Of course RetroAchievements brought me back to this game, and with a more solid purpose than just cruising through all three courses of Match Race.
Even with just a single day of diving into the game again, it sure gave me quite the tough fight to have it give up some of what it had to offer...
What pulled me in once more
While my first time revisiting the game had me falling off a lot when trying to land off almost all jumps, even wiping out and having to restart the NORMAL Match Race at least once or twice at Golden Forest, I eventually was getting accostumed to the deal to endure more properly.
But what ended up hooking me into trying to master this game's set was none other than finally trying to figure out how to do the 1080° tricks - not only out of curiosity but also to fill out the trick list in training mode to unlock the Penguin Board.
I only figured out as someone else out there mentioned that you do NOT have to hold the R button for all three spins, but rather hold R and let go after every spin. So rather than holding it down for three spings, you have to hold it for one spin, then let go and press it again for the next one, an so on.
And yes, you have to press B at the same time you do the second one, and then B+Z when you do the third.
The input for the 1080° specifically is TOUGH to pull off properly often, more so consistently, but if you can figure out how to do these motions that only a fighting game player that mains grapplers would love, then you may be set to hit it big in Trick Attack.
But before that, though...
Taking down the Gold Man
No, not THAT Gold Man. That's just Goldman from The House of the Dead 2.
See, whenever you beat Expert Match Race, you unlock the Ice Boarder you race against in the final race. That ice man is no slouch, but as long as you drive a good route and avoid mistakes, it can be dealt with.
Once you unlock the Ice Boarder and then use it on Match Race Expert, not only you'll run into a gold version of the Ice Boarder you're using in the fifth round, but also run into an unique Gold Boarder for the final round.
You'll have to REALLY keep up with it without any mistakes to win.
Not only the other CPUs can have a good chance of rubberbanding and keeping up with you if you happen to do mistakes [as even the slowest rider, Ricky Winterborn, will keep up with you most of the time in the Expert Match Race], but the Gold Boarder is objectively faster than you on the final race, meaning that the only way you'll overtake it is by keeping up with it until the very end.
The final area with the pillars is the ONLY place where the Gold Boarder makes a mistake, as it tries to take the center and runs into a pillar...but if you trip up earlier than that or fall into the same mistake it does, you will NOT win. It took me almost two hours to pull it off, but the reward was SUPER worth it.
Getting Gold at Time Attack and Trick Attack
Because no racing game with an achievements set is complete without challenges that give you a reason to do a loop through the Time Attack mode.
And if your game has one, the modes where you also have to make use of the tricks you may usually not know/use in the normal races.
For Time Attack, while the default times are so slow that you are likely to beat through the top 3 times in all of the courses whenever you're going through Match Race, the challenge times were much less of a joke, requiring minimal mistakes and keeping stability as much as possible.
Thankfully, the Gold Boarder I painstakingly fought for to unlock is by all means the best boarder in the game, mainly because of the extra weight allowing for a far more consistent amount of safe landings while having the same top speed as Dion Blaster, the starting boarder with the highest top speed.
So...you get the benefit of the highest speed boarder in the game while being way less prone than falling over, not just better than Dion but also than the rest of the boarders. It is logical that it is the preferred boarder for time attack and speedruns in this game.
I think that the hardest time to crack was Dragon Cave, having to look up that you CAN take a shortcut early on to cut a bit of the starting road AND jump off into the cliff on the front of the starting turns, saving a solid few seconds if you can make sure you land properly on the mountain all the way down, which is easier with the Gold Boarder.
For Trick Attack, you can try for chaining tricks mid-air for big combo points, with three or four tricks in a combo giving a nice reward, and more so if you can go for combos with 360s, 720s and 900s in them.
But if the little section at the start didn't hint you enough, figuring out how to pull off 1080s may be the fastest way to rack up enough points at once, meaning that if you can do a handful of those along with other tricks, you can make it through the challenge score thresholds.
Its not something you have to do unless you are aiming for the game's set mastery, but since I did, you may get a kick out of someone actually getting to use those cursed 1080 tricks in this game.
Final Veredict?
I'd say that the game left me positively mixed, in the sense of how some of the challenges [Beating the Gold Boarder, doing the Deadly Fall Trick Attack challenge as I desperately tried to get 1080s, the Dragon Cave Time Attack challenge] really squeezed me thin, but still got a kick out of stomping this game decisively and throroughly through all of its modes.
For sure got some satisfaction out of finally pulling through those challenges when the worst ones took one to two hours to get through, and for as finicky the game is to often decide throw you off unless you are absolutely angled properly to land on the board [or are using some help, like the Penguin Board and the Gold Boarder- but even with those you need to make sure you're angled well], it is quite unique that Nintendo had this take for a snowboarding game compared to the more casually lenient Wave Race 64.
...Hey, it is pretty funny that their sequels worked the other way around, don't you think?
Wave Race Blue Storm became the tougher and less merciful one, while 1080 Avalanche modernized the snowboarding into a faster paced, more accessible arcade controls and tricks, which makes it for a far easier game to jump into than 1080 Snowboarding on the N64.
Its unfortunate that apparently it got stomped in sales back in the day by the SSX games, but I can tell you right now after getting an early taste of it once more [I played it long ago on Wii before this], it still got the good sauce, and sure will be looking forward to talk about it.

En el modo Time Attack, aunque los tiempos predeterminados son tan lentos que es probable que superes los tres mejores tiempos en todos los circuitos cada vez que participas en una Match Race, los tiempos de los desafíos eran mucho menos fáciles, ya que exigían cometer el mínimo de errores y mantener la estabilidad en la medida de lo posible.
