While SNK is definitely most known nowadays for their fighting game output, they weren't one of the top dogs in the arcade industry in the 90s for nothing: While their Neo Geo hardware as a console was very expensive, it was innovative in giving the option of players literally buy an arcade board in the shape of a console, which meant that any game that came out on that board potentially would be avaliable to purchase to have a perfect version of that game at home. While this doesn't sound impressive nowadays, this was before emulation had their incredible rise around the world in development andd usage, and consoles around that time had struggles to keep up with the arcade games of that time.
This game was developed by Nazca in 1996, shortly before merging with SNK, and was one of the flagship titles avaliable for the platform/board that showcased the incredible power of the Neo Geo, with smoothly animated sprites and incredibly detailed backgrounds that are still amazing to look at to this day, and a fierce amount of enemies and bullets from all places, making the game actually have occasional slowdowns when the action is too intense. However, not only the game is brimming with a lot of personality with the enemy soldiers freaking out when you show up, huge vehicles trying to get you, and the prisoners you rescue saluting you only to start running away inmediately after, but also those slowdowns that you occasionally see might be of help when you are getting overwhelmed...omething that will definitely happen a lot.
This game is brimming with essence of what is cool in arcade games, but also what was their main purpose in first place: Incredibly appealing presentation without the need of a complex story, a lot of fun action and explosions...and an extremely fierce challenge to overcome for the unprepared. Make no mistake, Metal Slug might as well be as infamous in difficulty as SNK's bosses in their fighting games with how much stuff it throws at you while only having 3 lives per credit (by defualt) and being a one-hit wonder, and while you can credit-feed as much as you need nowadays to see all the cool stuff the game has to offer, the challenge of beating this game with limited credits or with a single credit at all (let alone without dying once) is extremely more fierce that my experience with NES Contra. While you can inmediately respawn with another credit where you were, the density of enemies attacking you from all places will put any hardcore challengers to their absolute limits.
However, a casual playthrough will be highly entertaining from how much stuff you have to fight against as well as some occasional platforming and watching everything unfold in chaos by your own hands, a hardcore playthrough will have a very steep curve of challenge...but have an impossibly high feeling of satisfaction as a pay-off from your insane amount of practice, and overall it is amazing how much polish in the mechanics, the graphics and the music this game has for being the very first title in the series. Everything looks smoothly animated and crisp, there are weapons you can find like a Shotgun, the Heavy Machine Gun, and the famous "ROCKET LAWNCHAIR", as well as the titular Metal Slug that you can ride, and it is absolute chaos from start to end during the hour you will spend playing this game. Even if you aren't going to practice clearing this game with a perfect run, it is absolutely worth trying it out for getting everything to explode with your guns, the comedic yet impressively smooth animations, and just going for a big old blast of a time no matter how much you die with infinite credits (and still have the incentive to aim for runs where you use less and less continues until you somehow manage the entire journey without using one).
Seriously, if you never have played this game before, you should. It isn't regarded as an absolute classic by those who have for nothing. And now, with all of this said...

Este juego rebosa la esencia de lo que mola en los juegos arcade, pero también de lo que era su principal objetivo en primer lugar: Una presentación increíblemente atractiva sin necesidad de una historia compleja, un montón de acción y explosiones divertidas... y un reto extremadamente duro de superar para los no preparados. No te equivoques, Metal Slug podría tener una dificultad tan infame como la de los jefes de SNK en sus juegos de lucha, con la cantidad de cosas que te lanza mientras sólo tienes 3 vidas por crédito (por defecto) y siendo un juego de un solo golpe, y aunque hoy en día puedes cargarte de créditos todo lo que necesites para ver todas las cosas chulas que ofrece el juego, el reto de superar este juego con créditos limitados o con un solo crédito (y mucho menos sin morir ni una sola vez) es extremadamente más feroz que mi experiencia con Contra de NES. Aunque puedes reaparecer inmediatamente con otro crédito en el lugar en el que estabas, la densidad de enemigos que te atacan desde todos los lugares pondrá a cualquier retador empedernido en sus límites absolutos.
Sin embargo, una partida casual será muy entretenida por la cantidad de cosas contra las que tienes que luchar, así como algunas plataformas ocasionales y ver cómo todo se convierte en un caos por tus propias manos, una partida hardcore tendrá una curva de desafío muy empinada... pero tendrá una sensación de satisfacción imposiblemente alta como recompensa por tu insana cantidad de práctica, y en general es increíble la cantidad de pulido en la mecánica, los gráficos y la música que tiene este juego para ser el primer título de la serie. Todo tiene un aspecto animado y nítido, hay armas que puedes encontrar como la escopeta, la ametralladora pesada y la famosa "ROCKET LAWNCHAIR", así como el Metal Slug titular que puedes montar, y es un caos absoluto de principio a fin durante la hora que pasarás jugando a este juego. Incluso si no vas a practicar este juego con una carrera perfecta, vale la pena probarlo para conseguir que todo explote con tus armas, las animaciones cómicas pero impresionantemente suaves, y simplemente pasar un buen rato sin importar cuánto mueras con los créditos infinitos (y aún así tener el incentivo de apuntar a carreras en las que usas menos y menos continues hasta que de alguna manera logras el viaje entero sin usar uno).
