What would be better to celebrate this Happy New Year 2022 than one of the best games released in the wake of the new millennium two decades ago: Ridge Racer Type 4, arriving at December of 1999, with an incredibly memorable presentation, a gameplay quality that the franchise was known for up to that point, and a style that feels unmatched even after all this time. As Namco's last Ridge Racer for that decade and the Playstation 1, their experience they gained those years built up to this one game, and more than 20 years later, that still shows. For this occasion I ended up using Duckstation with an upscaled resolution, so that the screenshots aren't 320x240 like on console and you get to appreciate more some of the visual candy the game offers.
This game includes 8 tracks, which is the biggest amount of tracks ever included in any Ridge Racer game before it, but it presents you to them in a quite unique way: The Grand Prix mode has you go through these 8 tracks in three phases, with the first two having two races and the last phase having four races; you start with a car with low speed in the first phase, but as you progress, you will get new cars with faster speeds on the second and third phase (along with another one for the very last race).
As I hadn't played this game in years, I ended up getting 3rd in the first two races and 2nd in the two races after that (in both times it was the minimum position to keep going) and just got the first car upgraded for higher speed in the three car changes, but achieving better positions in those first races will grant you new cars.
There's also a Time Attack mode where you can go through any of the unlocked tracks with any of the cars you unlocked (regardless of their class). Content-wise, while 8 tracks might not sound like much, in Grand Prix you can choose between four racing teams, and while three of those teams go from "slow but eays for beginners" to "hard but fast for experienced", I ended up playing today with Dig Racing Team, considered the "expert"/hardest team, having no real advantage with its cars and races being pretty tight because of that. On that note, you can get cars depending of an unique combination of your performance on the first four races per team, so with what you can unlock, you end up getting...320 cars
You can also choose between four car manufacturers, two of which focus on Drift (less turning but better drifts), and the other two focus on Grip (better turning). The gameplay feels incredibly solid, as while it doesn't lean as much on the exaggerated as the first Ridge Racer games did, it does not go for simulation either like Gran Turismo did, so it does keep a balance of a more subtle yet arcade-ish steering and drifting style, which is fitting with the presentation itself. I can't really explain much more of the gameplay itself, but I can tell you that its pretty good and that with practice, the driving will click on you.
Now, you might have noticed that I have used several screenshots from replays instead of in-game races; aside from taking screenshots while on races being a bit hard (as I needed to concentrate on those to win, considering I was using the hardest team), the game looks absolutely gorgeous for the PS1, with detailed backgrounds and cars (which even get some beautiful reflections on the garage and during replays, though not in-game) along with some superb visual direction making the enviroments look so clean and modern.
This makes racing on this game a feast for your eyes, as well as a pleasure for your ears and a satisfaction for your hands when taking some fast turns on these tracks. Oh, and did I say "pleasure for your ears"? Because on top of sounds being well done as well, the soundtrack on this game is just as uniquely fantastic as the game visuals, which definitely add the cherry on top of everything else that the game offers to you.
And well, what about that Grand Prix mode with teams? You end up as a driver as one of them, which is actually shown with dialogue from the team's manager, not only giving a face and personality to each team, but also unique dialogue depending of how were you performing on those races, and even hints of story depending of your team. There's a lot of unpack from this, specially with the part about different dialogue from results and four different teams, so just like with the gameplay, this kind of cool detail is best experienced on your own.
So...a Grand Prix mode with some story and unique structure (which lets you save between each phase), a Time Attack mode, a Garage where you can see all your unlocked cars and even create your own decals, and a first time for Ridge Racer games: two-player multiplayer through splitscreen (not needing System-link, though its also supported); RRT4 is jam-packed with stellar presentation, thrilling races, and 320 unlockable cars (along with an extra Special car if you do end up unlocking ALL of them), and it definitely makes me happy to have played this again. This title of course ended up as one of Namco's best sellers on the console along with Tekken 3, and was rightfully featured on the PS1 Classic as one of the essential hits for the Playstation. So...are you ready to get to the Real Racing Roots?
Oh, and the final race actually takes in December 31 of 1999, which ends up being quite fitting for this date for one reason: Ridge Racer Type 4 wishes you a Happy New Year!

Qué mejor para celebrar este Feliz Año 2022 que uno de los mejores juegos lanzados a raíz del nuevo milenio hace dos décadas: Ridge Racer Type 4, que llegó en diciembre de 1999, con una presentación increíblemente memorable, una calidad de juego por la que la franquicia era conocida hasta ese momento, y un estilo que parece inigualable incluso después de todo este tiempo. Para esta ocasión he utilizado Duckstation con una resolución aumentada, para que las capturas no sean de 320x240 como en consola y se pueda apreciar más parte del caramelo visual que ofrece el juego.
Este juego incluye 8 pistas, que es la mayor cantidad de pistas incluidas en cualquier juego de Ridge Racer anterior, pero te las presenta de una forma bastante única: El modo Grand Prix te hace recorrer estos 8 circuitos en tres fases, las dos primeras con dos carreras y la última con cuatro; empiezas con un coche de baja velocidad en la primera fase, pero a medida que avanzas, obtendrás nuevos coches de mayor velocidad en la segunda y tercera fase (junto con otro para la última carrera).
Como hacía años que no jugaba a este juego, acabé consiguiendo la 3ª posición en las dos primeras carreras y la 2ª en las dos siguientes (en ambas ocasiones era la posición mínima para seguir adelante) y sólo conseguí mejorar el primer coche para conseguir mayor velocidad en los tres cambios de coche, pero conseguir mejores posiciones en esas primeras carreras te otorga nuevos coches.
También hay un modo Contrarreloj en el que puedes recorrer cualquiera de los circuitos desbloqueados con cualquiera de los coches que hayas desbloqueado (independientemente de su clase). En cuanto al contenido, aunque 8 circuitos no parezcan gran cosa, en Grand Prix puedes elegir entre cuatro equipos de carreras, y aunque tres de esos equipos van de "lento pero fácil para principiantes" a "duro pero rápido para experimentados", hoy he acabado jugando con el Dig Racing Team, considerado el equipo "experto"/más duro, que no tiene ninguna ventaja real con sus coches y las carreras son bastante ajustadas por ello. En ese sentido, puedes conseguir coches dependiendo de una combinación única de tu rendimiento en las primeras cuatro carreras por equipo, así que con lo que puedes desbloquear, acabas consiguiendo... 320 coches
También puedes elegir entre cuatro fabricantes de coches, dos de los cuales se centran en el Drift (menos giros pero mejores derrapes), y los otros dos se centran en el Grip (mejores giros). La jugabilidad se siente increíblemente sólida, ya que aunque no se inclina tanto por lo exagerado como los primeros juegos de Ridge Racer, tampoco apuesta por la simulación como Gran Turismo, por lo que mantiene un equilibrio de un estilo de dirección y derrape más sutil pero arcade, que encaja con la propia presentación. No puedo explicar mucho más de la jugabilidad en sí, pero puedo decir que es bastante buena y que con la práctica, la conducción te hará clic.
Aparte de que tomar capturas de pantalla durante las carreras es un poco difícil (ya que tenía que concentrarme en ellas para ganar, teniendo en cuenta que utilizaba el equipo más duro), el juego tiene un aspecto absolutamente magnífico para la PS1, con fondos y coches detallados (que incluso tienen unos bonitos reflejos en el garaje y durante las repeticiones, aunque no en el juego) junto con una dirección visual magnífica que hace que los entornos parezcan muy limpios y modernos.
Todo esto hace que las carreras de este juego sean una fiesta para los ojos, así como un placer para los oídos y una satisfacción para las manos al tomar algunas curvas rápidas en estas pistas. Ah, ¿y he dicho "placer para los oídos"? Porque además de los sonidos, la banda sonora de este juego es tan fantástica como los efectos visuales, lo que sin duda pone la guinda a todo lo que el juego te ofrece.
Y bueno, ¿Qué hay de los equipos en el modo Grand Prix? Te pones en la piel de uno de los pilotos, lo cual se muestra con diálogos del director del equipo, no sólo dando una cara y personalidad a cada equipo, sino también diálogos únicos dependiendo de cómo te desenvuelvas en esas carreras, e incluso indicios de la historia dependiendo de tu equipo. Hay mucho que desempacar de esto, especialmente con la parte de los diferentes diálogos de los resultados y los cuatro equipos diferentes, así que al igual que con el juego, este tipo de detalles geniales es mejor experimentarlos por tu cuenta.
Así que... un Grand Prix con algo de historia y estructura única (que te permite guardar entre cada fase), un modo Contrarreloj, un Garaje donde puedes ver todos tus coches desbloqueados e incluso crear tus propias calcomanías, y un multijugador para dos jugadores a través de pantalla dividida (sin necesidad de System-link, aunque también es compatible); RRT4 está repleto de una presentación estelar, carreras emocionantes y 320 coches desbloqueables (junto con un coche especial extra si acabas desbloqueando TODOS), y definitivamente me hace feliz haber vuelto a jugarlo. Este título, por supuesto, acabó siendo uno de los más vendidos de Namco en la consola, junto con Tekken 3, y fue incluido, con razón, en el PS1 Classic como uno de los éxitos imprescindibles de la Playstation. Así que... ¿estás preparado para regresar a Real Racing Roots?
