So yesterday I tried out the new beat-em-up by Tribute Games and DotEmu of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which had been hyped a lot on the internet thanks to being an awaited new sequel to the first classic arcade beat-em-ups of the franchise (which were made by old Konami) with smoothly animated and polished sprites, a killer soundtrack being made by Tee Lopes himself (most notably known for working on the Sonic Mania soundtrack) and even 6-player support! While the game offered a Story mode that saved between stages and allowed you to upgrade your character, I ended up playing through the Arcade mode, which sets it up like a classic arcade beat-em-up with a long start-to-end experience, lives and only 5 continues...and it was pretty fun!
The game was peppered with a good amount of variety of enemies from the Foot Clan that look the same but with different colors actually can be different to deal with from the weapons they wield (which also matches with their colors, like blue and white katana users that can block your attacks, black ninjas that can throw kunais...and even red dudes that shoot PLUNGERS at you), pizza monsters, golems, and of course many of the villains seen on the TMNT franchise showing up as bosses. There's also fun details like how many of the common enemies in these levels are seen doing stuff like working at desks, being at a pizzeria, playing on a Game Boy; its funny to see them like that as well as how they ditch whatever they're doing to attack you (like the ones at the office flipping their desks and throwing their ties, and the fast food workers throwing their hats away to jump into the gameplay plane).
As I played in Arcade mode, my "Ninja Power" meter was always limited to one, but I still could manage using the basic attacks, the backflip button (that lets you make an attack from it), and the super attack that uses one bar of Ninja Power to do a powerful attack that can get anyone off you. However, you can use either refill the meter by attacking enemies (but it will get emptied if you get hit and had not finished filling it yet) or simply by taunting, which while lets you vulnerable (and most enemies will NOT let you finish the taunt if there's anyone nearby), it instantly fills a one bar of the meter, so taunting anytime if the enemy/boss is stunned, is doing an attack that you can stay away from safely, or if there are no enemies nearby, is always useful to get back a powerful attack. And I have to admit that its a pretty inventive way of implementing these, compared to the usual "drain your health" when using a special in other beat-em-ups, even in all Streets of Rage games since the first one (though in 3 and Remake you can use it without penalty as long as your bar is full, and you can get your health back in 4 if you play well enough).
While there is a variety of basic moves and a handy accessibility of the special attacks (under the right conditions), as well as how you can keep juggling a defeated enemy for a long time and combos are only broken if you get hit by anything (which means that if you defeat an enemy, and spend a while doing nothing but start attacking another enemy, the combo number you had from beating the previous enemy stays and keeps increasing), it definitely can be a bit basic mechanic-wise from the reliance of having your trusty special avaliable to get off annoying enemies and not being able to dish out huge damage from combos like in Streets of Rage 4...but it is definitely an amazing love letter to the classic TMNT beat-em-ups (and easier to pick-up than the arcade TMNT Turtles in Time), and as I mentioned before, you can play with up to 6 players, so if a beat-em-up with two players is already double the fun, imagine with six players! Oh, and if you get knocked out in co-op, a buddy can revive you with half of your health.
Even if the gameplay might be a bit shallow after taking a deep look at it, the presentation is what makes this such a compelling package, from the aforementioned Tee Lopes soundtrack (the credits were so fun to listen), to the colorful spritework and how this is another game that sends you back to the simpler times without microtransactions, fixation on hyper-realistic graphics and unfinished games getting patched up over the years. And on the note of content, it was surprisingly long for a beat-em-up as well, having a whopping 16 levels to fight through (which was more noticeable as, again, I was playing in Arcade mode, so I had to do it all at once).
It would definitely be cool to give this game another shot in Story mode (which would also be less of an endurance test by being able to save between each stage) and specially with more people, but even then, TMNT Shredder's Revenge is a great beat-em-up that once again solidifies the big bombastic return of beat-em-ups into the spotlight of gaming, just a year after the DLC of Streets of Rage 4 released, and days before another new beat-em-up called Final Vendetta released. And in the note of challenge, playing through the Normal difficulty in Arcade mode was a tough but fair challenge and could actually beat the game on my last continue! Cowabunga!
