Super Mario Bros games always had a 2 Player option since the original Mario Bros, but unlike that Mario Bros game that could have two players at once without issues since it was a single screen, Super Mario Bros. and onwards were designed as single-player platformers where rather than being confined to one screen, Mario would run through bigger horizontal levels as the screen scrolls through.
So what is the 2 Player option in this game then? Its done by passing turns when the other player dies. It is like having one playthrough that is paused when the first player dies and then the second player is allowed to play with their controller and as long as they can until they die.
It was quite fancy for the time as it allowed the "pass-around" gameplay except with each player being allowed to keep their own progres rather than sharing a single Mario (as if Mario died at 1- and Luigi was able to play until 4-2...then Luigi would return to 4-2 while Mario has to play 1-1 again unless he runs out of lives), but it obviously it isn't the simultaneous two-player action that most would expect nowadays.
This would stay as such until New Super Mario Bros. Wii came in and added four players at the same screen as a selling point after taking the base of the original NSMB for DS and using the bigger screen size for that. But any games before that originally will only let you play by turns if it has a 2 Player option.
At least until someone makes a hack for simultaneous two players, like in today's occasion.

...Well, it is exactly whats advertised: Both players are at the old Super Mario Bros at the same time, which is pretty funny in itself, but this goofy blessing comes with a big curse.
If either player dies at any point, both restart the level. So yeah, whoever kicks the bucket is bringing the other one too, though only one player will lose a life.
Speaking of lives, each player has their own pool of lives, and if they run out...well, fetch some popcorn to watch your friend playing alone through whatever remains of the game; unless they die as fast as you did.
That's probably the biggest caveat of this hack, which while feels pretty much in line with the level of fairness these old games had (very little), it can be sort of jarring to have your friend lose all their lives not only resetting the stage for you, but also leaving you at a standard solo playthrough. Then again, it is a hack on a NES game after all, so its not that it could replicate what NSMBWii does with the players respawning without restarting the level.
But I definitely was laughing a lot with my friend when I tried this dumb idea...and at the end of the day that is what matters the most when tagging along with a buddy, don't you think?
