This is not the first time I try the idea, but this certainly fared better than that last time I did. A short introduction this time around, but it is what it sounds like:
Using your phone as a controller - specifically, using the gyroscope to move an emulated joystick...hence, using it as a sort of steering wheel for arcade racers.
How does it work
Monect is actually an app to control in general your PC with the phone - including virtual keyboards and mouse options. But conveniently, it also has the support for customizable layouts to create virtual gamepads on your PC.
And it somehow has been the most reliable option for that purpose than any other gamepad app I've seen for Android.
While there are several included layouts, including a default Xbox 360 controller one that creates a virtual X360 controller on your PC so that it can be picked up by any games, you may have guessed the reason I tried this one out from the title.
As it supports mapping the gyroscope to a joystick, I wanted to see how certain arcade racers fared with it, this being the closest I would have to playing those with an actual steering wheel as intended. But of course, the most optimal way to do this is to do your own custom layouts for placing the buttons [I may publish mine somewhere].
In the three games I'm showcasing this with I used different setups: A simple Accel + Brake one for WMMT3, an Accel + Brake + 4 Gear buttons for Daytona [first screenshot], and a special one for SEGA Rally using a slider for the throttle instead of a button [second screenshot].
The switch at the bottom is what enables/disables the gyroscope feature, so I have switch that on when playing.
The Wangan test
Remember when I talked about Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3?
Yeah, that's the first game I tried it with, not only because the high speed driving on highways felt like a perfect fit for testing subtle steering, but on top of that, I found out about this because of another WMMT player that mentioned it.
And as the first game I tried out with Monect, I recorded the way the inputs looked in joy.cpl while playing just to have that on record as I swerved on the highways with it.
While it was a bit finicky to get a hold of at first, it was super cool to fight tooth and nail through races in the story mode and getting through traffic at high speeds with it.
It definitely made me realize how different the experience is with tilt steering (and I'd assume with a wheel too, especially an FFB one) as you have to constantly keep your hands steady to keep the car straight, unlike when play with a keyboard where you can tap the keys for slight turns and do nothing to keep a perfectly straight line.
Added a nice perspective on how the actual arcade game can be even more of a thrill in a real cabinet when you fight the wheel with your hands to not crash, more so if you were to race against another player [which is said to be WMMT's big strength].
The SEGA Rally test
One of the first games I tried with the previous solution, I ended up trying it again while I was away from home on my old laptop - so the first recording I got was pretty low quality...but still managed to record what may have been the fastest lap I've done in the Desert course.
With some good lines and less mistakes than usual, I got a whopping 0'56"11 in the Deesert course - although unfortunately I lost time on the next two tracks and didn't even finish Lakeside, as that track is difficult not only in the need to steer precisely through thin roads, but also through controlling your throttle to keep speed at a mid point between fast but not too fast.
Still was a glimpse of greatness that I may be able to get with some more practice, even if more difficult than a controller...and even the keyboard?
And well, that was on my old laptop while recording at a lower framerate, but as I recently returned home, I finally gave it a shot again at my PC with all the perks. It still took me 5 attempts and using a custom layout that allowed me to use the accel pedal as a slider instead of a button, mainly because of how it seemed that some turns could benefit from smooth throttle control...
...But it was mainly because Lakeside is often so thin that you will NEED to use a lower but consistent speed, meaning you need to carefully use some of the throttle but not ALL of it if you don't want to hit walls too much and lose time.
I got the Lakeside finish in the last second possible and felt like I had ascended.
It's funny how this run is a middle point between my two PBs for the game - my run from three years ago with a Gamecube controller had a total of 3'25 in the first three tracks but a 1'15 in Lakeside, while the run I did on the emulated PS2 version a few months ago with the keyboard had a 3'30 on the three tracks BUT somehow got a whopping 1'13 in Lakeside as I managed to take it at a spot-on pace.
And this run was a 3'28 in the Championship tracks with a 1'14 finish in Lakeside...but hey, unlike the other two runs
The Daytona USA test
While it was tough to get used to keeping my hands steady while swinging wide to make the car turn hard, at the same time, that added so much to the classic Daytona experience - one I hadn't played in months ever since my last birthday where I had a X360 controller borrowed for days.
Obviously, tilt steering allows me to take smoother lines when its subtle turns, but there's also something really satisfying about doing the right gear shifts as you steer hard left or right, making the car drift when shifting to 1 and making it stabilize when shifting to 3 and counter steering until I can safely shift back up to 4.
Expert took me several attempts, between having to keep consistency in almost all of the track without mistakes...and surviving the last hairpin. Approach it wrong and you'll slam into a wall with a guaranteed first place loss in the last lap [and that is if you even got to first place before that] - so it was quite the ordeal to figure out how to tackle that again after so long.
Random catches?
I have the feeling that if you have someone else using the Wi-Fi a lot right besides you, it may affect the smoothness of the inputs.
You may want to try Monect first with joy.cpl or any joystick viewer to see if all your inputs and steering go through smoothly without interruptions, as obviously you don't want those while playing something.
If it does have oddities, then it may be the router [the first days I was trying it at home, it was working fine over Wi-Fi so I suspect I may have to reset it?] or if you can't get rid of the latency no matter what, then use the USB tethering option with your PC to guarantee low latency and stability - although you'll have to steer with a cable stuck to your phone lol.
I bring this up because, while the first days trying at home [as well as when I was outside on my laptop] I had no problems, recently sometimes I get a few stutters in the smoothness of the controls when trying it at home, so I end up resorting to the USB tethering option to keep it rock solid. I still haven't restarted my router yet to confirm if it is that, but at least I know that my router sometimes likes to be funny, so I wouldn't discard that in my case 😅
In any case though, if you try this out and don't have any issues from the get go with stability or latency though even when playing with Wi-Fi...then go and have fun :]
Conclusion

I had this planned for a few days earlier, but between preparations for the day of today [December 24th] and also being stubborn into trying to get a good run in SEGA Rally to showcase the controls, it ended up getting held over for today.
But hey, at the end of the day, it has been fun to mess around with this tool to play arcade racers again - you have no idea how satisfying it was to enjoy Daytona and SEGA Rally despite my lack of a drift-less controller at the moment.
Monect seems to advertise itself as a tool for remote control and game streaming on the phone, but I only really use it for the virtual gamepad with gyroscope on PC games.
In any case, that's gonna be it for now - I'll likely prepare a more adequate post later on for this purpose, but for now I definitely still would like to thank in advance all of you who have read the stuff I post here and supported me for what will be four years of being in this platform when next year's February arrives. Aunque al principio era un poco complicado hacerse con él, fue genial luchar con uñas y dientes en las carreras del modo historia y atravesar el tráfico a alta velocidad con él.
Definitivamente me hizo darme cuenta de lo diferente que es la experiencia con la dirección inclinada (y supongo que con un volante también, especialmente uno FFB), ya que tienes que mantener constantemente las manos firmes para mantener el coche recto, a diferencia de cuando se juega con un teclado donde se puede tocar las teclas para giros ligeros y no hacer nada para mantener una línea perfectamente recta.

Monect parece anunciarse como una herramienta para el control remoto y la transmisión de juegos en el teléfono, pero en realidad sólo lo uso para el gamepad virtual con giroscopio en los juegos de PC.
