Remember Super Mario Kart?
...Still don't enjoy how it plays?
Well, there is a game that while is similar in its basics and visuals, it is FAR easier to get a handle on both as a beginner and as a player fiending for a tough yet fairer challenge than Super Mario Kart.
But as I imply on the title, is the game that is often overlooked alongside Mario Kart 7 due to living in the shadow of the games that existed before [MK64 in this case, and DS/Wii in the case of MK7]. Mario Kart 7's case is more so because of Mario Kart 8 existing afterwards, but Super Circuit's case is due to how it very well is like a new version of Super Mario Kart.
Rest assured though, if you want to give this one a try, you will suffer far less than with Super Mario Kart. And at least you have the entire screen for yourself - even if it is still tiny due to the GBA screen.
Old-school gameplay, new-school commodities
The game wears the influence of Mario Kart 64, the game that came before, not only in how the character sprites are essentially downscaled from it [and so are the voices - although they are taken from the Japanese version which is why they sound different], but also in the item department.
Wanted to have Triple Red Shells to catch up with the pack? Maybe see more Star and Lightning items appear than in SMK where they are pretty sparse? They are yours - and since the bots here do NOT jump your green/red shells on a random whim, they are far more effective as weapons, especially the red shells as I'll get to later.
The bots also use the standard batch of items instead of having CPU-only specific items depending of the character...so you may see any bots showing up with Star as well as using red shells - but on the flipside, you won't have to worry bout Mario/Luigi appearing with a high chance of activating the Star on a whim or to see the track littered with fireballs, mini mushrooms, eggs or bananas.
The game is even lenient in the aspect of allowing you to [sometimes] outrun Red Shells and even the mythicval Blue Shell if you can keep driving ahead of them until they just despawn. Easier said and done depending of the track and speed, but I think it's the only official Mario Kart game where you even have a chance to counter it without an item or an extremely well-timed miniturbo.
Oh, and the game also has turn signs - something that wouldn't be seen in future titles but is appreciated in this game particularly due to the lower visibility from the visual style and GBA's resolution.
And to talk about the meat of the mechanics is something that I feel deserves to be in the section where I describe why this game is so much more forgiving and enjoyable out of the box than SMK.
This is NOT the first time I play this game, as I already had completed it before twice [once in the PSP, and once in the 3DS], this is actually the first time I play the game with a solid feel on the drifting - leading to an interesting journey through most cups in 150cc out of the box.
Super Mario Kart but refined
Before you rush to play this thinking that the handling is like MK64, nope, it is still slippery like SMK, and so is the drift which you can only hold in one direction without correcting.
However, if you are a beginner to this game and want to get through without too much stress about learning the drifts yet, tapping the accelerator repeatedly for higher traction on turns is still a trick that works here.
For those intrigued by SMK's style of drifts though, or even those that already have a fair share of practice with them, Mario Kart Super Circuit gives you two reasons to have way more room for using the drifts like a madman:
The road width in most tracks is way wider, so there's more room for error or preparing yourself for a drift compared to SMK where tracks can feel claustrophobic.
Unlike SMK, hitting a drift for enough time without running over off-road [or pressing the brakes] will give you a mini turbo a few seconds after go back to driving straight. It isn't as snappy as MK64, but at least you get something beyond a faster turn from using drifts. Neat, isn't it?
These two aspects are what made it surprisingly enjoyable to jump straight into 150cc in this game, compared to SMK where 100cc already could be a test of skill for anyone uninitiated and then 150cc just takes things to absurd extremes.
The game sometimes seems to be surprisingly merciful with items as well, as sometimes I would be in a pinch to catch up in the final lap and get two to three Triple Red Shell or Star items on my hands for me to do so.
But...there's a catch. If it really bothers you - which I recommend that it shouldn't...unless you are willing to grind your hands for those alone, but be warned that it's MUCH harder to do than in Mario Kart DS.
The challenges for the perfectionists
Super Circuit is the first game that introduced ranks in the Mario Kart series...including the Triple Star rank.
However, while you can get points for your rank with coins, mini-turbos from drifts, getting the rocket start and even using specific characters [most give you something - the only one that doesn't is Yoshi for some reason 😅], the game will also deduct points off you if you:
- Run too much time over offroad
- Let go of the accelerator for too long
- Using the brakes
- USING THE TRIPLE RED SHELLS AND STARS
- ...And of course, falling off, as well as retrying a course.
I think the only unexpected thing the game gives you points for...is being struck by Lightning. Interesting moment of self-awareness there with how you cannot dodge those at all, but since you CAN outrun the Blue Shell until it gives up if you drive well enough, a Blue Shell hit won't do the same for you.
Could be a fair challenge to aim in 50cc and even 100cc if you are confident enough on your track knowledge + drifts, but just like beating SMK in 150cc at all, doing that in 150cc demands an absurd amount of practice to basically drive all the tracks to perfection and even forcing you to ignore triple red shells or stars if you get them.
If you thought doing all of that was bad in the normal tracks though, try your size with the hidden Super Mario Kart tracks.
Cool bonus, tedious unlocking
See, if you complete a cup once and decide to revisit it again, finishing the cup with over 100 coins between all four races will unlock an Extra variant of that cup, which actually is four tracks from the original Super Mario Kart stuffed in a cup [there are five cups in MKSC, but since SMK had five tracks per cup instead of four, they are distributed in four tracks per cup].
...And I tried the Extra Special Cup for a taste of how those would go in 150cc with Super Circuit controls, but unfortunately I have to tell you...they are still noticeably small. So you better be ready to welcome back the nightmare of trying to stay ahead in thin roads when touching the edge of one will make you fall off instantly.
But I'd say that the worst part isn't even dealing with the tracks in 150cc [for the most part], but the fact you have to do that process for EVERY SINGLE SPEED OPTION IN THE GAME.
So if you go through the hassle of, say, beating Special Cup in 150cc once, then doing it again with 100 coins to unlock Extra Special Cup in 150cc, you don't get the cup unlocked in 50cc and 100cc.
That makes it a hassle progression wise whether you are used to the game or not: If you are, then you'll go through the 150cc cups for those but then you'll have to do it again in 100cc if you want to have a more comfortable time playing the Extra cups. And if you aren't used to the game yet, you could start with the 50cc cups...but then will have to do it again and again for 100cc and 150cc.
For as cool as the bonus tracks are to have in what's basically a tweaked version of the original game, why they made the unlocks like that is beyond me.
Conclusion
The tracks are more varied and lenient, the drifting has a bonus if you can use it succesfully, and the items are plentiful to help you out, so it is definitely a way more manageable to start with than Super Mario Kart. And a more comfortable experience for those who wanted to enjoy SMK's gameplay style but were thrown off by it's difficulty
But unlocking the bonus content will be tedious, and if you are a player who wants to get the absolute best rank in everything, you will have to grit your teeth to drive the cups into perfection if you really want those 3-Star ranks.
All in all though, it is a game that despite being overlooked because of essentially being Super Mario Kart 2, staying in the shadow of 64 and future games, it not only established additions that would be taken for future installments [Quick Run/Race against the AI outside of GP, Rank System for Cups, Retro Tracks], but also manages to improve on the gameplay and track design to be a game that you could comfortably play on the Game Boy Advance as it was intended whenever you learned to come to grips with it.
So...if you are willing to be patient with how it plays at first, then I would recommend it - even if you struggle with the controls as a beginner, you may be luckier here than in other Mario Kart games if the game feels like giving you items to make last second comebacks 😂

Pues bien, hay un juego que, si bien es similar en sus aspectos básicos y visuales, es MUCHO más fácil de manejar, tanto para un principiante como para un jugador que busca un reto duro pero más justo que Super Mario Kart.
Pero como insinúo en el tÃtulo, es el juego que a menudo se pasa por alto junto a Mario Kart 7 debido a que vive a la sombra de los juegos que existieron antes [MK64 en este caso, y DS/Wii en el caso de MK7]. El caso de Mario Kart 7 se debe más a la existencia posterior de Mario Kart 8, pero el de Super Circuit se debe a que es como una nueva versión de Super Mario Kart.
Aunque ten por seguro que si quieres darle una oportunidad a este, sufrirás mucho menos que con Super Mario Kart. Y al menos tienes toda la pantalla para ti, aunque siga siendo diminuta debido a la pantalla de la GBA.
Jugabilidad de la vieja escuela, comodidades de la nueva escuela
El juego lleva la influencia de Mario Kart 64, el juego que vino antes, no sólo en cómo los sprites de los personajes están esencialmente reducidos de él [y también las voces - aunque están tomadas de la versión japonesa y por eso suenan diferentes], sino también en el departamento de objetos.
¿QuerÃas tener el triple de caparazones rojos para alcanzar a la manada? ¿Quizá ver aparecer más objetos Estrella y Relámpago que en SMK, donde son bastante escasos? Son tuyos, y como aquà los robots NO te saltan los proyectiles verdes/rojos por capricho, son mucho más eficaces como armas, especialmente los proyectiles rojos, como explicaré más adelante.
Los bots también usan el lote estándar de objetos en lugar de tener objetos especÃficos de la CPU según el personaje... asà que puede que veas a algún bot aparecer con una estrella y usar caparazones rojos, pero por otro lado, no tendrás que preocuparte de que Mario/Luigi aparezcan con una alta probabilidad de activar la estrella por capricho o de ver la pista llena de bolas de fuego, mini champiñones, huevos o plátanos.
También cabe destacar que el juego tiene signos para curvas en pantalla - algo que no se verÃa en futuras entregas, pero se agradece tener aquà tanto por el estilo visual del juego como por la baja resolución de la GBA.
Y hablar del meollo de la mecánica es algo que creo que merece estar en la sección donde describo por qué este juego es mucho más indulgente y disfrutable desde el principio que SMK.
Esta NO es la primera vez que juego a este juego, pues ya lo habÃa completado antes dos veces [una en la PSP, y otra en la 3DS], esta es en realidad la primera vez que juego al juego con una sensación sólida en el derrape - lo que lleva a un viaje interesante a través de la mayorÃa de las copas en 150cc fuera de la caja.
Super Mario Kart pero refinado
Antes de que corras a jugar a esto pensando que el manejo es como el de MK64, nope, sigue siendo resbaladizo como SMK, y también lo es el derrape que sólo puedes mantener en una dirección sin corregir.
Sin embargo, si eres un principiante en este juego y quieres pasar sin estresarte demasiado por aprender los derrapes todavÃa, tocar el acelerador repetidamente para tener más tracción en las curvas sigue siendo un truco que funciona aquÃ.
Sin embargo, para los intrigados por el estilo de derrapes de SMK, o incluso para los que ya tienen una buena dosis de práctica con ellos, Mario Kart Super Circuit te da dos razones para tener mucho más margen para usar los derrapes como un loco:
La anchura de la carretera en la mayorÃa de las pistas es mucho mayor, por lo que hay más espacio para cometer errores o prepararse para un derrape en comparación con SMK, donde las pistas pueden resultar claustrofóbicas.
A diferencia del SMK, al derrapar durante el tiempo suficiente sin pasarte de la raya [o pisar el freno] recibirás un mini turbo unos segundos después de volver a conducir recto. No es tan rápido como en MK64, pero al menos consigues algo más que un giro más rápido al usar derrapes. Genial, ¿verdad?
Estos dos aspectos son los que hacen que resulte sorprendentemente agradable saltar directamente a 150cc en este juego, en comparación con SMK, donde 100cc ya podÃa ser una prueba de habilidad para cualquiera no iniciado y luego 150cc simplemente lleva las cosas a extremos absurdos.
El juego a veces parece ser sorprendentemente misericordioso también con los objetos, ya que a veces me veÃa en un aprieto para alcanzarme en la última vuelta y me encontraba con dos o tres objetos Triple Red Shell o Star en mis manos para poder hacerlo.
Pero... hay un truco. Si realmente te molesta -que te recomiendo que no lo haga... a no ser que estés dispuesto a machacarte las manos sólo por eso, pero te advierto que es MUCHO más difÃcil de hacer que en Mario Kart DS
Los retos para los perfeccionistas
Super Circuit es el primer juego que introdujo los rangos en la serie Mario Kart... incluido el rango de triple estrella.
Sin embargo, aunque puedes conseguir puntos para tu rango con monedas, mini-turbos de derrapes, consiguiendo el cohete de salida e incluso usando personajes especÃficos [la mayorÃa te dan algo - el único que no lo hace es Yoshi por alguna razón 😅], el juego también te restará puntos si:
- Corres demasiado tiempo fuera del asfalto
- Soltar el acelerador durante demasiado tiempo
- Usar los frenos
- USAR LOS TRIPLE CAPARAZONES ROJOS Y LAS ESTRELLAS
- ...Y por supuesto, caerte, asà como reintentar un recorrido.
Creo que lo único inesperado por lo que el juego te da puntos es por ser alcanzado por un rayo. Es un momento interesante de autoconciencia, ya que no puedes esquivarlos en absoluto, pero como PUEDES dejar atrás al proyectil azul hasta que se rinda si conduces lo suficientemente bien, un impacto de proyectil azul no te hará lo mismo.
PodrÃa ser un buen reto apuntar en 50cc e incluso en 100cc si tienes la suficiente confianza en tu conocimiento de la pista + derrapes, pero al igual que vencer a SMK en 150cc en absoluto, hacerlo en 150cc exige una cantidad absurda de práctica para conducir básicamente todas las pistas a la perfección e incluso te obliga a ignorar los caparazones rojos triples o las estrellas si los consigues.
Si pensabas que hacer todo eso era malo en las pistas normales, prueba tu tamaño con las pistas ocultas de Super Mario Kart.
Bonus guay, desbloqueo tedioso
Verás, si completas una copa una vez y decides volver a visitarla, terminar la copa con más de 100 monedas entre las cuatro carreras desbloqueará una variante Extra de esa copa, que en realidad son cuatro pistas del Super Mario Kart original metidas en una copa [hay cinco copas en MKSC, pero como SMK tenÃa cinco pistas por copa en vez de cuatro, están distribuidas en cuatro pistas por copa].
...Y probé la Copa Extra Especial para hacerme una idea de cómo irÃan en 150cc con controles de Supercircuito, pero por desgracia tengo que decirte... siguen siendo notablemente pequeñas. Asà que más vale que estés preparado para dar la bienvenida de nuevo a la pesadilla de intentar mantenerte en cabeza en carreteras finas cuando tocar el borde de una te hará caer al instante.
Pero yo dirÃa que lo peor ni siquiera es enfrentarse a las pistas en 150cc [en su mayor parte], sino el hecho de que tienes que hacer ese proceso para CADA OPCIÓN DE VELOCIDAD DEL JUEGO.
Asà que si te tomas la molestia de, por ejemplo, superar la Copa Especial en 150cc una vez, y luego volver a hacerlo con 100 monedas para desbloquear la Copa Extra Especial en 150cc, no consigues desbloquear la copa en 50cc y 100cc.
Eso lo convierte en un lÃo de progresión tanto si estás acostumbrado al juego como si no: Si lo estás, entonces pasarás por las copas de 150cc para esas pero luego tendrás que volver a hacerlo en 100cc si quieres pasártelo mejor jugando a las copas Extra. Y si aún no estás acostumbrado al juego, podrÃas empezar por las copas de 50cc... pero luego tendrás que hacerlo una y otra vez por las de 100cc y 150cc.
Por muy chulas que sean las pistas extra en lo que es básicamente una versión retocada del juego original, no entiendo por qué han hecho los desbloqueos asÃ.
Conclusión
Las pistas son más variadas e indulgentes, el derrape tiene una bonificación si puedes usarlo con éxito, y los objetos son abundantes para ayudarte, asà que definitivamente es un modo más manejable para empezar que Super Mario Kart. Y una experiencia más cómoda para aquellos que querÃan disfrutar del estilo de juego de SMK pero se sentÃan desanimados por su dificultad.
Pero desbloquear el contenido adicional será tedioso, y si eres un jugador que quiere conseguir el mejor rango absoluto en todo, tendrás que apretar los dientes para conducir las copas a la perfección si realmente quieres esos rangos de 3 estrellas.
En definitiva, se trata de un juego que, a pesar de pasar desapercibido por ser esencialmente Super Mario Kart 2, a la sombra de 64 y futuros juegos, no sólo estableció adiciones que se tomarÃan para futuras entregas [Carrera Rápida/Carrera contra la IA fuera de GP, Sistema de Rangos para Copas, Pistas Retro], sino que también se las arregla para mejorar la jugabilidad y el diseño de las pistas para ser un juego que podrÃas jugar cómodamente en Game Boy Advance tal y como fue concebido siempre que aprendieras a manejarlo.
Asà que... si estás dispuesto a tener paciencia con cómo se juega al principio, entonces te lo recomiendo; incluso si tienes problemas con los controles como principiante, puede que aquà tengas más suerte que en otros juegos de Mario Kart si el juego tiene ganas de darte objetos para hacer remontadas en el último segundo 😂.
