By chances of fate, thanks to a friendly fellow I stumbled upon in a Quake Live stream, not only I had got gifted that game, but also as apparently he checked my wishlist and immediately thought BASED, he also sent me Guilty Gear Strive.

So yeah, finally I'm playing this game on my PC properly, both going through a quick spin on the classic Arcade mode, and then proceeding to that so well known online mode where you can throw hands with other people around the world with smooth rollback netcode.

But here's the catch:

My humble AMD Radeon HD 6570 needs some real help to leverage this new game to run well...and by help I mean using all the lowest settings possible, and both a config to make things look more pixelated and a potato stage mod.

And that's how you get the thumbnail: From expectations to my experience. Guilty Gear Strive on the GBA.

Jokes aside, the saving grace of doing this in the first place is that the game is still recognizable well enough below the few pixels you decide to allow yourself while having the performance it needs to...be playable. Or at least for my simple Sol Badguy playing brain.

It definitely looks rough but still playable- got to experiment with tweaking the resolution scale option as well but I think I had it on nearly 50 while running the game at 640x480. In any case, I did take way more screenshots of this in action, but if I only used a few, its because you might tell how it isn't easy to see anything if you don't know how the game looks normally.

Arcade Mode Adventures

First thing I did was to give a run to the Arcade mode, and I don't know if it is the performance, previous game updates or how I have 8GB of RAM now, but compared to when I had borrowed the game from a buddy to try it home last time, the loading times weren't taking up more than 20 seconds, which is nice for an Unreal Engine 4 game.

Looking up how it works, it seems that you can shift down to Normal and Hard difficulties as you play if you lose a round in your first match [This permanently puts you in Normal the rest of the run], or if you won both rounds, you're left in Extreme difficulty but get bumped down to Hard if you win the match with one round lost.

Though if you want to cheese the system...

! [how to cheese] It only bumps you down if you finish a match with one round lost. But if you lose both rounds? You can rematch and still stay on Extreme difficulty as long as you win that match without losing a round.

All of this is since you can normally have a two-versus-one fight against the Stage 8 boss with the first rival character you fought at the start, which you'll need as Nagoriyuki in Stage 8 is just built different than his playable version: The character has a Blood Rage mode that players normally are intended to avoid, as while it increases damage, it also steadily drains your health while active.

But of course, this version does NOT lose health, so it can trigger that without penalty.

But if you stay in Extreme all the way, not only you fight that first character again at Stage 7, but you also fight Stage 8's boss alone.

! [Hidden Spoiler Text] And there's a secret Stage 9 boss if you beat that without losing a round. Blood Rage is active FOR THE WHOLE TIME, so you're essentially fighting a bona-fide SNK boss character that can delete you in three hits and can even survive several Potemkin Busters in a row. The only saving grace to even get to this fight is that apparently the rematch trick still works here, so you can retry Stage 8 as much as you need to get here. You'll need some real luck to do that...and then do this.

All-in-all though, standard Arcade Mode experience, even if barebones on anything like special character endings (all what you get and varies depending of how you end it are just in-game dialogues between characters). At least had more to offer than what Tekken 7's arcade mode did.

My First Online Odyssey

So after the Arcade Mode, I jumped into the online tutorial, played against the AI the tutorial forces you to fight before getting into actual lobbies, and from there I was dropped into Floor 6.

Floors work in that you can only play in a lobby of your level or higher, but not any lower. So that meant that I could have tried playing on Floor 10 immediately if I was in need of an instant hubris check...but at least at that moment, I was not able to play in Floor 5 or below.

At least until I ended up 0-3 against this Anji player and got Floor 5's doors open for me.

...And then I played against a Baiken player, and got Floor 4 open while I was only through one out of the three matches I lost there.

But I hadn't realized that I had stayed in Floor 5 after that when I kept looking for matches, and ended up beating a Johnny who for some reason wasn't jumping over my Heavy Mob Cemetery super from Sol (a huge leap that does huge damage, like Akuma's Raging Demon...and also as easily to avoid with a jump if you pay attention) and actually disconnected after the second match.

Then there was this Happy Chaos player who had the decency of not ragequit midway through...but also ended up being the first player I was able to finally get a 3-0 against. I still got some funny moments with HMC 😂

I can at least confirm that the netcode is as solid as people said it was, which is great for how this was a high-profile release back in the day that got torn down by the public when it was initially not planned to ship with rollback netcode. And today, its likely that the adoption of rollback from many AAA devs is thanks to Strive's success due to it.

Bromas aparte, la gracia salvadora de hacer esto en primer lugar es que el juego sigue siendo reconocible lo suficientemente bien por debajo de los pocos píxeles que decidas permitirte mientras tiene el rendimiento que necesita para... ser jugable. O al menos para mi simple cerebro de Sol Badguy.

Aventuras en Modo Arcade

Lo primero que hice fue darle una vuelta al modo Arcade, y no se si es el rendimiento, las actualizaciones anteriores del juego o que ahora tengo 8GB de RAM, pero comparado con la ultima vez que me presto el juego un colega para probarlo en casa, los tiempos de carga no tardaban mas de 20 segundos, lo cual esta bien para un juego Unreal Engine 4.

Mirando cómo funciona, parece que puedes pasar a las dificultades Normal y Difícil a medida que juegas si pierdes una ronda en tu primera partida [Esto te pone permanentemente en Normal el resto de la partida], o si ganas ambas rondas, te quedas en dificultad Extrema pero bajas a Difícil si ganas la partida con una ronda perdida.

Aunque si quieres engañar al sistema...

! [Sólo te baja si terminas una partida con una ronda perdida. ¿Pero si pierdes los dos asaltos? Puedes revancha y todavía permanecer en dificultad Extrema siempre y cuando ganes ese combate sin perder una ronda.

Todo esto se debe a que normalmente puedes tener un combate de dos contra uno contra el jefe de la fase 8 con el primer personaje rival con el que luchaste al principio, que necesitarás ya que Nagoriyuki en la fase 8 está construido de forma diferente a su versión jugable: El personaje tiene un modo Furia Sangrienta que normalmente los jugadores deben evitar, ya que, aunque aumenta el daño, también drena tu salud de forma constante mientras está activo.

*Pero, por supuesto, esta versión NO pierde salud, así que puede activarlo sin penalización.

Pero si te quedas en Extreme hasta el final, no sólo luchas contra ese primer personaje de nuevo en la Etapa 7, sino que también luchas contra el jefe de la Etapa 8 solo.

! [Y hay un jefe secreto en la fase 9 si lo superas sin perder una ronda. La Furia de Sangre está activa TODO EL TIEMPO, así que básicamente estás luchando contra un personaje jefe de SNK que puede eliminarte en tres golpes e incluso sobrevivir a varios Potemkin Busters seguidos. La única salvación para llegar a este combate es que, al parecer, el truco de la revancha sigue funcionando aquí, así que puedes reintentar la fase 8 tanto como necesites para llegar hasta aquí. Necesitarás mucha suerte para hacerlo... y luego haz esto.

En general, una experiencia estándar en el modo Arcade, aunque escasa en cuanto a finales especiales de los personajes (todo lo que consigues y varía en función de cómo lo termines son diálogos entre personajes). Al menos tenía más que ofrecer que el modo arcade de Tekken 7.

Mi primera odisea online

Después del modo Arcade, me metí en el tutorial online, jugué contra la IA contra la que te obliga a luchar el tutorial antes de entrar en las salas reales, y desde ahí me dejaron en la planta 6. Las plantas funcionan de forma que sólo puedes jugar en tu nivel o superior, pero no en ninguno inferior.

Así que eso significaba que podría haber intentado jugar en la Planta 10 de inmediato si necesitaba una comprobación instantánea de mi arrogancia... pero al menos en ese momento, no podía jugar en la Planta 5 o inferior.

Al menos hasta que acabé 0-3 contra este jugador de Anji y conseguí que me abrieran las puertas de la Planta 5.

...Y luego jugué contra un jugador de Baiken, y consiguió que se abrieran las puertas de la Planta 4 mientras yo sólo pasaba por una de las tres partidas que perdí allí.

Pero no me había dado cuenta de que me había quedado en la Planta 5 después de eso cuando seguí buscando partidas, y acabé ganando a un Johnny que por alguna razón no saltaba por encima de mi Heavy Mob Cemetery super de Sol (un salto enorme que hace un daño enorme, como el Raging Demon de Akuma... y también igual de fácil de esquivar con un salto si prestas atención) y realmente se desconectó después de la segunda partida.

Luego estaba este jugador de Happy Chaos que tuvo la decencia de no ragequit a mitad de partida... pero también terminó siendo el primer jugador contra el que pude finalmente conseguir un 3-0. Aún así tuve algunos momentos divertidos con HMC 😂

Al menos puedo confirmar que el netcode es tan sólido como la gente decía que era, lo cual es genial por cómo este fue un lanzamiento de alto perfil en su día que fue destrozado por el público cuando inicialmente no estaba previsto que saliera con el netcode rollback. Y hoy en día, es probable que la adopción del rollback por parte de muchos desarrolladores AAA sea gracias al éxito de Strive gracias a él.
