I guess that what's left now is...well, leave the original review here, so...
It might have been over 2 months after @freakshow90's recommendation to see this movie due to the post he made reviewing it, but as that day I was actually left intrigued to see myself what this movie did to get this much prestige as well as references in other works, a week ago I finally gave it that chance.
So...yeah, this is a movie I decided to see specifically thanks to that review that left me so curious to get me truly prepared to see it, specially with the opportunity to watch it in a movie night that my brother and his best friend prepared as I happened to have the movie ready.
This time around, knowing that there are many reviews about the movie that speak about the story in itself, I thought on making this one with a little more unique but defined structure:
- The origin and legacy of the film
- How this silence provoked great terror at the time
- The noteworthy moments of when we watched the movie.
The origin and legacy of the film
The Silence of the Lambs is an adaptation of a 1988 novel, which is a sequel to the 1981 novel "Red Dragon"...but anyone who has researched these films will have found that this film came before the 2002 adaptation of Red Dragon...only there was an adaptation of Red Dragon before this one.
The movie "Manhunter" adapted that Red Dragon novel with a different cast before this one existed and came out in 1986...but at the time it was received mixed and didn't sell much in theaters. While it would become a cult film today, that failure at the time was what allowed a different studio to look to adapt the sequel to that novel...and needless to say, the results achieved between very precise direction and impeccable casting for the main characters gave it the status it has now.
And the strange thing is that I did some research on the rest of the movies, and while both Red Dragon and Manhunter are of good quality having been written before the "Hannibal explosion".... the novels and movies that came out after Silence of the Lambs became so iconic (2001's Hannibal, which seeks to explain what that titular character does after this movie, and Hannibal Rising, which attempts to explain the origin of this character) were received much more mixed in not having the subtlety in the machinations and violence of the titular antagonist along with the quality of the story.
Even after that came out both a TV series about Hannibal (2013) which apparently covers the events around Red Dragon but with different actors, and Clarice (2021) which is about what Clarice Starling does between the end of this film and that of Hannibal (2001).
But of course, besides the mark this character left to the point of earning those two sequel novels/movies and two TV series around the characters (although the Clarice one didn't have the rights to the Hannibal Lecter character...so you won't see or hear him mentioned there), there's also the amount of references this particular movie has had in other works. Just as Rambo, Terminator and Alien were so influential because of the popularity at the time they came out (the 80s), for this movie to do what it did in 1991, at a time when the first version of Street Fighter 2 was just coming out (to give you context as to how old it really is), it's no surprise to see why it's gotten so many references and parodies.
There's one in that particular video that came as a surprise to my knowledge after the movie thanks to my brother, but I'll tell you about that when the when we saw the movie section comes around.
How this silence instilled great terror in its time.
First imagine you are in that fateful year 1991.
The massive spread of the internet that would give way to so much desensitization to violence in most entertainment media has not yet happened, the knowledge of possible tropes in a work is nil...
...And you walk in to see, without much expectation other than that it's 18+, a movie with this poster.
Seeing Hannibal Lecter's level of intelligence compared to classic horror movie villains who were out to hunt and kill like uncontrolled monsters, plus how the theme of the serial killer Buffalo Bill is handled with his psychological profile (which we are shown both by observations of the protagonist and... details we see when we see this guy) and both how Clarice has to deal with Lecter's psychological tinkering to get clues to the whereabouts of that other serial killer and the things he manages to come up with not only by influencing her guide...but also the effect his dialogue seems to have on her by making her bring up bad memories from her childhood that he sees reflected in her present day.
...To say the least, this film comes loaded with a lot of subtlety and psychological themes, much higher level than a simple slasher, and how elegantly it executes this in both story and direction was practically unheard of. That it manages to be scary at times without resorting to jumpscares but rather psychological terror and moments that make you feel fear more for what you feel in the atmosphere is something you don't get much in films of this nature.
Other works with psychopaths with some subtlety or highly intelligent villains (Death Note, Monster, Breaking Bad, etc) did not exist, and Mortal Kombat along with the furor it caused with its violence for that time...it DID NOT exist, since this game came out in 1992. Even though the violence wasn't visible at all times, what you could see at that time (taking advantage also in the moments we didn't see anything just leave you with the implication of imagination, and the "show but don't tell" of things like Lecter's stories about his meals), along with the psychological effect of the story, was a gigantic bombshell in a pretty well executed way for those viewers of the time.
With that you can already understand that, while there are works of later years that may be comparable in theory and execution of similar things, this one got its prestige and its crown for being the first to do this and in such a remarkable way.
Our memories of the movie
With what I described above, it goes without saying that this movie is pretty good and has been analyzed ad nauseum by many other creators if you're looking to find more details imbued in this work, so now I bring you the moments in which, spoiler warned with spoilers for anyone interested in watching this movie blind if you haven't seen it before (if that's the case GO AND DO THAT NOW), my brother, his friend and I reacted while watching this movie.
When the mad Miggs, reprimanded in one of the cells where Lecter was held, does his... "magic trick", the three of us were immediately shocked and disgusted. Needless to explain why, but the friend reiterated how disgusted he was by that while my brother was also confused in laughter as to how that happened in the first place (I guess he didn't notice that crazy guy came with bird in hand before that)....
The tale of when Lecter ate a liver like a saucer. Iconic scene for obvious reasons, some black humor jokes came out from my brother and friend but we were clear of the commanding presence he establishes with that scene.
And speaking of the creepy psychopath, the call to Clarice that she received to be informed that this Miggs guy committed suicide because he heard night whispers from Lecter, made us go back the movie once to when they said that since we hadn't paid attention completely and were like "ya go who died"; I thought it was the detective that appeared earlier with her but then we understood that it obviously had to be that crazy guy being next to a cell with Lecter. ...and see how macabre that we were told in such a way that after previously seeing Lecter call Clarice to apologize in disgust for that event. An example of the "better implied than shown" of giving something to be terrified of Lecter with just a little story.
An unintentional funny moment (in our view, nothing more) to see Lecter watching a sermon on a TV outside his cell...it was his punishment for Miggs, and that when she left they would turn it up to full volume. At that point I think a joke question came out "Would you rather be in that cell for 8 hours or days...or live in Venezuela?" (we are from Venezuela, hence the joke). As funny as it is to say otherwise, the three of us were clear that being locked in there with the rest of the crazies would be to bite our tongues.

When Buffalo Bill starts dancing with his wig made out of the scalp of one of his victims almost naked until...uh...well. If you saw the movie, you'll know THAT scene I'm talking about. Simply put, we were completely stunned to see the absence of something. And the crazy thing is that for me it was like "ya ya go but if she was supposed to have that request rejected at the institutions...then but how-"
Clarice is blind-sided as Bill approaches her with night vision...and hears the barrel of his gun as he prepares to shoot her. Mutual gunfire, Bill dies and Clarice is left unharmed. Crazy for the three of us to see, but for our friend he also saw it as "very impossible" that he immediately heard the barrel and shot back to not even have a bullet. But hey, I don't mind artistic liberties for stuff like that 😎.
One of them said "can you imagine if the one taking the picture is Lecter?" when Clarice is being decorated for stopping Buffalo Bill...and it wasn't.
But when Lecter calls Clarice and we see what Lecter is actually doing...we see that he was ready to ambush Frederick Chilton, that doctor who screwed him over earlier, clear as day to turn him into soup...and the camera shot from the sky just stares at the two of them walking through the crowd until they can't be seen. End of the movie.
...And the moment that stood out the most for us, one that I have to recount outside of the list because of the length: Hannibal Lecter's escape.
The moment Lecter saw the pen next to Frederick and somehow took it away, only to later be keyed to make his escape in the new cage that was only secured by being handcuffed and having the guards bring him food (huge mistake), he broke free and beat them up...and after encountering a macabre play where we wondered how much time he had to do that with the decorations and lighting in the first place, they came across a surviving but badly wounded guard.
At that point I immediately said "THAT'S LECTER WITH THE GUARD'S FACE, THAT GUARD WAS ALREADY DEAD" because of that attack we saw, but the other two were betting that somehow he was going to slip away (taking on the entire squad of cops was impossible) or that he had already escaped. When they show the prisoner collapsed in the elevator, there they see that the one in there with the white shirt....
...was not Lecter...it was someone with his face ripped off.
Then the guard in the ambulance-.
The prediction of the century according to them, because somehow they didn't expect a move like that 😎 (it really seemed illogical to me that there was one left alive...and with that we saw with the other guard, I really could believe him doing that at all).

...Oh, and the only thing left to point out is that at the end of the movie, my brother said "Now I understand the reference in that Sam and Cat episode", to then show us that he was talking about an episode in that series that practically took the basic premise of this movie, even with a scene at the beginning that was like the entrance to see Lecter in a straitjacket...and the end of the episode when Lecter leaves behind someone else with his glasses and hat.
It's actually crazy to think they snuck obvious references to that in there, but if you saw the video of the references, I think it's more surprising to see that there are so many in different places.
Conclusion
Watch the movie.
It's worth it.

Habrán sido más de 2 meses después de ver la recomendación de @freakshow90 para ver esta película por el post que hizo reseñándola, pero con ese día que de verdad quedé intrigado en ver por mí mismo que hacía esta película como para conseguir tanto prestigio así como referencias en otras obras, hace una semana terminé finalmente dándole esa oportunidad.
Así que...sí, esta película es una que decidí ver específicamente gracias a una reseña que me dejó tanta curiosidad como para realmente proponerme a verlo, especialmente con la oportunidad de que mi hermano y su gran amigo decidieron hacer una noche de películas y la tenía a la mano.
En esta ocasión, conociendo que habrán muchas reseñas sobre la película que van sobre la trama en sí, pensé en hacerlo con una estructura un poco más única pero definida:
- El origen de la película y su legado
- Como este silencio infundió gran terror en su época
- Los recuerdos destacables de cuando vimos la película
El origen de la película y su legado
The Silence of the Lambs (localizado en español latino como El Silencio de los Inocentes) es una adaptación de una novela de 1988, que es una secuela de la novela "Red Dragon" de 1981...pero el que haya investigado de esta películas se habrá encontrado con que esta película fue primera que la adaptación de Red Dragon en 2002...solo que si hubo una adaptación de Red Dragon antes de esta.
La película "Manhunter" adaptó esa novela de Red Dragon con un elenco diferente antes de que existiera esta y salió en 1986...pero en su tiempo fue recibido de forma mixta y no vendió mucho en los cines. Mientras que se volvería un filme de culto hoy en día, ese fracaso en su tiempo fue lo que permitió que un estudio diferente buscara adaptar la secuela de esa novela...y sobra decir que los resultados conseguidos entre una dirección muy precisa y un elenco impecable para los personajes principales le dieron el estatus que tiene ahora.
Y lo extraño es que investigué del resto de las películas, y mientras que tanto Red Dragon como Manhunter son de buena calidad al ser escritas antes de la "explosión de Hannibal"...las novelas y películas que salieron después de que Silence of the Lambs se volviera tan icónica (Hannibal de 2001, que busca explicar que hace ese titular personaje después de esta película, y Hannibal Rising, que intenta explicar el origen de este personaje) fueron recibidos de manera mucho más mixta al no tener la sutileza en las maquinaciones y violencia del titular antagonista junto con la calidad de la historia.
Aún después de eso salieron tanto una serie de televisión sobre Hannibal (2013) que al parecer cubre los eventos alrededor de Red Dragon pero con actores diferentes, y Clarice (2021) que va sobre que hace Clarice Starling entre el final de esta película y la de Hannibal (2001).
Pero claro, además de la marca que dejó este personaje al punto de ganarse a pulso esas dos novelas/películas de secuelas y dos series de televisión alrededor de los personajes (aunque el de Clarice no tenía los derechos del personaje de Hannibal Lecter...así que no lo verán ni escucharán mencionado ahí), también esta la cantidad de referencias que ha tenido esta película en particular en otras obras. Así como Rambo, Terminator y Alien fueron tan influenciales por la popularidad en la época que salieron (los 80s), que esta película hiciera lo que hizo en 1991, en aquel tiempo que la primera versión de Street Fighter 2 apenas estaba saliendo (para darte contexto de que tan viejo en realidad es), no es de sorpresa ver el por qué se ha conseguido tantas referencias y parodias.
Hay uno en ese video en particular que salió de sorpresa para mi conocimiento después de la película gracias a mi hermano, pero les contaré de eso cuando llegue la sección de cuando vimos la película.
Como este silencio infundió gran terror en su época
Primero imagina que estás en ese fatídico año 1991.
Aún no ha sucedido propagación masiva del internet que diera paso a tanto insensibilización a la violencia en la mayoría de medios de entretenimiento, el conocimiento de tropos posibles en una obra es nulo...
...Y entras a ver, sin muchas expectativas fuera de que es para mayores de 18, una película con este cartel.
El ver el nivel de inteligencia de Hannibal Lecter comparado con villanos clásicos de películas de terror que eran de buscar y matar como monstruos sin control, además de cómo se lleva el tema del asesino serial Buffalo Bill con su perfil psicológico (que nos muestran tanto por observaciones de la protagonista y...detalles que vemos cuando vemos a este sujeto) y tanto como Clarice tiene que lidiar con el jugueteo psicológico de Lecter para obtener pistas del paradero de ese otro asesino serial como las cosas con las que logra dar no solo por la influencia en su guía...sino también el efecto que parece tener su diálogo en ella al hacerla sacar malos recuerdos de su infancia que el ve reflejado en su actualidad.
...Por decirlo de una forma, esta película viene cargado de bastante sutileza y temas psicológicos, muchísimo más alto nivel que un simple slasher, y como ejecuta esto de forma elegante en tanto la historia como la dirección eran algo prácticamente nunca jamás visto. Que logre dar miedo en momentos sin tener que recurrir en jumpscares sino en terror psicológico y momentos que hacen sentir miedo más por lo que se siente en el ambiente es algo que no se consigue mucho en películas de esta índole.
Otras obras con psicópatas cno sutileza o villanos de alta inteligencia (Death Note, Monster, Breaking Bad, etc) no existían, y Mortal Kombat junto con el furor que causó con su violencia para ese tiempo...TAMPOCO existía, ya que este juego salió en 1992. A pesar de que la violencia no era visible en todo momento, lo que si se podía ver en esa época (aprovechando también en los momentos que no veíamos nada solo dejarte la implicación de la imaginación, y el "muestra pero no cuentes" de cosas como las historias de Lecter sobre sus comidas), junto con el efecto psicológico de la historia, era un gigantesco bombazo de manera bastante bien ejecutada para esos espectadores de la época.
Con eso ya pueden entender que, mientras que hay obras de años posteriores que podrán ser comparables en la teoría y la ejecución de cosas similares, este obtuvo su prestigio y su corona por ser el primero en hacer esto y de una manera tan notable .
Nuestros recuerdos de la película
Con lo que describí anteriormente, sobra decir que esta película es bastante buena y ha sido analizada hasta el cansancio por muchos otros creadores si buscas encontrar más detalles imbuidos en esta obra, así que ahora les traigo los momentos en los que, advertido con spoilers para el que esté interesado en ver esta película a ciegas si no la has visto antes (si es el caso VE Y HAZ ESO AHORA), reaccionamos mi hermano, su amigo y yo, mientras vimos esta película.
Cuando el loco Miggs, reprendido en una de las celdas donde se encontraba Lecter, hace su..."truco de magia", los tres quedamos impactados y asqueados inmediatamente. Sobra explicar el porqué, pero el amigo reiteró el asco que le dio eso mientras que mi hermano quedó también confuso entre risas de cómo pasó eso en primer lugar (creo que no notó que ese loco venía con pájaro en mano antes de eso)...
El cuento de cuando Lecter se comió un hígado como un platillo. Escena icónica por obvias razones, salieron algo de chistes de humor negro de mi hermano y amigo pero estábamos claros de la presencia imponente que establece con esa escena.
Y hablando del psicópata asqueroso, la llamada a Clarice que recibió para ser informada de que ese tal Miggs se suicidó por escuchar susurros nocturnos de Lecter, nos hizo regresar la película una vez a cuando dijeron eso ya que no habíamos prestado atención por completo y estaban como que "ya va quien se murió"; yo pensaba que era el detective que aparecía antes con ella pero después entendimos que obvio tenía que ser ese loco al estar al lado de una celda con Lecter...y ver lo macabro que se nos dijera de tal forma eso tras anteriormente ver a Lecter llamar a Clarice para disculparse disgustado por ese suceso. Un ejemplo del "mejor implicado que mostrado" de dar algo con que aterrarse de Lecter solo con un pequeño cuento.
Un momento gracioso no intencional (a nuestro parecer nada más) al ver que Lecter viendo una prédica en un televisor fuera de su celda...era su castigo por lo de Miggs, y que cuando ella se fuera le subirían al máximo el volumen. En ese momento creo que salió una pregunta de chiste de "Te parecería mejor estar en esa celda por 8 horas o días...o vivir en Venezuela?" (somos de Venezuela, por algo el chiste). Por más gracioso que sea decir lo contrario, los tres estuvimos claros que estar encerrado ahí con el resto de locos sería para morderse la lengua.

Cuando Buffalo Bill empieza a bailar con su peluca hecha del cuero cabelludo de una de sus víctimas casi que desnudo hasta que...uh...bueno. Si vieron la película, sabrán ESA escena de la que hablo. En pocas palabras, quedamos completamente atónitos al ver la ausencia de algo. Y lo más loco es que para mí era como que "ya va pero si se supone que le rechazaron esa petición en las instituciones...entonces pero como-"
Clarice queda a ciegas mientras que Bill se le acerca con visión nocturna...y escucha el barril de su pistola cuando se prepara para dispararle. Disparos mutuos, Bill muere y Clarice queda intacta. Una locura para los tres de ver, pero para nuestro amigo también lo vió como "muy imposible" que escuchara inmediatamente el barril y disparara devuelta para no tener ni una bala. Pero hey, a mí no me molestan libertades artísticas para cosas así 😎
Uno de ellos dijo "te imaginas que el que está tomando la foto sea Lecter?" cuando Clarice está siendo condecorada por detener a Buffalo Bill...y no fue así.
Pero cuando Lecter llama a Clarice y vemos que está haciendo Lecter en realidad...vemos que estaba listo para emboscar a Frederick Chilton, ese doctor que le fastidió antes, clarísimo para convertirlo en sopa...y la toma de cámara desde el cielo solo se queda viendo a ambos caminando entre la multitud hasta que no se pueden ver. Fin de la película.
...Y el momento que más resaltó para nosotros, uno que tengo que contar fuera de la lista: El escape de Hannibal.
En el momento que Lecter vio el bolígrafo al lado de Frederick y de alguna forma se lo llevó, solo para que después fuera llave para lograr escapar en la nueva jaula que solo estaba asegurada por estar esposado y que los guardias le llevaran comida (gravísimo error), se liberara y los apaleara...y después de encontrarse con una obra macabra en la que nos preguntábamos que tanto tiempo tuvo para hacer eso con las decoraciones e iluminación en primer lugar, se encontraron con un guardia sobreviviente pero malherido.
En ese momento yo inmediatamente dije "ESE ES LECTER CON LA CARA DEL GUARDIA, ESE TIPO YA ESTABA MUERTÍSIMO" por ese ataque que vimos, pero los otros dos apostaban que de alguna forma se iba a escabullir (enfrentarse al escuadrón entero de policías era imposible) o que ya había escapado. Cuando muestran al prisionero colapsado en el elevador, ahí ven que el que estaba ahí adentro con la camisa blanca...
...no era Lecter...era alguien con la cara arrancada.
Entonces el guardia en la ambulancia-
La predicción del siglo según ellos, porque de alguna forma no se esperaron una jugada como esa 😎 (es que de verdad a mí me parecía ilógico que quedara uno vivo...y con eso que vimos con el otro guardia, me podía creer en absoluto esa jugada).

...Ah, y lo único que me queda por resaltar es que al final de la película, mi hermano dijo "Ahora entiendo la referencia en ese episodio de Sam y Cat", para entonces mostrarnos que hablaba de un episodio en esa serie que prácticamente tomaba la premisa básica de esta película, hasta con una escena al principio que era como la entrada a ver a Lecter con camisa de fuerza...y el final del episodio cuando Lecter se va detrás de alguien más con sus lentes y sombrero.
La verdad que es una locura pensar que escabulleron referencias obvias de eso ahí, pero si vieron el video de las referencias, creo que más sorprende ver que hay tantos en lugares diferentes.
Conclusión
Vean la película.
Vale la pena.
