...But what if there was a game where you didn't need all that mystical mambo but still sped things up with a flashy look?
No, I'm not talking about Mario Golf, I'd need more experience to talk about Mario Golf.
Neo Turf Masters for the NeoGeo (also known as Big Tournament Golf) is an arcade game that manages to do many unthinkable things: A golf game that perfectly matches the fast-paced theme of an arcade game with its sound design and gameplay, with controls even simpler to use than Mario Golf...and therefore, it turns out to be much more fun even for people with no interest in golf at all!
At the content level, you have 6 golfers with different stats and 4 different 18-hole groups. As soon as you start playing, you just have to measure with the power bar once the strength of the shot, and again with the height bar to determine the vertical angle of your shot (plus in some cases you need to be precise not to miss the shot completely). You can make a curved shot adjustment with the extra buttons and change the club you are going to use for the shot, but even without knowing these aspects it is still possible to enjoy the basics of Golf:
Hit it hard until it hits the hole, don't land in a bad spot (rough, sand, and out of bounds), and always try to finish as fast as possible!
The presentation adds to the simplified gameplay: While it may be a bit odd as presented compared to full 3D games, besides running on a NeoGeo, it's quite colorful and concise along with the golfers having particular reactions to each score you get on a hole. The spectacular sound design also helps with the shots sounding with great impact, the fantastic music to be expected from a gem on the NeoGeo board, and the victory tunes for every Birdie you get, or even better, an Eagle; as hard as they are to get, with one you'll be celebrating, the music will be celebrating, and the golfer will definitely be celebrating ðŸ¤
And while it makes for a good individual challenge game for a change of pace compared to other games, the sauce is extra spicy if you get to compete with someone in a versus game, where victory goes to the one who gets the most points advantage for each hole they finish first over the other...although the funniest part comes when the two are evenly matched just by what you see after that.
There's not much I could say about the game for the way it is, but that's exactly why I'd recommend this game to pass some time or even surprise challenge a friend to see who gives the best shots, thanks to how compact it is throughout. And it's easy to get a few good laughs out of here, whether it's by either of you hitting an amazing shot by complete luck (kind of like a Hole in One; here it's not as easy as it might seem)...or when it all turns into a complete mutual disaster that ultimately results in both of you being level; if no one wins, no one loses.
So...don't think too much about what the game might be, just try it out sometime (especially with someone else); it's definitely going to be surprisingly entertaining for what you'd expect for a Golf game, which happens to be perfect for pretty much anyone skill-wise...if you don't happen to be a secret master of Neo Turf Masters, of course.

...Pero y si hubiera un juego donde no necesitaras todo ese mambo mÃstico y que a la vez acelerara las cosas con un aspecto llamativo?
No, no estoy hablando de Mario Golf, necesitarÃa más experiencia para hablar de Mario Golf.
Neo Turf Masters para la NeoGeo (también conocido como Big Tournament Golf) es un juego de arcade que logra hacer muchas cosas impensables: Un juego de golf que calza perfecto con la temática rápida de un juego arcade con su diseño de sonido y de jugabilidad, con controles aún más simples de usar que el Mario Golf...y por lo tanto, resulta ser mucho más divertido hasta para personas sin interés alguno en el golf!
A nivel de contenido, tienes 6 golfistas con estadÃsticas diferentes y 4 grupos de 18 hoyos diferentes. Apenas empiezas a jugar, solo tienes que medir con la barra de potencia una vez la fuerza del golpe, y otra vez con la barra de altura para determinar el ángulo vertical de tu tiro (además de en algunos casos requerir ser preciso para no fallar el tiro por completo). Puedes hacer un ajuste de tiro curveado con los botones extra y cambiar el palo que vas a usar para el tiro, pero aún sin conocer estos aspectos sigue siendo posible disfrutar de lo más básico del Golf:
Dale duro hasta que llegue al hoyo, no caigas en mal lugar (pasto rústico, arena, y out of bounds), y siempre intenta terminar lo más rápido posible!
La presentación le da el toque especial a la jugabilidad simplificada: Mientras que puede ser algo raro como es presentado comparado con juegos en completo 3D, además de funcionar en una NeoGeo, es bastante colorido y conciso junto con los golfistas teniendo reacciones particulares por cada resultado que consigas en un hoyo. El diseño de sonido espectacular también ayuda con los tiros que suenan con gran impacto, la música fantástica de esperarse de una joya en la placa NeoGeo, y las tonadas de victoria por cada Birdie que consigas, o aún mejor, un Eagle; con lo dificil que son de conseguir, con uno estarás celebrando, la música estará celebrando, y el golfista definitivamente estará celebrando ðŸ¤
Y mientras que hace como un juego de reto individual bueno para un cambio de ritmo comparado a otros juegos, la salsa es extra picante si consigues competir con alguien en una partida versus, en el que la victoria será para el que consiga más puntos de ventaja por cada hoyo en el que terminen primero encima del otro...aunque lo más gracioso llega a ser cuando los dos quedan iguales solamente por lo que ves después de eso.
No hay mucho que podrÃa contar del juego por la forma que es, pero es exactamente por eso porqué recomendarÃa este juego para pasar un rato o hasta retar de sorpresa a un amigo para ver quien da los mejores tiros, gracias a lo compacto que es en todo. Y es fácil sacar unos buenos momentos de risa de aquÃ, sea por alguno de los dos logrando un tiro increÃble por completa suerte (algo asà como un Hoyo en Uno; aquà no es tan fácil como podrÃa parecer)...o cuando todo se vuelve un completo desastre mutuo que al final resulta en ambos quedando nivelados; si nadie gana, nadie pierde.
Asà que...no pienses mucho en que puede ser el juego, solo pruébalo algún dÃa (especialmente con alguien más); definitivamente va a ser sorprendentemente entretenido para lo que esperarÃas para un juego de Golf, lo cual resulta ser perfecto para prácticamente cualquier persona sin importar su habilidad...si no resultas ser un maestro secreto de Neo Turf Masters, claro.
