de movimientos similar al tuyo - aparte de bloquear a menudo tus ataques y tener una fuerte bola de fuego propia para contrarrestar, pero Devil Trigger puede permitirte atravesar su defensa.
Pero cuando ganas, la escena posterior muestra al jefe dominándote, hasta que mira el amuleto [que el menú de pausa describe con los nombres de Dante y Vergil escritos en él... ten en cuenta que Vergil no ha sido visto en este juego, al menos hasta ahora], parece verse afectado por dicho amuleto y entonces escapa.
...Y hasta aquí mi experiencia con Devil May Cry. Tan genial como recordaba, pero también debería haber recordado que el juego no se anda con rodeos cada vez que te lanza un nuevo enemigo.
Creo que llegué hasta la misión 8 o 9 la última vez que jugué. Pero independientemente de lo lejos que llegara, sé que no llegué al jefe final, así que esta vez tendré el juego a la vista cuando pueda dedicarle más tiempo.
