A classic that all of you might know already, or maybe even played. Megaman X is one of the most impressive leaps in a franchise regarding how to evolve the gameplay- as while it retains the core basics of jumping and shooting enemies, not only it feels more fair overall as there's less of an emphasis over bottomless pit single block platforming [indicating a more lenient design from the developers], but also introducing a few key additions that give MMX quite the new flavor of gameplay compared to the classic series.
After many days of saying to myself that, man I shold play MMX again [cause I did beat it once or twice...many years ago...on the PSP], today I finally bit the bullet after getting to see that it was fully stocked in RetroAchievements...and went for something I hadn't done before.
The entire game in ONE sitting. No savestates or passwords to leave the game on a cliffhanger and come back later: Today I wanted to be X, and today I would end Sigma once and for all.
Shh, ignore the fact that he comes in at least six games. This is just about X1...for now.
Taking on an impromptu challenge: Buster-only bosses
You know that bosses in Mega Man usually have a weakness from another boss weapon that can make them easier or even straight up trivialize them?
Well, something I inadvertently ended up getting into was to try and beat every boss buster only after getting a cheevo notification of beating Chill Penguin with only the buster.
...Which is normal when you are starting the game and don't have any weapon in hand.
But the fact there were achievements for those instantly threw me the curveball of aiming for those at once, not only knowing that some bosses are REALLY easy to cheese [Spark Mandrill gets Shotgun Ice'd repeatedly for a minute and dies], but also...the achievements were right there. I just had to bite the bullet and push for those, which would also be unique when the last time I played this, I did use the weaknesses on the first fights without any mercy.
So in my playing order...
- Chill Penguin was...the first one. So it was a mandatory Buster-only kill, although it just makes to go for him first beyond his easy difficulty because his stage has the Dash Upgrade in the middle of it- as in this game you need it upgrade just to dash unlike the sequels.
- Flame Mammoth was next, also easy, and so is his stage if you specifically play it after Chill Penguin is defeated, as all the lava is frozen and you can go for the heart upgrade...and the Sub-Tank. It is pretty nice.
- Spark Mandrill was my third choice, and I did actually stumble with completing the stage once due to how it was the first time I actually ever fought Mandrill without the weakness weapon, so the lightning attack he could use from pounding the ground was totally news to me and caught me off guard. Some minutes later, it was done.
- Afterwards, I tackled Sting Chameleon as I knew the Body Upgrade was over there for taking half the damage from everything, and the boss was a pain to figure out in how to approach safely for several minutes until I sort of got a half-safe pattern where I finished off the boss with just three points of health left.
- Next up was Boomer Kuwanger and...beyond one death from getting acught by his teleports, he was pretty easy as soon as I noticed his boomerang range wouldn't reach the top corners of the screen, so I'd retreat there in most cases and attack from far away to avoid getting suplexed.
- Storm Eagle was another fairly easy boss all things considered - he looked intimidating at the start with how he could just sweep from above and either direction...but dashing preemptively can always get you out of his range if he does, and is an easy stationary target for charged shots otherwise. Was the last of the three bosses I could beat in my first visit with the buster, next to the first two mentioned.
- Armored Armadillo will get his own section.
- Launch Octopus was the final boss defeated, also going for a health upgrade that's easy to find if you know how to open the entrance already. I used a sub-tank to avoid redoing the fight from my first visit just because I felt I didn't want to retry as I hadn't figured out fast enough a consistent way of escaping/destroying the small but fast missiles it shoots, so I instead tanked more damage [with the Body upgrade and health upgrades too] after the subtank heal.
Most of the powerups were easy to find as I still had memory of the last time I played and knowing where I could get them, such as the hearts in Kuwanger and Mandrill's stage. There was exactly one upgrade I had to do a few laps in a few stages guessing where it was until I remembered a silly stage with a possible area.
And for better or for worse, this is where I can actually talk about Armored Armadillo's stage for more than a few reasons.
The Armadillo Odyssey
Getting the health upgrade here was easy as I already knew the steps: Destroy the crusher thing in the first section fast enough to be able to pick it up above, as it is in plain sight but inaccessible if you don't destroy that crusher early.
However, the sub-tank upgrade was hiding in a cheeky spot which I only tried to check after several minutes of roaming the Sting Chameleon and Launch Octopus stages.
! [Hidden Spoiler Text] You know that first section I mentioned about the crusher thing that moves forward?
The Sub Tank is right in the place where he spawns. You just have to wait for it to get out, then sneak in there and catch it.
But the two things that took the most time out of his stage ended up being the two big highlights it has to its name. The first one being...the boss.
Armored Armadillo is an interesting anomaly in that, unlike other bosses, really makes use of its armor by blocking most charged shots you try to land. And as you remember, I was on a fixed path to beating all eight bosses with nothing but the buster...so you can guess it took me quite a while to figure out how to even beat him due to that.
The first strategy you can figure out beyond aiming for charged shots when he lands after his rolling attack is to...bait his guard attack. He can block normal bullets and not do anything special, but he'll charge an eight-direction attack of his own if you try a charged shot.
But what I ended up doing later on was to try firing a small charged shot [green] to trigger that attack, then immediately start charging...and hope that not only I get the full charged shot in time, but also that as soon as I jump over the attack, I can actually land the shot quickly before he can just block it again.
And the big reason why I wanted to go for full charged shots is because they do a bit more damage than normal and green charged shots...which only do one bar of damage to bosses. So you can guess how many failed attempts ended because of trying to just do with small charged shots but having very little progress for the amount of time I was getting hit between the charged attack and the rolling attack.
I think I died to him like five to six times in total.
At the end, I decided to just end it once and for all, and spent one of my sub-tanks [which aren't gone forever, just that you have to fill them again on your own] in the last attempt where I had him halfway in health but I was close to dying. Already had wasted too much time in this idiot due to the buster challenge, was not going to waste any further if I had a way to give myself a second chance.
The other big thing in this stage is one that...I actually tried to get after I got all the health and subtank upgrades, but I didn't realize until several attempts of doing the steps that I was missing one armor upgrade.
Yes, I already had got the Helmet, Body and Dash upgrade...but I didn't look for nor find by accident the Buster upgrade. Didn't think on it as I was going to bank on a certain event granting you another buster upgrade anyways...but it certainly was a mistake I realized after trying to get the secret technique because you need all four armor upgrades as well.
So I just went to the Sigma stages once and for all.
Time for a little payback
The stages themselves, while having some platforming to do for sure [mainly the first stage with the floating platforms over the bottomless pit and flying enemies], are more of a vehicle for a different take on a boss rush: You face one boss in the first stage, then two in the second stage, and then the remaining FIVE in the third stage...
But since there aren't achievements for beating the rematch fights buster-only, I was going to finally cheese these bosses to death with their weaknesses.
Vile returns after the Intro Stage where he just forces you to lose to his armor for Zero to come and save you...and does the exact same thing again: You can't beat the armor he has, but Zero sacrifices himself with an explosion to destroy it, and while you were already damaged, his heroic attempt at saving you gives you a second wind [restores all your health] to properly kick his ass.
I was struggling at first with the buster until I discovered Homing Torpedo being his weakness on the fly. And unlike the first eight bosses, the rest don't have any achievements for buster only.
Okay, except one, but that is way more convoluted for me to actually wish to count right now.
So...bye bye Vile, you worthless piece of junk, don't come back again.
And with that, we see our heroic mentor Zero succumb to his wounds, but not before giving us one thing to help our final mission.
At the end of the first Sigma Stage, there's Bospider awaiting for you. Just...just Shotgun Ice that thing each time it comes down and save yourself the time.
Now that we have all upgrades, it was time for getting that one secret technique in Armored Armadillo...that requires you to get to the ledge above the boss door with full health depsite the amount of enemies on the way out. And apparently doing it a few times - it isn't exactly clear but it just seems to need you to do it a few times for it to appear once you have all upgrades.
What awaits here?

Oh. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-
But we won't use that just yet.
So we move on to Sigma Stage 2, two more bosses to slap with their weaknesses, and it's Rangda Bangda time.
...Rangda Bangda....what kind of name is that? Why is it a wall with spikes in the center? Sigma could have won easily if the whole thing had been spikes...actually nevermind, good thing Sigma DIDN'T do just that.
Died once against this thing - you have to shoot down the eyes that open, which can turn green for shooting a single orb, red for shooting multiple orbs, and blue for just ramming into you. And sometimes the walls will close on to you, having to walljump to avoid the spikes and attack the nose thing that will start moving around to try hitting you as well.
You can actually destroy the nose thing first before the eyes if you have a chance...which leaves you with fighting the two eyes in a third of the screen available. But I still could get them down thanks to Chameleon Sting for big damage [the weakness].
The endgame stretch
The Sigma Stages are already considerable as endgame for this game, but the only thing left between me and completing the game was Sigma Stage 3...and Sigma Stage 4 with the fight against Sigma himself. I already had obtained every upgrade possible and even the super secret Mickey Mousketool that will help later, so just digging the shovel into those last two stages was all I needed to do.
I may have to revisit the game one day to aim for the weakness strats for each boss just for the no-damage achievements, but at least for now, just figuring out a way to dismantle STING CHAMELEOOOON with the Boomerang Cutter was satisfying.
But not as satisfying as using the Electric Spark charged shot to DESTROY Armored Armadillo's armor and destroy him into atoms after the hurdle he was buster-only.
HIT THAT GRIDDY ON HIM MEGA MAN
The Sigma boss in here was D-Rex, a huge machine that will try to ram you with the upper jaw, the lower jaw on wheels, chomp into you if you are too slow when going through the space he leaves, or throw a giant orb that can only be dodged in the upper corner. I lost one life to it and wasted most of my Boomerang Cutter weapon [weakness] in that life, but I managed to get it to critical health with the buster only and finish it off with the little I had left of Cutter without having to resort to a subtank.
Oh, and regarding that one extra boss I mentioned that had an extra achievement for doing buster only? It is technically this boss...but it isn't ONLY that boss alone you had to do for it.
...No. I'm not going to do that. Don't have anywhere near the amount of practice [nor patience] to even try going through two of the most annoying buster-only bosses back to back with three other bosses AND the D-Rex with nothing but the buster and no healing.
But huge props to anyone that has done that.
With that thing defeated, it was now truly endgame time. Just me, a single lengthy climbing up a wal section...and Sigma himself.
But first, I would have to face his evil robotic companion, Velgauder-
Remember that Mickey Mouseketool Secret Technique I mentioned before?

Now it's time to deal with Sigma-
HADOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKEN SHOOOOOOOOOOORYUUUUKEEEN
If you NEVER had heard of this before, the Secret Technique you can get in MMX is none other than Ryu's Hadoken move from Street Fighter. And it one shots ANYTHING it can hit.
So yeah, if you go through the hassle of getting everything AND especially the Hadoken itself...and know how to use the classic motion input, anything that approaches you on the ground can be destroyed instantly. As long as you have full health to use it
Except for Sigma's final phase.
Unless you are playing Maverick Hunter X.
Doing this buster only is a NIGHTMARE due to the variety of attacks, his head being at the top while only reachable with the claws that can shoot lightnings above and below, and the fact that your fully charged buster will do a SINGLE drop of damage against him. And only a fully charged buster - stray shots won't do anything.
...But I am no fool. I wasn't going to do this fight with Buster only if it was going to be that hard [although I tried...and had to use TWO subtanks after barely doing any damage due to that].
No, if you want to take this thing down fast, you use Rolling Shield, which is the only other way to damage him...and does TWO points of damage, so it is infinitely faster as long as you don't waste all your weapon ammo to finish him off for good.
BECAUSE OF ARMORED ARMADILLO, YOU PIECE OF- wait...what do you mean "us"?
End of the journey
"Those who sacrificed themselves for the victory will never return."
Guess who comes back in the next game and in every sequel afterwards until he outlives X through his own sequel series.

...He's been missing since 2004 - not counting crossovers. Although this reminds me of how I gave this game again a shot in the first place to prepare myself to try out sooner or later the awesome 16-Bit fanmade remake/demake of X8 that released not too long ago.
But hey, at least we ended Sigma's reign of terror once and for all!

So that's why there are eight Mega Man X games.
Conclusion
For a game that I hadn't revisited in a long while, beyond my MMX muscle memory still being there because of how fun it is to just jump dash everywhere in these games, it was sure a much more fun session than I expected to do in a sitting. And got a good stash of RetroAchievements from just those two and a half hours alone :]

Asumiendo un reto improvisado: Todos los jefes con el Buster
¿Saben que los jefes de Mega Man suelen tener una debilidad de otro arma de jefe que puede hacerlos más fáciles o incluso trivializarlos?
Pues bien, algo en lo que sin querer acabé metido fue en intentar derrotar a todos los jefes buster sólo después de conseguir una notificación cheevo de derrotar a Chill Penguin sólo con el buster.
...Lo cual es normal cuando estás empezando el juego y no tienes ningún arma a mano.
Pero el hecho de que hubiera logros para ellos me lanzó al instante la bola curva de apuntar a ellos a la vez, no sólo sabiendo que algunos jefes son REALMENTE fáciles de engañar [Spark Mandrill recibe Shotgun Ice repetidamente durante un minuto y muere], sino también... los logros estaban justo ahí. Sólo tenía que morder la bala y empujar para ellos, que también sería único cuando la última vez que jugué esto, yo usé las debilidades en las primeras peleas sin piedad.
Así que en mi orden de juego...
- Chill Penguin fue... el primero. Así que era obligatorio matarlo solo con el Buster, aunque suele jugarse primero más allá de su dificultad fácil porque su etapa tiene el Dash Upgrade en el medio de ella- como en este juego se necesita la actualización sólo para dash a diferencia de las secuelas.

Usé un subtanque para evitar rehacer el combate de mi primera visita porque no quería volver a intentarlo, ya que no había encontrado una forma consistente de escapar/destruir los pequeños pero rápidos misiles que dispara, así que en vez de eso hice más daño [con la mejora de cuerpo y también de salud] después de curarme con el subtanque.
La mayoría de los potenciadores eran fáciles de encontrar ya que aún tenía memoria de la última vez que jugué y sabía dónde podía conseguirlos, como los corazones en la fase de Kuwanger y Mandrill. Hubo exactamente una mejora que tuve que dar unas cuantas vueltas en varias fases adivinando dónde estaba hasta que recordé una fase tonta con una posible zona.
Y para bien o para mal, aquí es donde realmente puedo hablar de la etapa de Armored Armadillo por más de unas cuantas razones.
La Odisea del Armadillo
Conseguir la mejora de salud aquí fue fácil, ya que conocía los pasos: Destruye la cosa trituradora de la primera sección lo suficientemente rápido como para poder cogerla arriba, ya que está a la vista pero es inaccesible si no destruyes esa trituradora antes.
Sin embargo, la mejora del subtanque estaba escondida en un lugar descarado que sólo intenté comprobar tras varios minutos de deambular por las fases del Camaleón Picador y el Pulpo Lanzador.

El Sub Tanque está justo en el lugar donde aparece. Sólo tienes que esperar a que salga, y luego colarte allí para recogerlo.
Pero las dos cosas que más tiempo me quitaron de su escenario acabaron siendo los dos grandes puntos fuertes que tiene a su nombre. El primero es... el jefe.
Armored Armadillo es una anomalía interesante en el sentido de que, a diferencia de otros jefes, realmente hace uso de su armadura al bloquear la mayoría de los disparos cargados que intentas asestar. Y como recordarás, yo estaba decidido a derrotar a los ocho jefes sin nada más que el buster... así que puedes suponer que me llevó bastante tiempo averiguar cómo derrotarlo.
La primera estrategia que puedes averiguar, además de apuntar con disparos cargados cuando aterriza tras su ataque rodante, es... provocar su ataque de guardia. Puede bloquear balas normales y no hacer nada especial, pero cargará un ataque de ocho direcciones propio si intentas un disparo cargado.
Pero lo que acabé haciendo más tarde fue intentar disparar un pequeño tiro cargado [verde] para desencadenar ese ataque, y luego empezar a cargar inmediatamente... y esperar no sólo conseguir el tiro cargado completo a tiempo, sino también que tan pronto como salte sobre el ataque, pueda aterrizar el tiro rápidamente antes de que él pueda bloquearlo de nuevo.
Y la gran razón por la que quería ir a por los disparos con carga completa es porque hacen un poco más de daño que los disparos con carga normal y verde... que sólo hacen una barra de daño a los jefes. Así que puedes adivinar cuantos intentos fallidos terminaron por tratar de hacer con pequeños disparos cargados pero teniendo muy poco progreso por la cantidad de tiempo que estaba siendo golpeado entre el ataque cargado y el ataque rodante.
Creo que morí ante él como cinco o seis veces en total.
Al final, decidí acabar con él de una vez por todas, y gasté uno de mis sub-tanques [que no se van para siempre, sólo que tienes que volver a llenarlos por tu cuenta] en el último intento en el que lo tenía con la mitad de salud pero estaba a punto de morir. Ya había perdido demasiado tiempo en este idiota debido al desafío del buster, no iba a perder más si tenía una forma de darme una segunda oportunidad.
La otra gran cosa de esta fase es una que... en realidad intenté conseguir después de obtener todas las mejoras de salud y subtanques, pero no me di cuenta hasta varios intentos de hacer los pasos de que me faltaba una mejora de armadura.
Sí, ya había conseguido las mejoras de casco, cuerpo y tablero... pero no busqué ni encontré por casualidad la mejora Buster. No pensé en ello, ya que iba a confiar en que un evento determinado te otorgaría otra mejora para el buster... pero fue un error del que me di cuenta después de intentar conseguir la técnica secreta, porque también necesitas las cuatro mejoras de armadura.
Así que fui a las fases Sigma de una vez por todas.
Hora de una pequeña venganza
Las fases en sí, aunque tienen algo de plataformeo (sobre todo la primera, con las plataformas flotantes sobre el pozo sin fondo y los enemigos voladores), son más un vehículo para una forma diferente de enfrentarse a un jefe: Te enfrentas a un jefe en la primera fase, a dos en la segunda y a los CINCO restantes en la tercera...
Pero como no hay logros por superar los combates de revancha solo buster, finalmente iba a matar a estos jefes con sus debilidades.
Vile vuelve después de la Intro Stage en la que simplemente te obliga a perder ante su armadura para que Zero venga a salvarte... y vuelve a hacer exactamente lo mismo: No puedes vencer la armadura que tiene, pero Zero se sacrifica con una explosión para destruirla, y aunque ya estabas dañado, su heroico intento de salvarte te da un segundo aire [restaura toda tu salud] para patearle el culo como es debido.
Al principio tuve problemas con el buster, hasta que descubrí sobre la marcha que el torpedo teledirigido era su punto débil. Y a diferencia de los ocho primeros jefes, el resto no tienen logros solo para el buster.
Vale, excepto uno, pero es mucho más enrevesado de lo que me gustaría contar ahora mismo.
Así que... adiós Vile, pedazo de basura sin valor, no vuelvas más.
Y con eso, vemos a nuestro heroico mentor Zero sucumbir a sus heridas, no sin antes darnos una cosa que nos ayudará en nuestra misión final.
Al final de la primera fase Sigma, te espera Bospider. Sólo... simplemente usa el arma de hielo con esa cosa cada vez que baje y ahórrate el tiempo.

Y aparentemente hacerlo varias veces - no está exactamente claro pero parece que necesitas hacerlo varias veces para que aparezca una vez tengas todas las mejoras.

Así que pasamos a la fase 2 de Sigma, dos jefes más a los que abofetear con sus debilidades, y llega la hora de Rangda Bangda.
...Rangda Bangda.... ¿Qué clase de nombre es ese? ¿Por qué es un muro con pinchos en el centro? Sigma podría haber ganado fácilmente si todo hubiera sido picos... en realidad no importa, lo bueno es que Sigma NO hizo eso.
Morí una vez contra esta cosa - tienes que disparar a los ojos que se abren, que pueden volverse verdes por disparar un solo orbe, rojos por disparar múltiples orbes, y azules por embestirte. Y a veces las paredes se cerrarán sobre ti, teniendo que saltarlas para evitar los pinchos y atacar a la cosa de la nariz, que empezará a moverse para intentar golpearte también.
