Good afternoon, and sorry for the month-long disappearance-while I couldn't assure getting back to the consistent routine as usual, I at least wanted to give an update and another recent mini-adventure piece. This one more than others because of how...curious it turns out to be.
Probably a few years back, I don't remember exactly when, but I ended up playing the one. Street Fighter 1. Not 2.
I think back then it was out of curiosity to test how reliable was that tip you hear around about doing negative edge to moves, meaning hold down the button, do the command with the stick THEN release the button, instead of stick first button then button as would be common from SF2 onwards.
I mention this since SF1 is notorious for having suck reliability for doing the special moves in the first place, though I'll mention later how getting semi-consistency in this breaks the game in two.
Anyway, a few days ago...for reasons I won't explain at the moment, I decided to revisit the game on my own to see how bad it could still be with the negative edge technique, having long ago heard and even tried the game with this tactic, but deciding to try it again due to...in more or less accurate words to something, the frustration of an outsider for this game. For better and for worse 😅
The game has the same 6 buttons expected from a Street Fighter, but control-wise, it's REALLY clunky in that it's more of a case of jumping back and forth to move and very clunky jumps for when you're trying to do actual jumps, unlike its crucially improved sequel.
This gets worse by the time your normal attacks are even more clunky, with low range and damage, compared to enemies who can practically decide whether to run and jump in your face repeatedly to kill you in three hits.
It doesn't take many words, as there's not much way to describe it beyond showing it in action, to say that this feels like anything but an ordinary fighting game, which is what usually causes the big surprise for gamers who stumble upon this when they then move on to SF2 which practically became the foundation of the future of fighting games.
The reason I mention all this is because there is one thing that can help you, in no ambiguous terms, wreck the game in potentially around 10 minutes if you're lucky or incredibly consistent.
The special moves as I mentioned here are practically useless to do in the traditional way, but even with applying negative edge, they are still VERY inconsistent. The way I've found to halfway consistently do Hadoken and Shoryuken is to try to constantly do the Shoryuken/Dragon Punch command, holding the fist button, pressing Forward-Down-Down-Forward and then releasing fist...trying to release it the moment I press the last diagonal.
I say this because while the best case can get you a Shoryuken, which can kill in one or two hits at point blank range, it is also more consistent as a method to at least see if you get a Hadoken, which also has the ability to kill in two or three hits.
This Hadoken you see going at Adon? That was enough to take all the life he had left in this fight ðŸ¤
...And that's where I make a point of saying that Street Fighter is fundamentally broken: enemies can kill you very quickly, and the only in-between between suffering forever to be able to do anything to them and finishing them off in less than 30 seconds is literally your luck and execution to get the special moves to work in the first place.
The bonus stages at least are a small distraction that ended up being reused for SF2 in concept, though here they are a mini-game of pressing the button to break bricks [may remind some of the Test your Might that would later exist in Mortal Kombat] and a mini-game of breaking wooden boards with your moves. Still, they are appreciated as an idea as an intermission between every two fights, and since they don't rely on fighting enemies...they are not insufferable as such.
There are plenty of videos on how to try to do the SF1 special moves, including one from Justin Wong himself, iconic MVC2 veteran and also iconic EVO Moment 37 victim [😂], but it's still very, VERY likely to take you about an hour to adjust and try to get consistent enough to be able to pull off the specials like fresh bread. And until then, it's going to be a pretty frustrating experience.
I have a game play of the game from two days ago where I spent 18 minutes from Birdie to Sagat, having taken 10 minutes in a fight against Lee that I didn't record in that game, but in short it took me quite a while because I couldn't find a way to be THAT consistent to kill enemies fast, with the exception of Adon who I somehow got a perfect streak of Shoryukens to finish him off without continuing 🤣
But I mention that because the next day, I got a run of nothing but 5 credits: With the initial credit and nothing but four continues...I finished the game in 17 minutes.
And that's why I can say with certainty that this game is fundamentally broken or at least not at all legitimately balanced, even if you were to play against someone else [competition of who does the special moves first], since as I said, if you're not making a circus out of the street fighters in this game with the special moves, you'll be cursing the fact that they're so unusually unreliable to execute along with the particularly clunky controls when trying to beat Sagat or any of his minions.
I don't think so today, or at least not without a break from being out all day, but it's probably because of my unusual stubbornness to see that I could potentially, in theory, get a one credit game out of this game with no continues if I were to manage to spam Shoryukens consistently every round and not get killed before trying. But I think it's still potentially a game of luck if you manage to be accurate on every attempt without enemies falling on you in record time.
But hey...at the very least it's a funny new story to tell, and it would probably be even funnier if I told it with the full context, but I'll wait for at least a week to pass and/or the context-related video to appear [preferably hoping I've already been un-executed by then].

En fin, hace unos dÃas...por razones que no explicaré por el momento, decidà revisitar el juego por mi propia cuenta para ver que tan malo podÃa ser aún con la técnica del negative edge, habiendo escuchado y hasta probado hace mucho el juego con esta táctica, pero decidiendo probarlo de nuevo debido a...en palabras más o menos certeras a algo, la frustración de alguien ajeno por este juego. Para bien y para mal 😅
El juego tiene los mismos 6 botones esperados de un Street Fighter, pero a nivel de controles, es REALMENTE tosco en el que es más dar saltitos adelante y atrás para moverte y saltos muy toscos para cuando intentas hacer saltos de verdad, a diferencia de su crucialmente mejorada secuela.
Esto se va a peor para cuando tus ataques normales son aún más toscos, con bajo rango y daño, comparado con los enemigos que prácticamente pueden decidir si correr y saltarte en la cara repetidas veces para matarte en tres golpes.
No hacen falta muchas palabras, ya que no hay mucha forma de describirlo mas allá de mostrarlo en acción, para decir que esto se siente como cualquier cosa menos un juego de pelea ordinario, lo cual es lo que suele causar la gran sorpresa para jugadores que se topan con esto cuando luego pasan al SF2 que prácticamente se volvió la fundación del futuro de los juegos de pelea.
El motivo por el cual menciono todo esto es porque hay una cosa que puede ayudarte a, en términos no ambiguos, destrozar el juego en potencialmente alrededor de 10 minutos si tienes suerte o una consistencia increÃble.
Los movimientos especiales como mencioné aquÃ, prácticamente no sirven de nada hacerlos de la forma tradicional, pero aún con aplicar el negative edge, siguen siendo MUY inconsistentes. La forma que yo hallé de medio hacerlo consistentemente el Hadoken y el Shoryuken es intentar hacer constantemente el comando de Shoryuken/Dragon Punch, manteniendo el botón de puño, presionando Adelante-Abajo-Abajo/Adelante y luego soltar puño...intentando soltarlo en el momento que presiono el último diagonal.
Esto lo digo porque mientras que el mejor caso te puede salir un Shoryuken, que puede matar en uno o dos golpes a quemarropa, también es más consistente como método para al menos ver si te sale un Hadoken, que también tiene la capacidad de matar en dos o tres golpes.
Este Hadoken que ven que va hacia Adon? Eso fue suficiente para quitarle toda la vida que le quedaba en esta pelea ðŸ¤

Y por eso es que puedo decir con certeza que este juego está fundamentalmente roto o al menos para nada legÃtimamente balanceado, aún si fueras a jugar contra otra persona [competencia de quien hace los movimientos especiales primero], ya que como dije, si no estás haciendo un circo de los peleadores callejeros en este juego con los movimientos especiales, estarás maldiciendo el hecho de que son tan inusualmente infiables de ejecutar junto con los controles particularmente toscos cuando intentes vencer a Sagat o a alguno de sus esbirros.
Hoy no creo hacerlo, o al menos no sin un descanso de estar afuera todo el dÃa, pero es probable que por mi inusual terquedad de ver que potencialmente podrÃa, en teorÃa, sacar una partida de un crédito, sin continuaciones, de este juego si fuera a logar hacer spam de Shoryukens consistentemente en cada ronda y no me matan antes de intentarlo. Pero creo que sigue siendo en potencia un juego de suerte si logras ser preciso en cada intento sin que te caigan los enemigos encima en tiempo récord.
Pero bueno...como mÃnimo es una historia chistosa nueva que contar, y probablemente serÃa aún más graciosa si lo contara con el contexto completo, pero esperaré a que pase al menos una semana y/o aparezca el video relacionado al contexto [preferiblemente esperando que para ese entonces ya me hayan des-ejecutado].
