This is a game that I can't avoid having happy memories of my childhood from due to the fact I remember vividly that I got it from a Christmas gift - and in itself stands out as a polished remake of Kirby's most ambitious adventure on the SNES.
And to it's credit, unlike Super Mario 64 DS (which I also really liked, but haven't played in a while and I'm aware it's divisive to some people), KSSU is regarded to be an undeniable upgrade to the original, staying faithful to the original games while having the modern coat of paint of the time, adding a few new songs and even new modes.
The reasons why I'm only delving proper into it today...is because I hadn't played it in a while - at least not until completing almost all of the original Super Star modes.
But as I had been playing it on and off this year, until recently when I beat Milky Way Wishes, I have some more to talk about each mode...and a few additional challenges I did for the game in RetroAchievements.
And to skip talking too much about Dyna Blade and Revenge of Meta Knight respectively [as I only di one or two challenges for each], I'll tell you here what I did for both.
Dyna Blade's challenge was just...beating her with the Wing ability. Nothing difficult.
And I say it like that because there of course is an achievement for a few extra things like getting all three extra lives in the bonus stage, as well as unlocking both Trial Rooms - but I count those as things the game casually lets you do and keep track of as intended, rather than a new challenge from RetroAchievements. Still neat to go for those in one go.
And for Revenge of Meta Knight, while there are several challenges I didn't do on my first go [painting the Heavy Lobster red, destroying Heavy Lobster on the first appearance], the thumbnail of this one is in alusion to the challenge of whooping Meta Knight's face without any abilities.
Okay, now lets go over a bit of the more particular challenges I did on the way.
Wait, Kirby couldn't do that before?
Spring Breeze is a remake of Kirby Dream Land 1 in tie simple length and levels it has, so it is pretty easy - and more so when here, unlike the original KDL, abilities can be used from enemies.
Yeah, the first game actually didn't have that Kirby staple.
So of course, the first challenge I went was an old-school styled one: Beat it with no abilities allowed...and without dying once.
Thankfully, doing that is fairly simple because you deal fair damage with the stars you can inhale from enemies (they drop them with certain attacks), so all you need is a taste of patience and decent aim to spit the attacks at all the bosses. The end.
Oh, and there's also another funny one: YOU'RE BANNED
Beating Dedede with the hammer is trivial - but getting it in Spring Breeze actually requires you to inhale two enemies with abilities at the same time. This causes a roulette to select a random ability - and this is the only way to get the Hammer in that mode.
If you do though, don't lose it until you ban Dedede, and ggs.
Screw racing, I'm here for the buffet
Gourmet Race is simple: Run against King Dedede, eat fruits for more points and finish first for 30 bonus points per race. If you win all three races, that's a free 90 points plus any stash of fruits you grab on the way.
...So I was intrigued immediately when I saw a challenge to beat Desde WITHOUT winning a single race.
It took me several attempts as I needed to do quite a few things:
- Race ahead of Dedede to eat any food that he may run into to reduce his amount of points. More important than you think when he's guaranteed a free 90 points at the end of everything.
- Make sure to pick up as most food as possible, especially Maxim Tomatoes (they grant more points) along the way to increase your points. You'll need as many as possible to offset your disadvantage.
- At the end of each stage, there's a free Maxim Tomato VERY close to the goal. It's possible to get this without crossing the goal to reduce Dedede's chances, but of course can be tough to get it right - as you can either overshoot and hit the goal before him...or eat the tomato as he finishes.
If you managed to do everything right, you'll have enough points to beat him and get the achievement.
The Rock
Great Cave Offensive is a mode about finding treasure - but I didn't feel like hunting for treasure for now, so I just tried to head to every level exit as fast as possible until I got to Wham Bam Rock (which is why I don't have much to say about it right now).

Yup.
Oh, and screw this treasure too. If you've seen it before and even obtained it, you know well how precise it can be to obtain. The game gives you the tool to get there...but it will still take you several attempts to get right.
Who needs permanent abilities when you have endless chewing gum?
Milky Way Wishes's gimmick is that, unlike the other modes, you CAN'T copy abilities by swallowing enemies. But instead, you can get permanent ability trophies that allow you to use it anytime you wish - including making helpers out of it. So it can be useful whenever you feel like messing around for long with a specific ability.
However, a challenge for this mode was to beat it WITHOUT any of those ability trophies EXCEPT the missable, hidden Copy ability capsule... which allows you to copy the ability from enemies you hit with it - classic Kirby style.
This means you can get free abilities anywhere like usual with it, but another thing you can do indefinitely is summon a helper with it, turn it back into an item you can inhale, and spit it back at an enemy or boss.
And for the record, any items or attacks inhaled and spat back do chunkier damage in a single hit than most abilities, in order to offset the case you're out of abilities to fight with in any other mode.
Both as a fun spin on the game to try and navigate most levels fighting like this (or attacking with Copy against enemies that don't directly grant a copy ability when scanned - although said attack is fast pitiful in damage) and a clutch way to deal with bosses when avoiding to pick up any other permanent abilities, it was a neat fresh of breath air for something I had already played many years ago.
It was funny too to get a hold of Marx's patterns when I was focusing entirely on trying to inhale any attacks from his I could to retaliate - and for example, found out you can inhale the scythe attack he does.
Conclusion
Kirby Super Star Ultra is pretty fun - packaged in separate small modes but still a neatly nice stroll to play through even when outside and on a phone screen. It was fun to add a bit more challenge to the classic modes that are otherwise fairly simple [aside from the fact Great Cave Offensive and Milky Way Wishes have a lot of collectibles I have yet to go for].
And if you are curious, yes, I did try The Arena after beating Milky Way Wishes. Turns out a boss gauntlet can still be rough on you even when its Kirby if you aren't prepared to fight patiently to keep as much health as possible between rounds.
But I'll get that down someday, and the harder remix of Spring Breeze new to Ultra [Revenge of the King] down as well. I'm pretty sure I actually did that many years ago on the original cartridge of the game I used to have, so of course I can do that again handily with proper preparation.
